MAYBE you have never even heard of the Southwest Exploration Company. We wouldn't be surprised.
But you may be sure that it is a very familiar name to tax collectors in Orange County—because this Company is one of the largest contributors to the tax revenues of the County.
WHAT DOES THE COMPANY DO?
Even new residents of Orange County know about the oil wells at Huntington Beach, drilled from shore to oil deposits two miles out under the ocean—without marring the scenic beauty of the shore line or interfering in any way with the public's enjoyment of the beach.
It is the Southwest Exploration Company that drills and operates those tideland wells—under leases granted after open, competitive bidding, by the state to prevent the drainage of oil by wells on privately owned property on the adjacent shores. Development of this unique operation has attracted world-wide interest.
WHO BENEFITS—and HOW DO THEY?
First of all, as a resident of Orange County you will be interested in knowing that we are one of the largest contributors to the tax revenues of the County—last year alone, our property tax bill was

Secondly, we pay the state a very high royalty—more than twice as much as the 12½% required under Federal leases. The money obtained California is earmarked for veterans' welfare, beach improvement, parks, recreation and the general fund.
Thirdly, we pay substantial taxes also to the state and Federal governments—more than $2,625,000 in 1952.
As you know, it takes taxes to pay for the construction and maintenance of bridges and roads—to pay for police and fire protection—for equipment maintenance of play ground facilities or building schools and for the paying of others—for the construction of public buildings and salaries of the people needed to conduct the affairs of the Community.
Naturally nobody enjoys paying taxes, but it is gratifying to us to contribute so much to the community in which you and we and our employees live and work. We believe we are good neighbors and hope you agree that "if a company were known by the taxes it pays, our name would be as familiar to you as your favorite soap, cereal, cigarette and gasoline."
