Colonists Travel to Orange Huskies Point For Upset Win Over Trojans BOS. ANGELES 09—Southern California's football machine, which has gained momentum as the season progressed, is a strong 15-point favorite to roll on over Washington tomorrow in the top game in the Pacific coast conference. A victory for the unbeaten Trojans will set the stage for a truly great game next week against the other undefeated team in the coast Rose bowl, Jace-UCLA. A Washington triumph would give the Huskies a chance to tie the title chase, in the event they go on to whip Washington State Nov. 29 and SC trims UCLA. And a win over SC would be a fine going away present for pass artist Don Heinrich, who is army bound. The odds say the Huskies can't do it. The tremendous Trojan defense, featuring such belligerent gentlemen as Elmer Willhoit, Bob Dan Doren and Bob Hooks, looks strong enough to belt the foe's offense into submission. And last week the oft-criticized Trojan offense came to life with disastrous results for Stanford. The Trojans scored 54 points. There is no under-estimating Washington's chances around Troville. They were beaten badly in their one conference setback by UCLA, and took another drubbing the next week from Illinois. Then Howie Odell's lads disposed of their next four opponents, including upsets over a still capable Stanford and last Anaheim's Colonists journey to Orange tonight for a termine just where the Sunset league crown will go, while Ana for another contest that will help decide the final an Orange team that has become harder to defeat as the thers got accustomed to the single wing for mation, while heim must win this game to stay in continion for the County Casaba Teams Play at Long Beach Ballman's TV ers, county league basketball team, will play Long Beach State college at the Long Beach Armory tonight at 8 o'clock. This will be the season opener for the Long Beach quintet, and baby will be out to start off their season right. Plenty of Long Beach fans are expected to attend the inauguration of the new casaba season. Opening for the locals will be Hugh Faulkner, 67", at center, and "Jumping Joe" Bruce and Dick Berg at forward. Roger Panier and Bill Walker will work at the guard posts. Backing up the starting five will be Don Liebhart, Marshall Still and Wendy Range, all of whom are scheduled to see plenty of action. Franklin Turns Tables on Mann Gridders 13-0 The Franklin Bees turned the tables on Horace Mann yesterday in a recreation league football game played at City park, storming over the usually unbeatable Mann's 13-0. Just a few miles away the Belleton Indians must lose to Santa Ana Salts, if they want help the Colonists retain their title. Needless to say, all four teams have been working hard to assure themselves of a victory, for each has something to gain thereby win by Anaheim, and a loss Fullerton, would leave the titles for locals. A win by Fullerton would send the title to them. A victory over Anaheim would give Orange a second place standing in the league and a Santa Ana win would help the faltered Saints to better their season record. The Colonists will have a job of work cut out for themselves when they tangle with the Panthers. Orange, which dropped its first two league contests, has been getting up a reel head of steam as the single wing they are affecting the year has become more familiar. In their last two league outings the Panthers have beaten San Anah 7-0 and Huntington Bees 13-7. They are now consider the most improved team in league. And the fact that they have chance to end up in the number two spot in the league will impetus to their attack tonight. Also, if you can't be a winner, it often nice to be a spoiler, and Orange could really spoil things in Anaheim tonight. The Colonists have been working on single wing defensive plays this week and have been trying to strengthen their offense. Monday they went through There is no underestimating Washington's chances around Troyville. They were beaten badly in their one conference setback by UCLA, and took another drubbing the next week from Illinois. Then Howie Odell's lads disposed of their next four opponents, including upsets over a still capable Stanford and last week over California's once mighty Golden Bear. The big man for Washington is Heinrich who got his notice yesterday to report to the Bremeron draft board for possible induction Nov. 21. Emil R. Fischer, president of the Packers, said Stydahar, who arrived Thursday night, replaces Jack Vainisi, head scout, who is ill. Franklin Turns Tables on Mann Gridders 13-0 The Franklin Bees turned the tables on Horace Mann yesterday in a recreation league football game played at City park, storming over the usually unbeatable Mann's 13-0. Play in the first quarter was fairly even, but in the second stanza Franklin began to march. The Franklin's moved play by play to the Mann 25 yard line, where Mike Rice took over, scoring for his team on a flashy run around Right end. A pass over center to Martin was the play used to make the extra point, and Franklin led 7-0. A series of interceptions were features of early second half play, as both teams again battled on fairly even terms. Mann finally managed to hang onto the ball long enough to move to the Franklin five yard line, but there they lost the ball. Franklin failed to move the ball on the first three plays. Then with time for final one play before the final gun, Mike Rice took the ball in his own end zone, outmaneuvered the entire Mann team and raced the length of the field for the final TD. The conversion attempt failed and the final score read, Franklin 13, Mann 0. Some of the outsanding players in the game were Jimmy Redline, Dick Weithorn, Gale Collins and Johnny Keith, but the whole Franklin team played an outstanding game. LINCOLN, R.L. (P) — Jockey Tony Despirito brought home four winners at Lincoln Downs yesterday to boost his wins to 346 in his drive to break the all-time record of 388 in a year. The young apprentice is about 20 ahead of the pace set in 1950 by Willie Shoemaker and Joe Culmune when they tied the record set by Walter Miller in 1906. GREENSBORO, N.C. (P)—Last Saturday Lenoir Rhye defeated Guilford 76-0. But was Guilford down-hearted? "Even though we lost," commented Guilford Coach Stuart Maynard, "we played a good game defensively." Coffman 328, Hdcp 819—Tot Sports Roundup By GAYLE TALBOT BY GAYLE TALBOT NEW YORK U.S.-Our position, simply stated, is that baseball umpires should have just as much right to pop off in public as the players and managers, and if you think this is going to be a defense of Larry Goetz for his needling remark the other day that the Yankees are "cry babies," that's correct. This is not a new thought on our part. For many a season we have strained against the unwritten rule that the men in blue are not to be quoted. Some of the most wonderful stories and many of the most pungent observations we have ever heard came from umpires in their offduty hours, and yet very few of them have been passed on to the public because the umpires took it for granted that they would not be. It has been a distinct loss to sports literature, and this is a personal plea to President Warren Giles of the National League not to nag at Goetz for having stuck a pin into the sensitive world champions. It was fun to watch the dowager duchess jump and roll foul. The worst Commissioner Ford Frick had to say about the incident was that Larry's remarks were "unfortunate," and he didn't look very severe when he said it. The Yankees, one may have noticed, but no time in coming back hard at the National League arbiter. They worked him over good, and there was even the implied threat that he might not be welcome to help officialize another World Series in which the Bombers are participants. Whether this sporting is perhaps to open argument, but it doesn't matter for the reason that Goetz will work the play-off won't come around again for some six years, and by that time he'll likely have retired. The point is that players, managers and even club presidents never hesitate to say what they think of umpires. Why in the name of Abner Doubleday does it become uncricket when an umpire steps up and takes a couple of licks? As it happens, Goetz is a fellow who loves baseball much more than most men connected with the game. He lives it the year around. Such a man, we contend, should be given a special license to talk, even about the Yankees. As a matter of fact, some of us knew during the series that Larry and the Yanks were not going steady. Larry said as much Big John Mize, the former National Leaguer, was particularly burned because, the first time he questioned a called strike, Goetz had commented "I see you haven't changed a bit." Yogi Berra and Larry were not buddies because Larry objected to Yogi's helping him call balls and strikes. "If you don't stop that guy quick, you'll find he's umpiring for you," Larry observed. Four new areas have been provided for the season which opens Nov. 22, bringing to 15 the total number of pheasant co-ops and raising to 10,757 the number of hunters who can be accommodated at one time, an increase of 1809. One of the new co-ops, known as the Yolo area, lies in the Yolo By-pass between Sacramento and Davis and is crossed by the Highway 40 Yolo Causeway. The area, which will handle 414 hunters at a time, has been loaded with pheasants in seasons past. The Fish and Game Department has been trying to line it up for several years, but only this season were they able to reach an agreement with the landowners. The other new areas are Tyler and Union Islands in the Delta area and at McArthur in eastern Shasta county. Under the new pheasant planting policy, all birds will be released before the season opens, with exception of a few which will be held for mid season planting on the McArthur, Los Banos and Firebaugh areas. The last Philadelphia to be honored was Jimmy Foxx in 1933. WITH U.S. THIRD DIVISION, KOREA (U)—A Chinese mortar shell recently hit Cpl. James D. Perry, Dayton, O., squarely on the head. Result: A hole in his helmet, a scraped nose, and a headache. The shell, which failed to explode, ripped his helmet, slid down his face, and buried itself in the ground two feet in front of Perry. The last birds on those areas will be planted before Thanksgiving. It is doubly important that pheasant hunters return to the Fish and Game Department this year the leg bands from pheasants they shoot. Band returns provide the basis for a host of data on pheasants and with the change in the planting program this year a good band return is doubly important. Here are the cooperative areas for this season, with acreage open to hunting, number of hunters and location: Staten Island: 8090 acres, 540 hunters; 1 mile south and east of Walnut Grove.
