Nat'l Newspaper Week Observance To Stress Freedom of the Press By WALTER A. BROWN Chairman, 1958 CNPA National Newspaper Week Committee. The right of American people to have free and unrestricted information is the 1952 theme of National Newspaper Week to be observed of a free press in this year's celebration stems from the following statement: "It is extremely important for the American people to realize that freedom of the press is a principle placed in the Constitution for their benefit, rather than for the benefit of the newspaper publishers." The statement was made this year by Robert A. Vogeler, American business executive, held prisoner of the Reds in Hungary for 17 months. In California observance of the week will have Wednesday, Oct. 1, as "Your Right To Know Day." Editorial Day will be celebrated Oct. 2; Advertising Day Oct. 3; Newspaperboy Day Oct. 4; Religion and the Peace Day Oct. 5; Employees Day Oct. 6; Newspaper Readers' Day Oct. 7, and Community Day Oct. 8. Long, in his present post 25 years representing both metropolitan dailies and small weeklies, is credited as one of the industry's most ardent foes of persons or policies "which threaten to gag the press." An alumnus of Denison university in Granville, Q., Long holds a special citation for "outstanding achievements reflecting honor upon the university." He is credited with helping organize the National Advisory Council of the National Editorial Association; the California Newspaperboy Foundation; the CNPA Industrial Relations Bureau; the Pacific Coast Division of the American Newspaper Publishers' Association Bureau of Advertising; the Pacific Coast Mechanical Conference; the Editors' Confer- Stanton Lions to Have Open House The Stanton Lions Community clubhouse will have open house with the Lions as hosts on Saturday night, Oct. 4, according to S. S. Muraoka, secretary. The county board of supervisors have authorized a call for bids to be published on the purchase of tax anticipation notes for the Cypress elementary school district. Bids to be advertised in the amount of $30,000. The date for the opening bids has not been set but the notes will be repaid Dec. 31 when tax collections are made. AUHS will call for bids on $100,000 at the same time. This will carry the schools over the "dry" period until taxes come in. NEW YORK (P)—Lt. Gen. Willis D.
