The government operated railways in an nouncing the death toll said there were eleven other casualties with "more still to come." Commuters standing on the Harrow platform were mowed down as if by a giant scythe when the third train's locomotive left the rails and plowed into two trains already wrecked. The death toll was announced almost eight-hours after the three-way collision. At that time three coaches under the main bulk of the wreckage were still to reach by rescue workers. The crash piled coach on coach in a five-foot heap of wreckage. The collision involved two expresses and a commuter train. Manvv of the victims had been waiting at the station of this Midsex village; ten miles northwest of London. A suburban train standing in the station first was hit from behind by an express bound for London from Scotland. Then as the wreckage of this collision splattered the area, the London - Manchester Express roared up from behind and plowed into the piled-up coaches. It was Britain's worst train wreck in thirty years. A dozen coaches were in a pile of wreckage in the heart of the Harrow station. The crash occurred only three miles from headquarters of the U.S.Eighth air force at South Ruislip. Few airmen living there normally use the trains involved. No reports had been received that any of them were among the dead or injured. McARTHUR SEOUL, Korea (UP)—South Korean infantrymen fighting with bayonets tonight recaptured a vital shell-cratered peak overlooking the ancient invasion route to Seoul in a brutal battle that has raged since Monday night. A front line officer said the Korean troops cut a Chinese battalion of 700 men down to 150 in recapturing the crest of White Horse hill on the western front. The peak—main objective of the biggest Communist attack in a year—has changed hands more than a dozen times as both sides threw tanks, artillery and men into the raging battle. A few hours earlier the Chinese rockets shattered buildings. A few hours earlier the Chinese recklessly charged through an Allied artillery barrage and captured the crest. Then they hit the Korean defenders on the south slope but the Republicans held fast. Fighting was only slightly less bitter elsewhere along the front as the big Red offensive moved into its third day. Allied warplanes rocketed overhead, plastering Red lines directly behind the front. Smith's resolution for ordering sewers was lost for want of a second. It is a new board "policy" to require sewers "where economically feasible," but Boorey successfully showed that it was not in his case. "The merged radar track over Japanese territory, southeast for a few moments then disappeared from the scope. A statement from Mathewson's office said the plane, a C-47 medical evacuation aircraft on a routine flight through the prescribed air corridor over the Soviet zone of Germany to Berlin, was approached by two MIG15 fighters about 90 miles southwest of Berlin near Koennern. The American pilot flew his airplane through a cloud bank, evading the Soviet aircraft. Canyon Fire Still Raging Fire still raged out of control today in the Sockwell Canyon area of Carbon Canyon and 330 acres have been ravaged so far. State Forest Ranger Joe Scherman of Orange headquarters revised his estimate after the fire swept away from the weary smoke-eaters last midnight and feared that control may not be effected until 6 o'clock tonight. By tonight, Scherman said, at least 250 acres will have been burned over. The fire is burning slowly in rugged, brush-covered country, the rough terrain making control difficult. ROSSVILLE, Ga. Anaheim Youths Leave Home; Two Held by Police Two Anaheim youths left their homes last night and went to Modesto, and two other boys who were to have met them there today were in custody at the Los Angeles Juvenile department, according to police records. The father of one of the boys reported to Anaheim police that his son was missing, but he did not want to file a missing persons report. He told officers two other boys who were to meet the missing pair in Modesto had been instructed to tell them to return home by noon today. Later police here were notified by the Los Angeles Juvenile department that two Anaheim youths enroute to Modesto had been picked up in the Greyhound bus depot in L.A. They were being held until their parents came for them. One of the boys in custody reportedly had his parents permission to make the trip. The other boy did not. When the parents of the two boys already in Modesto heard of the pickup in Los Angeles, one of the fathers decided to drive to Modesto to return the boys to their home.
