Here's How One Decorator Would Make Large Livingroom More Cozy
By JOAN S. WHITE
Gazette Home Economist
"It's time for a change," said Mrs. W. C. Birmley. She was referring not to the political scene but to the arrangement of her living room.
St. Michael's To Celebrate St. Michael's Day
This Sunday, Sept. 28, at 8:30, 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. four great rally services in honor of St. Michael's Day, Sept. 29, will be held by the church members of St. Michael's Episcopal church.
In August, 1873, the first formal service of the Episcopal church was held by the Rev. Charles Loop on the second floor of a store building in Anaheim. In 1876 the present redwood village Gothic church was completed. Present members will remember the many faithful ministers and people of the past as they attend services this Sunday.
Holy Communion will be held at 8 a.m. 9:30 a.m. will be family morning prayer and classes, including the rector's study class of confirmation instructions. At 11 a.m. the senior choir will sing "The Heavens are Declaring," and the rector of St. Michael's, the Rev. J. K. Saville, will preach on "The Bible is the Word of God."
At 12:30 p.m., following the 11 o'clock service, there will be a family picnic at the west end of La Palma park. At the 7 p.m. Even Song service the rector will begin a second series of confirmation instructions.
Local Girl's Idea Wins Wrist Watch
June Millard, 10, of 9071 Holder, Anaheim, has just won a 17-iewel ingroom.
Here is what happened. We quote Mrs. Birmley's letter to the "Homemakers' Forum" in the Anaheim Gazette in part:
"Wonder if you can help me or tell me who to contact to receive the help I need. Have been wrestling with the problem of how to make my large living room give the impression of coziness with the furniture I have. Out of state guests are coming over the Labor day holiday and they expressed an interest in seeing our new home, so naturally I'd love to have help with this room before then."
Help on the Way
Help hustled over to Mrs. Birmley's house: help in the form of the Gazette's home economist, and Russell Ireland, decorator for the Smith-Reafsnyder Furniture Co.
The living room is large, alright, to the tune of 18x25 feet. With north-east exposure, furniture hugging tightly to the four walls, and the chilling effect of grey asphalt tile on the floor and the predominance of the color green in the decor, the room seems cold instead of cozy and certainly presents a problem.
The problem is further complicated by the fact that the Birmley's expect to retire to trailer living within three years and it seems impractical to them to spend a lot of money to redecorate a room they will not be using for long. What do you do in the meantime?
Room's Strong Points
Mr. Ireland, whose background includes a college degree in interior decoration and many highly successful years in the field, was quick to seize upon the room's strong points and work from there.
Three walls of the room are of knotty pine that give warmth and informality. The fourth one, papered in plain green paper, could easily be painted a pale yellow right over the paper. A floor covering of dumplings.
How would you do livingroom in the home of C. Birmley of 8172 Sta which Mrs. Joan White, omist, and Russell Irre reach, and a well balanced reel group composed of floor comfortable chair and end t The room's two divans would center of the stage, gro together to form an L, co could be.
Fire Colors
To enhance the feeling warmth, Ireland suggested pick up from pale yellow to burnt orange in the upholstery design of davenport. These could be in duced in draperies, lamp shades and accessories. The excellent selection of new plastic draperies the market offers an inexperience source of handsome window dings.
Color and light are altogether lacking in the corner of the rear adjacent to the front door.
Local Girl's Idea Wins Wrist Watch
June Millard, 10, of 9071 Holder, Anaheim, has just won a 17-jewel wrist watch for a bright idea.
Smarty-pants patches, the slap-on and peel-off cloth squares now decking teen-agers' jeans, are printed with gags and cartoons. The makers wanted a new edition. Prizes were offered during the summer for fresh ideas.
June offered the stern injunction, "Scratch no matches on my patches." She is one of 160 young winners chosen from the thousands of entries.
An obviously normal little girl from Canada won a prize, too. Her patch reads, "Slow—School Zone. Phooey!"
A floor covering of durable rattan matting put together in squares would tie in with the knotty pine and nullify the chilling effect of the gray asphalt tile.
To make a 9x12 mat feasible and at the same time pave the way for interesting furniture groupings, he suggested shifting a divan away from the wall and out into the room as a room divider. By turning its back, this room divider would have the effect of making a separate dining area for that part of the room which is used for dining occasionally.
Further furniture changes would create a music corner with radio and phonograph within easy reach.

HOW WOULD YOU DO IT?—Above is the livingroom in the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. Birmley of 8172 Starr st., Stanton, on which Mrs. Joan White, Gazette home economist, and Russell Ireland, Smith-Reaf-snyder decorator, went to work. Mrs. Birm-ley wants it redecorated to counteract the cold feeling of too much space and colors lacking in warmth.
