Century of Life To be Celebrated By Studebaker
How the discovery of gold in California helped in development of one of America's great businesses was told here today by Leavitt Ford, local Studebaker dealer, and representative of the only automobile company that is twice as old as the motor car itself.
Coincident with the week-long celebration of the 29th annual Hallowa'en pageant and parade in Anaheim, Ford 226 S. Los Angeles st., for the past six years, is inviting the public to help celebrate the anniversary with him in the agency showroom throughout the week. Souvenirs and balloons will be provided for children accompanied by their parents.
When-gold was discovered in California two young Indiana black-smiths—Henry and Clem Studebaker—saw opportunity in it. They felt that people heading west would need a lot of wagons. So they decided to build some. Another brother, J. M. Studebaker, went west.
In five years, J. M. Studebaker saved $8000 and returned to Indiana to invest it in an expansion of his brother's business in 1858. This addition capital was essential to the early success of the enterprise.
"The saga of Studebaker and California gold is but one instance of business acumen and success that enabled the company to bridge the gap between the horse-drawn vehicle and today's automobile, the only one of more than 5000 such companies to make the transition," said Ford.
As early as 1897 the company then the world's leading manufacturer of glamorous carriages, sturdy wagons and high quality bugles and traps, was experimenting with power propelled vehicles.
