Business Index Shows Rebound to Record Level After Steel Strike
Business activity in the southern half of California rebounded to a near-record level in August after declining for two months as a result of the steel strike. B. W. Jordan, manager of Security-First National bank's Anaheim branch, announced today.
The bank's August business index rose to within a half point of last May's all time high, as reported in the bank's monthly summary of business conditions, and was 8 per cent above a year ago.
Department store sales in the Los Angeles area increased last month to a level nearly 20 per cent above that recorded in August of last year. During the first eight months of 1952, department store sales in the metropolitan area were 8 per cent above the comparable period in 1951. This gain is heavily concentrated in new stores which have been opened in the suburbs, the bank stated.
Unemployment in the Los Angeles metropolitan area declined in August to a point nearly six per cent under a year ago. The number of unemployed was the smallest recorded in any August since the end of World War II.
At the same time, employed toped 2,000,000 last month for the first time in history of the area. The California department of employment reported 2,026,600 employed in the Los Angeles metropolitan area.
Factory employment has continued to expand at a rapid rate. Wage and salary workers increased 18.6 per cent in the last 12 months. These 67,000 additional jobs in manufacturing account for more than 80 per cent of the increase in employment during the past year.
Aircraft employment, although temporarily reduced by strikes at Lockheed and the Douglas El Segundo plant, expanded more than 27 per cent during the 12 months ended in mid-August. This gain in aircraft employment accounted for more than 62 per cent of the gain noted in manufacturing in the Los Angeles area and more than half the total gain in employment in all lines.
New industrial plants and expansions announced during August for Los Angeles county involve an estimated $24,597,000 investment. This includes a $20,-000,000 brewery by the Jos. Schlitz Brewing Co. of Milwaukee on a 35-acre site in Van Nuys and a $1,000,000 expansion of American Brake Shoe Co. at its plant in Azusa.
