Golden Trout to Get More Care By The Associated Press SAN FRANCISCO — The golden trout—unique and colorful native Californian—will be managed in the future by the department of fish and game under a new eight point policy adopted by the fish and game commission at its October meeting. Recommended by the department and the organized sportsmen of California, the management plan is the result of two years of joint study. It is designed to protect the gaudy relative of the rainbow trout and its High Sierra habitat. The policy defines the high mountainous areas of Madera, Fresno and Tulare counties as golden trout country, portions of which will be reserved exclusively for goldens. A "reasonable number" of suitable barren lakes will be held in their present unpopulated condition for the stocking of goldens in the near future, and a golden trout egg-taking station will be set up to provide brood stock. Other highlights of the policy include plans for extension of the present range of the fish, an intensive, long range study and immediate curtailment of planting of fish of other species in golden trout waters.
