When You Buv in Anaheim Anaheim Gazetteer by JOHN S. NEUBAUER The nations are as a drop of a bucket.—Isa. 60:15. LINES-O-TYPE—Forrest (Buster) Callan has become an Anaheimer. He's got his Orangethorpe orange grove up for sale along with Norman Lombard. Seems like Buster couldn't watch 'em yank out the orange trees and build houses as they did on the Rufus Porter place across the street. Y know, the ironical thing about it is that Orangethorpe should have had the building spurt 75 years ago and it would have been a town... Incidentally, didcha know that Marg Ann Callan is now the woman's page editor of the Ellay Times. She's the youngest (28-years-old) metropolitan woman's editor in the land. That's a unique distinction for the little gal who used to pound out copy for Ted Kuchel when the Gazette was a weekly... Gus Leander could tell you that the Northrop plant next door to his place has done a lot for Anaheim. He expects big things of the old home town... Hal (Skeets) Gregg forgot his golf clubs long enough to bag a duck or two. Mickey Gregg does all right even with his pet cocker spaniel enjoying the hunt... Wendell Pickens hasn't forgotten how he helped ice box cars in Anaheim while working his way through school. The Orange Coast college athletic mentor has a warm spot in his heart for Anaheim and Anaheimers. PREDICTION—You can bet that there will be some Anaheimers out PREDICTION—You can bet that there will be some Anaheimers out scraping off the election stickers they so fondly placed on their cars not so long ago. Everyone wants to be identified with a winner, so you can be sure that those who gussed right will sport their election stickers for weeks. VIGNETTE—Little Lenny Kolb has been playing a lot of football for Ray Russo's Orange Coasters. The little fellow is a brilliant football strategist and if he'd pack more weight he'd be an all-American. Well, Kolb has football savvy. He knows the game as few other two-year collegiate field generals do. This was demonstrated when the ball-handling wizard cooked up a play for his own and baffled everyone as faked to his blockers and took off to paydirt. It all happened on the spur of the moment that not even his teammates knew what he was doing, but he did it and it paid off on the scoreboard. John Steinborn, another Anaheimer, is making football history for Orange Coast. He is a triple threat man—passes, punts and carries the leather. Eddie Herrera doesn't get the thunder he should—but then, y'know linemen seldom get the press notices they should. Herrera, rates high with his teammates, though. They know he does his job well. SPORTOPIX—Johnny Vuksanovich has been following Fullerton and Anahi football teams. "Fullerton has more team," he'll tell you. "But don't be surprised if Anaheim surprises 'em. Van (Clare Van Hoorebeke) has done wonders with this year's squad." PERSONALITIES—Charles Haliday is another one of those Anaheimers who's glad to get out from behind the brush. Joe Martin didn't go in for raising a brush this year. Wasn't it last year that he developed a real House of David Smith Bros. trademark and was called to Kansas at Festival time? Charles Tuma needed one of Northrop's optical winners at NAVY CARNIVAL—Ernest W. Cupp, Long Beach, 26, was the lucky winner of a brand new Pontiac Catalina at the drawing at the Naval Air Station Los Alamitos Fall Welfare Carnival. The Carnival ran from Oct. 31 thru Nov. 2. Cupp is single and did not own a car. Shown in the picture is Captain E. J. Drew, USN, commanding officer of the Air Station, presenting the keys of the car. Looking on is lovely Miss Virginia Otte of Los Alamitos, a senior at Anaheim high school. She was selected to draw the winning ticket. City-County Fight Develops over Municipal Courts' Operating Cost SACRAMENTO (CNS) — Preliminary shots in a battle between cities and counties at the 1953 legislature over the reorganization of the state's inferior courts were fired here before a legislative sub-committee hearing evidence which revealed counties are footing the bill while the cities are securing the major share of the revenue from the courts. A parade of witnesses told Assemblymen Donald Grunsky and Stanley Tomlinson of Santa Cruz and Santa Barbara, respectively that there are large operating deficits on county treasuries, while the cities are waxing fat off the fines. Under the reorganization program, all costs are paid by the counties, which receive income only from arrests by county officers, and a 25 per cent cut of city arrests, except those cited for vehicle code violations. One county representative said many cities are citing more and more traffic violators under the vehicle code, rather than under local ordinances, to retain more money for themselves. Grunsky said at one point that the court consolidations have resulted in greatly increased operating costs, a development not anticipated by the legislature when it reorganized the courts. All increased costs are borne by the counties, he said. It was pointed out the situation is likely to get worse as counties are forced to build and furnish new court quarters, as many cities which provided free courtrooms have told the counties to pay rent or "get kicked out." 37,000 Apply for Absentee Ballots SACRAMENTO (CNS) — More than 37,000 applications for absentee ballots for the general election were received from California servicemen and women, Secretary of State Frank M. Jordan announced. Jordan said the applications were forwarded to the various county clerks and registrars of voters by special delivery air mail to insure enough time for forwarding of ballots. LEGAL NOTICES (Pub. Anaheim Gazette Oct. 14, 21 28 Nov. A. 11:552) PERSONALITIES — Charles Haliday is another one of those Anaheimers who’s glad to get out from behind the brush ... Joe Martin didn’t go in for raising a brush this year. Wasn’t it last year that he developed a real House of David Smith Bros. trademark and was called to Kansas at Festival time? ... Charles Tuma needed one of Northrop’s optical elusions to see if the guy who was looking at him in the mirror was really himself ... And a few fellows we know really hated to take back to the razor after a month’s layoff ... Martin Echeto, the Yorba Linda handballer, is happy that the Whittier 20-30 club followed the horses instead of the group he is affiliated with, Martin was on the business end of a push-broom in a Hallowe’en parade: “It’s a lot of fun; but, gosh, it’s work to run around the way we did” ... Jack Weldmeier would rather blow his horn at a football game than march in a parade. Guess Herb Salveson would too ... Weldmeier’s boy, Jack Junior, showed his father that there was money in politics the other afternoon by just tooting his tooter ... Bill Wallop is the Anaheimer who makes all parades. He’s looking forward to good weather for the annual tournament ofoses parade ... A fellow who really enjoys such civic events is Warren Ashleigh. He’s done a lot for Anaheim since he’s given up umpiring. NITECCAPSULE—There’ll be a lot of happy politicians tomorrow. And almost as many unhappy ones. License Issued SACRAMENTO (CNS) — An insurance agent’s license has been issued to Anton H. Vanderboom, 8341 E. Euclid ave., Anaheim, the state insurance commissioner announced today. Hoskins Shows Scientific Gear CLAREMONT. — Among the Pomona college students who acted as demonstrators of equipment and materials for the sixth annual science day program here last Saturday was Cortez W. Hoskins, son of Mr. and Mrs. Cortez Hoskins, 320 W. Alberta, Anaheim. Hoskins, a geology major at Pomona college, was graduated from Anaheim high school in 1948. More than 300 students in 1948. Moreern California high schools attended the program. Buena Parker In Germany WITH THE FOURTH INFANTRY DIVISION IN GERMANY — Pvt. Lloyd A. Spohn, whose wife, Sue, lives at 7312 E. Ninth st., Buena Park, Calif., recently arrived in Germany and is serving with the Fourth infantry division. Now stationed in the southern part of the country, the Fourth division is receiving intensive field training as part of the North Atlantic treaty organization (NATO) army in Europe. Private Spohn entered the army in March of this year and is serving in Company D of the division’s 12th infantry regiment. He is a former employee of the Standard Oil Co. in La Habra. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert G. Spohn, also live at the 7312 E. Ninth st. address. NEW YORK (P)—The Chicago Cubs may sign a Negro player, Gene Baker, 27-year-old shortstop, property of Los Angeles of the Pacific Coast league, will be given a tryout next spring. If Baker makes good, he will be transferred to the Cub roster. LEGAL NOTICES (Pub. Anaheim Gazette Oct. 14, 21 28 Nov. 4, 11, 1952.) No.A-21960 NOTICE TO CREDITORS ESTATE OF VICTOR J.
