IN THE DAYS OF LONG AGO From the Niles of Anaheim Gazette By MRS. HENRY KUCHEL 75 Years Ago October 1877 The construction of the Backs Bros. new brick building in front of the Gazette offices, is proceeding rapidly. A much respected medical man of our town has introduced a new feature in sea bathing. He wears gumboots to keep the stingares from attacking his feet. His first attempt was not a complete success for the boots filled with water and Anaheim came very near losing one of its most eminent physicians by the undertow. We would suggest to the bathers at the Landing that a cast iron suit would also keep away the stingares. 50 Years Ago October 1992 Mrs. Peter Syse who has been ill for some weeks past, has recovered her health sufficiently to be about again. C. O. Rust and family have returned from a fortnight's outing at Terminal Island. Our good people who are accustomed to eat fish on Fridays were disappointed at the non-appearance of the fisherman from the Landing. His boat was capsized on Thursday evening and its contents lost. He promises, however, to make his appearance on Friday next. D.V. 25 Years Ago October 1927 Floyd G. West of the firm of West Brothers and family have just returned from a 10 days vacation. The party spent several days at Yosemite National park. Other interesting points were visited en route making the trip enjoyable and interesting. Lolyd Rieutcel, son of A. C. Rieutcel local furniture dealer is about recovered from an injury to his heel, sustained while working at a local fruit association. Miss Katherine Steward has returned home after a week spent at Forest Home as the guest of Mrs. G. W. Knox of Santa Ana. THE WANT AD NUMBER 2206 ANAHEIM—Although Anaheim came into being in 1859 after several years of planning, California history began with Hernando de Alacron first setting foot on what is now California soil on May 26, 1540. Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, however, is credited with the discovery of the Golden State. The interpid Portuguese navigator in service of the King of Spain first went ashore at San Diego, Oct. 7, 1542. They were greeted by hostile Indians who killed three of the white men in a brief skirmish. BACKGROUND—It was not until July 1769 that the first chapter of Orange county history was written when Fr. Juan Crespi noted the events of the Don Gaspar de Portola expedition as it traveled north to seek Monterey. Lt. Pedro Pages, Engineer Miguel Costanso, 27 soldiers of which Bernardo Yorba was one, muleteers and several Christian Indians made up the non-descript group. It is not definitely known whether this small group actually passed through what is now Anaheim, but from the description of the terrain by Fr. Crespi, the party actually camped near the present site of Olive. Here the expedition experienced its first California earthquake. The shake was rather severe, knocking the mounted members of the party off their horses. Students of history believe that Portola's group did not cut across the level land, but stayed close to the foothills as they worked their way northward. Some believe that the party may actually have camped at the site of the Fullerton dam. COLOR—Although the Portola expedition did not have a material effect on present-day Anaheim, it is part of the colorful past that forms part of the Mother Colony's heritage. DEVELOPMENT — The actual development of the state can be traced directly to the Portola expedition, however, as part of its purpose was to select sites for the missions which did so much to transform the wilderness the Spaniards found. Just after Portola left for Monterey, Fr. Junipero Serra founded the mission of San Diego de Alcala, at Old Town, San Diego. This was the first of 21 missions in the Northern California chain. BAPTISM—The first Indian to route making the trip enjoyable and interesting. National Forest Funds Received By Orange County SACRAMENTO (CNS) — California counties with forest reserves are $3,292,123.10 richer through the distribution of that amount which is 25 per cent of the 1951-52 fiscal year receipts from national forests, it was announced here today by State Controller Thomas H. Kuchel. This represents, Kuchel said, an increase of $963,193, or 41.36 per cent more than was apportioned to California counties last year. County treasurers are required to deposit half the sums received in the county school fund, and the other half in the county road fund. In Orange county, the amount received was $656.51. At the same time, Kuchel announced distribution of $36,727.26 from the federal government as the state's share of the federal grazing fees distributable to counties. This money is earmarked for range improvements within the county and for control of predatory animals, according to provisions of the Taylor grazing act. Grazing money allocated to Orange county amounted to $2.78 for the fiscal year, Kuchel said. Just after Portola left for Monterey, Fr. Junipero Serra founded the mission of San Diego de Alcala, at Old Town, San Diego. This was the first of 21 missions in the Northern California chain. BAPTISM—The first Indian to be baptized in California were dying children of the Diequeno tribe at a place called Los Cristianos near the present Orange county community of San Clemente. Fr. Crespi performed the rite and the children were given the names of "Maria Magdalena" and "Margarita." MISSIONS — The Mission San Juan Capistrano actually brought civilization to Orange county. It was established in 1776. The mission padres taught the Indians various useful occupations and trades, besides converting them to Christianity. In addition, they established the fact that what is now Orange county was extremely fertile land, rich and productive. It was indeed a firm foundation upon which the German pioneers built their city of Anaheim years later. QUARTER-NORSE RACING! Oct. 29-Nov.15 8 races daily. Post time 1 P.M.
