Danson IN THE DAYS OF LONG AGO From the Files of Anaheim Gazette By MRS. HENRY KUCHEL 75 Years Ago September 1877 A meeting of the fire company will be held this evening at Pete Richard's saloon, in the Gazette building. Notice of the meeting will go given by the ringing of the fire bell. R. W. Scott was confined to his bed with a fever yesterday. Miss McWhirter vacated her dressmaking establishment on Center st. yesterday. We understand that she intends visiting for some time at the seaside. There was a terrible commotion in the Chinese quarters yesterday. Officer Wartenberg arrested a woman for some cause and the Celestials were highly indignant about the matter. The Anaheim Water company resolved at their meeting on Saturday to commence legal proceedings against those parties who are using water which they consider rightfully belongs to the Anaheim ditch. The hearing in regard to the proposed change of boundaries between the Anaheim and Orange-thorpe school districts before the board of supervisors has been postponed. Deputy Sheriff Barham has been busy for several days dispossessing parties from lands belonging to the Los Angeles and San Bernardino Land Co. on Las Bolsas. R. W. Scott was on the streets yesterday, having so far recovered from his illness to be able to look after his law business in general. 25 Years Ago September 1927 The Bastanchury Ranch company has 2000 acres in tomatoes. This season the acreage stretches from Northam station north of Buena Park as far east as the town of Olinda. Plans are being made to handle the bulk of the tomatoes about the latter part of September. The crop has been estimated at an even greater figure than last year, when a bumper crop was recorded. Green tomatoes will be handled by the Bastanchury ranch packing house, and the ripe tomatoes will be taken care of by the Cutler-Lobinger cannery which is located on South Highland ave., Fullerton. Mr. and Mrs. Jimmie Holcomb are the proud parents of a bouncing baby boy born to them in Calexico, Aug. 12. Jimmie is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Chester Holcomb of Fullerton. Mother and child are doing well. The thermometer registered 125 degrees the day of the child's birth. Seventy boys from all over Orange county, left Saturday for their week at the YMCA boys camp Osceola. This group is known as the "younger boys" group, being under 12 years of age. The camp occupies a space of about 10 acres on the South Fork of the Santa Ana river, above Seven Oaks. Anaheim boys in the party were Donald Schneider, Alvin Morris, La Vern Roquet, Russell Roquet, Glen Shoemaker, Carl Knott, Bill Knott, Frank Ashleigh, Wesley Laufenback, Jack Reuther, Gordon Mildrum, James Macres, Albert Macres and Gall Vary. Scott was on the streets yesterday, having so far recovered from his illness to be able to look after his law business in general and his chances for the assembly in particular. There was a slight unpleasantness in Santa Ana on Sunday, arising from a misunderstanding relating to a poker game. The boys in Santa Ana seem to be better fixed than their Anaheim brethren. Here there is not money enough to ante with, and the advent of a candidate is the only prospect for a drink. Shipments from the depot this morning were four empty barrels, three boxes of bottles, three beer kegs, one keg wine, two cases eggs, one box butter, 138 cattle, 400 sheep. We have the following list of delegates to the Republican county convention from precinct outside of Los Angeles city: Anaheim, J. M. Guinn, H. Blanken, D. E. Miles; Azusa, C. Vaughn; Cahuenga, C. A. Darlington; Clenaga, Milton Lindlay; Duarte, W. Muth-Rasmussen; Compton, J. P. West; C. S. Fischer; El Monte, D. Snyder; Garden Grove, Con Howe; Florence, J. G. Hunt orange grove on North street has been sold to D. J. Shea of Redlands. The ranch consists of 18½ acres, and the price paid is reported to have been $100,000. The 10 acre Weber grove near Garden Grove was sold some days ago to John Peipenbrink of Placentia, consideration being $50,000. Bob Fowler, Roy Mendoza, Joe Wagner and Lloyd Fortune returned Monday morning from Monterey county where they were successful in getting four, fine fat deer. One of the deer was eaten in camp, the meat from two was dried and the carcass of one has been placed in cold storage at Fred Schneider's meat market. J. P. Baumgartner of Santa Ana, member of the state highway commission, addressed the Anaheim Lions last week at their regular luncheon meeting at Elks clubhouse. Albert Landolt, aged 79 years, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ernst Borchert of Garden Grove road on Thursday as the result of injuries received a week previous in an automobile accident when he was knocked down, at the intersection of Center and Los Angeles sts. Deceased was a native of New York city and a Mason. Rev. A. G. H. Bode conducted funeral services. Interment was in Los Angeles. He is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Ernst Borchert and a sister, Mrs. E. R. Blake of Chicago. TODAY'S CROSS-WORD PUZZLE KNX—Carl Smith—Happens Every Day Mr. Info.
