HENRY KUCHEL 75 Years Ago October 1877 On Saturday morning two gentlemen who were coming up from Santa Monica in a buggy found that a huge post had been laid across the railroad track, with the evident intentions of wrecking the Santa Monica train. The obstruction was removed and the railroad officials notified to keep a lookout. The following delegates to the Democratic convention were elected in Santa Ana: Dr. Cummins, Fickas, Walker and Utt. One hundred and fourteen votes were cast. The staking out of lands on the Alamitos and Coyote ranchos is being pursued with vigor. Even the possessions of actual settlers who have bought the land of the company are not respected. Among the arrivals by the train last evening were Mr. Gilbert and family. Mr. Gilbert has leased the lower story of the Grange hall at the depot and in a few days will have it stocked with a large assortment of groceries, dry goods, hardware, etc. Mr. Gilbert was until recently the senior member of the firm of Gilbert and Moore, doing business at Cabazon, and we are told that he is a thorough businessman. George Washington Barter, former proprietor of the Gazette, but at present editor of the Brooklyn Vidette, is a candidate for the legislature from Alameda county, subject to the action of the Republican convention. George used to a Democrat when he lived in a Democratic county, Mr. The members of Company E are receiving congratulations upon the splendid way in which they entertained their friends on Thursday evening. Invitations had been issued to a large number of soldiers and friends of the boys to attend a smoker and a goodly crowd responded. After an exhibition drill by the company Richard Burmester played a few selections on the piano and Judge Langley of Santa Ana delivered a short discourse on war and Captain Spooner spoke upon the Battle of Gettysburg, in which he commanded a battery, and several other old comrades who were present had a few words to say. Altogether it was a most enjoyable occasion with plenty of good cheer, cigars and lemonade. Ed Kraemer started up his new pumping plant the other day and was rejoiced to see a good 50 inch stream being raised from his well. 25 Years Ago October 1927 Ralph McFadden is authority for the statement that the Orange county fair which opens next Monday will be the largest and best in the history of the county. He recently returned from a tour of northern counties and he says we will have the most beautiful ever held on the coast. Miss Myrtle Winters, registrar at the local high school, tells of an interesting trip to Hawaii, when she visited relatives. Miss Winters left the first part of July and was gone nearly two months. George used to a Democrat when he lived in a Democratic county. Mr. Barter founded and was the first editor of the Gazette away back in 1870. Messrs. Look and Leonard have been butchering some very fine cattle lately. We noticed a cow tied in front of their shop last evening that was as fat as any we have ever seen. Deputy Sheriff Dick Barham has moved his residence to the house formerly occupied by Henry Knapke on Center st. Fifty passenger tickets for Los Angeles were sold at the depot yesterday morning. W. Gilbert has rented the home at the depot formerly occupied by Otto Evers. F. Alvarado arrived last evening from lower California. He reports there is considerable trouble on the border. A pigeon shooting match between two of our most celebrated sportsmen will be one of the grand attractions at the landing on Sunday.
