Economist Merryle Rukeyser, to Speak at Fullerton Forum Oct. 23
After two decades of "New Deal-Fair Deal," there will be a pause if not a sharp reversal, in the trend toward socialization and big government.
This view was expressed recently by Merryle Stanley Rukeyser, noted lecturer, broadcaster, economic columnist, and business consultant, who will appear at Fullerton union high school auditorium on Thursday, Oct. 23 at 7:30 p.m. to speak before Fullerton public forum. Subject of his discussion will be "Lifting the Economic Curtain." The public is invited without charge.
Rukeyser, widely known New York financial analyst, is author of "Financial Security in a Changing World" and a former member of the teaching staff of Columbia university. He has received two awards from Freedoms foundation at Valley Forge, Pa., for his contributions to the American way of life. Rukeyser conducts a weekly radio program on popular finance, "Rukeyser Reports" over Mutual Broadcasting System.
"American business and finance have already achieved a significant political victory this year," Rukeyser states. "The coming contest for president between Eisenhower and Stephenson will be between two middle of the road adherents of the private enterprise system."
"Both men are unabashed advocates of the American competitive system. They are both less inclined toward socialism than men to the left of them in their own parties."
Rukeyser points out that Eisenhower and Stevenson, it would appear, have more points of similarity than of difference. Unlike Taft, who has reached dogmatic conclusions on most issues until examining all data. Moreover, unlike Taft, who has represented official long-term opposition, the two standard bearers in the past worked under Franklin D. Roosevelt and President Truman. This, according to Rukeyser, should result in less unwarrished attack on the administration than would have been the case if the candidates had been Taft versus Truman.
The speaker, in discussing young men and women starting out on careers, declares that they should not be frightened by the counsel of perfection. "The essence of success is being well adjusted," Rukeyser states.
"Success is not perfection," he continues. "Too many youngsters are rendered timid by baccalauate addresses which lack canard. Life consists of hits and misses, and the important aim is to maintain a satisfactory batting average. Nobody hits 1000."
Quoting an authority, topflight business executive, Rukeyser states his preference for the courage of youth to the timidity of age.
"Youth is not a chronological matter, but an attitude of mind," he says. "I've known persons past 80 who were young in spirit because they maintained an open mind, and glorified enterprise rather than a neurotic effort to avoid mistakes at all costs."
"Life consists in large measure of trial and error, and it is a sign of premature senility to be afraid to venture in fear of a possible mistake. Prudence is not compounded of fear and timidity, but consists of a realistic appreciation of the risks involved. The prudent do not go off on a limb, but undertake forehandedly to limit their exposure to hazard."

... Let no man deceive you with vain words—Eph. 5:6.
LINES-O-TYPE—They tell me that Jewell Owens' little brother, Alfred, may be the best athlete Anaheim turned out for Fullerton schools. John (Big Red) Atkinson, a kid who has attended Brea, Buena Park and Fullerton schools, says; "Boy! Alfred is good. He's the best all-around athlete I've ever seen." Herb Hamilton, the milk homogenizer and pasteurer, is likely to agree. Wayne Adams, the horticulturist, knows accidents are bad business. He had one. Chester Harroun is another Anaheimer who's had the misfortune of the highway. His wife, Myra, was seriously injured. It's a rather tough break for nice folks. J. Maxwell Burke, the prominent 82-year-old Orange counselor, who was seriously injured when his car crashed with a diesel switch engine, is improving. Bob Muchenthal is a Yankee fan. And whenever the Yanks play a World Series, his work suffers.
NECESSITY — An alternate route around Anaheim is a vital necessity. A main street is not suited for a truck route.

SUMMONS
Action brought in the Superior Court of the County of Orange, and complaint filed in the Office of the Clerk of the Superior Court of said County.
THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA SEND GREETINGS TO: IVAN ADELBERT ROBBINS, Defendant.
You are directed to appear in an action brought against you by the above named plaintiff, in the Superior Court of the State of California, in and for the County of Orange, and to answer the complaint therein within ten days after the service on you of this summons, if served within the County of Orange, or within thirty days if served elsewhere, and you are notified that unless you so appear and answer as above required, the plaintiff will take judgment for any money or damages demanded in the Complaint, as arising upon contract, or will apply to the Court for any other relief demanded in the Complaint.
Given under my hand and seal of the Superior Court of the County of Orange, State of California, this 29 day August 1952 (SEAIL SUPERIOR COURT)
ORANGE COUNTY)
H. J. Smith,
County Clerk and Clerk of the Superior Court of the State of California, in and for the County of Orange.

NOTICE
APPEARANCE: "A defendant appears in an action when he answers demurs, or gives the plaintiff written notice of his appearance, or when an attorney gives notice of appearance for him." (Sec. 1014, CCP)
Answers or demurrals must be in writing, and filed with the Clerk.
IT'S a rather tough break for nice folks... J. Maxwell Burke, the prominent 82-year-old Orange counsellor, who was seriously injured when his car crashed with a diesel switch engine, is improving... Bob Muehenthaler is a Yankee fan. And whenever the Yanks play a World Series, his work suffers.
NECESSITY — An alternate route around Anaheim is a vital necessity. A main street is not suited for a truck route. Traffic is bad enough without the huge, monstrous diesels.
ANECDOTE — Oranco and federal law enforcement agencies are plagued by the continuous stream of "wetbacks" flooding the county from Mexico... The officers are at a loss as to the proper procedure to stop the unlawful entry into the country... Just recently, Ray Juarez, spotted a couple of men crouching under a culvert... "It was foggy. I thought they might be hurt, so I stopped and asked them: 'What'sa trouble?'..." He continued: "They said they didn't have no trouble, but were hiding from the immigration authorities."... Ray found out that these immigrants had made several trips across the border and were familiar with the Southern California terrain. "They asked me where Carmenita was and how far it was to Ellay." When I started the motor of the car, they ran like mad and got lost in the fog. They thought I might turn 'em in.' That's life for you!
SPECIAL — Fire Chief Ed Stringer will tell you that this is Fire Prevention Week. Do yourself a favor by getting rid of all fire hazards around the old home-stead.
NUGGETS—Maj. Gen. Daniel Hudelson, former commanding general of California's 40th—of which Company K (Anaheim's Own) was a part—will speak at the reunion of the Anaheimers. This will be a fitting tribute to the company at its first reunion since being separated from the service following Korea... Charles Watus will slow down the next time he passes through Fullerton. He lead-footed it up Harvard which is North Lemon street... Roland Hiltscher is quite a narrator. That’s quite a gift... Joyce Shunk, an Anaheim thespian, has won the critics’ acclaim... Don Leibhart, Anaheim’s gift to George Pepperdine… college, is hearing wedding bells in the offing... Walter Knott knows his berries, ghost towns and railroads. He’s quite a talker too. But every time we think of Junior, we remember how lucky he is to be alive. A Santa Fe train practically ruined his new Cad at a grade crossing a year or so ago... Bill Wylje is making a name for himself with the Kwikset team.
NITECAPSULE—A lot of folks should be careful not to start something when they're trying to stop something else.
STOCKHOLM. Sweden (P) — Raging waters in the gale-swept Gulf of Bothnia today held at bay rescue ships trying to reach a grounded tanker believed to have 10 men aboard.
The ship's identity was not known but she was believed to be German or Dutch. Rescue personnel described her situation as "serious."
