Post-Election California Shuffle Sees Kuchel on Top, Regardles
SACRAMENTO (CNS) — The sweeping Republican victory in the national elections will have more repercussions in the state of California than in almost any other state in the union.
For Governor Earl Warren will have at least one, and possibly two highly important appointments to make as the result of the election of General Eisenhower.
The number one appointment will be a successor to U.S. Senator Richard Nixon, elected vice-president, and the speculation is running rife as to who will get this fat plum from the governor's office.
The thinking in the state capitol, without any assists from Warren, is that Thomas H. Kuchel, state controller, can have the job if he wants it. Kuchel, young politician from Orange county, first an assemblyman, second a state senator, and third, an appointee of the governor to the office of state controller generally is considered the fair-haired boy to get the appointment.
For Kuchel has been elected controller on his own hook, is a veteran of state-wide campaigning, and not only that, has been a confident of the governor for some time. His education and background qualify him well to become a United States Senator, not only as an appointee, but also as a campaigner who could, if appointed, ruh for the office on his own and become an elected senator.
On the other hand, if Warren is looking for a successor, there is no better qualified man in his own camp than Kuchel. So it might be that the chief executive make another appointment Kuchel stay in his predecessor and if Warren hires retiree or possibly takes job, thus having Kuchel chances on the government.
Mentioned also an successor to Nixon Waters; assemblyman Angeles. Waters is also seen Knight number one threat toernorship, and cam hair at the last elect lenging Warren's toe-office.The lieutenant it is conceded.wou good senator;if he chl Washington in the era was offered to him.
Warren through an pointment, could elm pentition, and virtually next governorship for the other hand, the governor do not be would appoint enemies to high office.
Three offices building, costing 1,987; six store buildings costing 1,400 and three school buildings, presenting $79,800, were listed along the month's permits. Building permits for the past week in the rural areas amounted to $31,600 in the Anaheim district, which ranked third in the county at the period, as permits totaled 13,723.
Permit totals by communities are: Costa Mesa $74,405, Garden Grove $52,712, Anaheim $31,600, Oguna Beach $20,250, Santa Ana $700, Tustin $16,565, Placentia $750, Brea $12,350, Westminster $245, La Habra $11,200, San Antonio Capistrano $10,448, Alamos $8500, Los Alamitos $5400, Ana Park $3218, Yorba Linda $78, Stanton $2850, Orange $50, Midway City $100, mislaneous $800.
Anaheim area permits were as follows: Mr. and Mrs. Verl Underwood, residence, 11732 Haster st., 900; Mrs. Claude Smith, residence, 9152 Orange ave., $8000; Thomas Shoen, residence, 9922 Orte ave., $9000; F. Andorko, residence, 11001 Magnolia, $4800.
Funeral services will be conducted from the Hilgenfeld chapel Wednesday at 2 p.m. Rev. Philip R. Selfridge, pastor of the Evangelical United Brethren church, will officiate and burial will be made in the family plot in Anaheim cemetery.

that the chief executive would make another appointment, and let Kuchel stay in his present job until and if Warren himself decides to retire, or possibly take a federal job, thus having Kuchel take his chances on the governorship.
Mentioned also as a possible successor to Nixon is Laughlin Waters, assemblyman from Los Angeles. Waters is, however, a neophyte on state-wide campaigns as far as his own candidacy is concerned, having experienced no battles except in his own assembly district. The general consensus is that Waters needs more build-up before he can qualify for the big U.S. Senator job.
A possible effort to secure the U.S. Senate post for Lieutenant Governor Goodwin J. Knight was also seen. Knight is Warren's number one threat to the governorship, and came within a hair at the last election of challenging Warren's toe-hold on the office. The lieutenant governor, it is conceded, would make a good senator, if he chose to go to Washington in the event the job was offered to him.
Warren, through a Knight appointment, could eliminate competition, and virtually set up the next governorship for Kuchel. On the other hand, those who know the governor do not believe that he would appoint his political enemies to high office merely to
free himself of a challenge.
And of course, if Kuchel should succeed Nixon, then the governor will have the appointment of a constitutional officer to the job of state controller. This in itself is no small office, and would be a nice political plum from Warren to any of his friends.
As to Warren himself, he has signified no intention of going to Washington, although it generally is believed he may be offered a cabinet post. Personally, the governor is not anxious to go to the national capitol, and probably would not unless urged. Undoubtedly, if he does not get a cabinet post, he will seek a fourth term as governor.
