Can’t think of something a little more modern? IN THE DAYS OF LONG AGO From the Files of Anaheim Gazette By MRS. HENRY KUCHEL 25 Years Ago Miss Hazel Fox of this city and Harold H. Grimes of Santa Ana were married Saturday evening at 5 o'clock at the home of the groom's parents Mr. and Mrs. Richard Grimes 920 S. Ross st., Santa Ana. Rev. Silverton of the First Presbyterian church in Santa Ana performed the ceremony. The bride was given away by her brother Elwyn Fox. Miss Betty Stoffel was the maid of honor. The young couple will make their home in Anaheim. Among those present were Mrs. Anna Fox, Mrs. Viola Fox, Miss Dorothy Fox, and Mrs. Schumacher. 50 Years Ago The first installment of the $15,000 donation from Andrew Carnagie for a public library building at Santa Ana was received some days ago in the shape of a $3000 check. The balance will follow as work on the building progresses. The building is well under way and according to the contract with the builders will be finished before the new year. 75 Years Ago The Swampers have set their cannons against Chinese labor by sending word to Mr. J. H. Raine that no chinaman will be allowed in his hop-field this season. Mr. Chambers who was injured by a fall from a wagon on Saturday was so far recovered yesterday as to be taken home. Prov. 17:22. PROFILE — Louis Hoskins, Anaheim's genial postmaster, is an armchair traveler. When a speaker at one of the Postal Ass'n getogethers failed to show, Louis was asked: "Would you fill in?" It was a short notice, but the Anaheim postmaster got up and asked: "Have any of you ever been to Argentina?" No one had; so he continued: "Well, neither have I, but I'll tell you about the Argentine." And with that brief introduction, the postmaster gave one of the most interesting talks on the land of the gaucho, pampas and Dictator Juan Peron. Hoskins has read every word on Argentina that the Anaheim library has. He's read every magazine article on the South American country that he's been able to obtain. Those who have been fortunate enough to hear his talks will tell you that they've never heard anything like it. The Postmaster has a vast fund of knowledge and can explain the various aspects of the Latin American culture, economics, modes and customs. He may not have been closer to Argentina than the books he has read and the pictures he's seen, but without a doubt, he's one of the Southland's foremost authorities on the fabulous land, which, in many respects, is similar to the United States. LINES-O-TYPE — Bob Falk is an Anaheimer who knows his test tubes. Like Ed Hinze he's careful when he has one of those Bunsen burners going. Eddie learned a those keys at lightning speed pays well. George Geselle is happier now than he was when he was an ice man. "The ice business ain't so hot," he said after napl is another of those Anaheimers who has a difficult name to spell. Johnny Vukovnovich was one of the few Anaheimers who believed that Clare Van Hoorebeke's Colonists could do it this year. The experts strung along with Huntington Beach but the Big Boswell twins—Bill and Bob—just couldn't turn the trick for Ed Goddard. They tell me that Paul Demaree didn't think in September that the Colonist eleven would be where it is in November. The able Anaheim administrator knows that it took hard work to get the 1952 Colonists up to the head of the Sunset League. MEN WORKING — Elmer Williams, the Motor Doc, operating on a car. Elmer has never lost a "patient" in all the years that he has been working 'em over. Incidentally, he's one of the fellows who helped build the Metropolitan aqueduct system. Albertus Collman is one of those strong silent men. But the Anaheim rancher is a man of action. After all, action speaks louder than words. Tom Collins is a used car salesman—but with his name you wouldn't believe it. Wouldcha? Kenny Foster is figuring how to get back at his buddies for planting those campaign stickers on his car. Hubert Portwood is one fellow who does all right with the figures. It's his business. Richard Jewett who has done a lot of building around the north end of the county is in Japan on business. Fred Wiseman has a full-time job keeping the Anaheim T & T fleet rolling on schedule. John Steele's work consists of watching gauges, turning valves and turning crude into hi octane. NITECAPSULE — The fellow who waits for a base on balls seldom gets a hit.
