Hersh; was recently advanced to electrician's major third class while serving aboard the Submarine USS Wahoo. The advancement is a result of competitive examinations conducted this summer on all ships and Naval establishments throughout the world. Since every Navy man has two jobs, the test was divided into military questions covering knowledge of seamanship, gunnery and military law; etc., and the professional part concerning his Naval trade. Mrs. Niehouse, a Republican, won both major party nominations in the primary for her sixth assembly term and had only token opposition yesterday. Warren Will Name New Senator SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Gov. Warren said here today that he will appoint a Southern California Republican to succeed Sen. Richard M. Nixon, the vice president-elect. Warren's announcement immediately focused attention on State Controller Thomas H. Kuchel and Assemblyman Laughlin Waters. Kuchel, a resident of Anaheim, Orange county, has been state controller since his appointment by Warren in 1947. Kuchel is 44 and a Navy veteran. Waters of Los Angeles is the State chairman of the GOP. He is a staunch Warren man. Warren added, however, he had not determined who he will name to succeed Nixon. "I have not even tentatively decided," Warren told newsmen in his suite at the St. Francis Hotel. "I think the right thing to do is to appoint a Southern California and a Republican." Santa Ana approved a city charter and a three year tax levy of $300,000 for a new swimming pool. San Clemente voted a $150,000 water bond issue and rejected to sell the San Clemente Beach club and acquire beach frontage. Among three races for judge in the county, two appeared definitely decided but the Santa Ana-Orange municipal court judgeship must await the count of more than 1200 absentee ballots Nov. 21 so close were City Judge R. M. Crookshank and Justice Howard Cameron both of Santa Ana in the unofficial count. That count gave Crookshank a lead of only 57 votes, 15.136 to 15.079 with one precinct missing. Judge Donald Dodge held a safe lead over A. K. Phelps in the race for judge of Newport Beach justice court and City Judge Celia Young of Huntington Beach was far ahead of Justice Elmer J. Hughes of Seal Beach in the contest for judge of Huntington Beach-Seal Beach justice court. Californians Fear Radioactivity More than A-Blast A majority of Californians fear the effects of radioactivity far more than blast or heat from an atomic explosion, according to opinions expressed by men and women during this week's (Nov. 3) statewide broadcast of the state office of civil defense. People from various walks of life in 30 California cities took part in the program. To the question "How long do you think America has to get ready to meet a possible enemy attack with atomic bombs?" the average of the replies indicated less than three years. A high percentage showed a basic knowledge in first aid, although the number of homes having at least one person trained in first aid within the last two years fell far short of the goal of civil defense which is at least one trained first-alder in every California home. Those living in valley or inland communities seemed better prepared to survive a three day period with food regularly on the family emergency shelf than did residents of larger coastal cities. Dr. Albert W. Bellamy, chief of radiological services in the state office of civil defense, spoke on radiological problems. Bob VanWagoner Serves with USAF In Philippines CLARK AFB—Maj. Robert N. Van Wagoner, World War II veteran of the European Campaign, son of Mr. J. S. Van Wagnor, 215 E. North st., recently arrived in the Philippines to serve a tour of duty with the U.S. Air Force. Inspector at the Office of the Inspector General, headquarters, 'Peter Pan' Ready for Stage at FJC Tomorrow; Unique Staging Use 'Peter Pan' Ready for Stage at FJC Tomorrow; Unique Staging Us Two years ago, movie star Jean Arthur, portraying the title role in James M. Barrie's famous fantasy, "Peter Pan," proved on Broadway that the old story still has charm, for both oldsters and youngsters. This week, when "Peter" is presented as the annual fall play at Fullerton Junior college, audiences will have the opportunity to experience that charm. The production will be presented in the auditorium for two matinees, Nov. 6 and 7, and one evening performance, Nov. 8. Starring in the title role is Barbara Roberts, dance and drama student at Fullerton. From the moment she, as "Peter," files in the window and matter-of-factly teaches three children to fly, the spectator can drop his everyday role. How "Peter" and the Darling children "fly" has not been revealed by Drama Coach Alex Omalev. The illusion will be good, he promises. Novelty lies in the manner in which "Never-land," the home of "Peter" and the Lost Boys, will be recreated in scenery. Three water-color paintings by Guido Zemgals (Whittier), FJC art major, serve as the major backdrops. They were photographed in kodachrome and reproduced on colored slides which will be projected on the backdrop. The scenes by Zemgals depict the quarterdeck of the villainous "Captain Hook's" pirate ship, "Mermaid's Lagoon," and the home of the "Lost Boys," who arrived in Never-land when they fell out of their baby cribs. Other students cast in the play include Florence Rowland (Fullerton) as "Mrs. Darling"; Joyce Shunk (Anaheim) as "Wendy," oldest of the children; Roland Hiltscher (Anaheim) as "Capt. Hook" and "Mr. Darling"; Andrea Williams (Orange) as "Liza"; Marshall Hall as "Smee"; Jack Wright (Fullerton) as "Slightly Solled"; and Patty Mennes (Buena Park) as "Tiger Lily."
