ANAHEIM Daily THE ANAHEIM GAZETTE WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1870 AS A WEEN VOLUME LXXXI ANAHEIM, ORANGE COUNTY, CALIFORNIA, THURSDAY, SEPT Nixon Calls War's Dead 'Buy in Anaheim' Drive Lead Regain By Boy Scouts with Heaviest Vote Yet Total Vote Nears Nine Million As BSA Heads for Two Million Mark After a two-day vacation from the lead in The Gazette's great "Buy in Anaheim" campaign, Boy Scouts of America came back to-day with the largest vote of the campaign, 494,300 votes, to recapture first place from Bethel Baptist church. BSA now has 1,640,800 votes, Bethel Baptist 1,473,400. St. Michael's Episcopal church and White Temple Methodist church shared honors for second largest gainer, each receiving 72,700 votes. Other heavy gains were made by Zion Lutheran, 52,600; St. Boniface church, 46,000; and Lois Rebekah Lodge 268, 28,700. No new organizations were entered in the campaign as of today, but the participating organizations now number exactly 100, a truly remarkable indication of the interest residents of this area are taking in The Gazette's community solidarity campaign. Four Persons Injured in Series Of Orange County Traffic Wrecks Four persons were injured in a series of Orange county traffic accidents reported today by the California highway patrol. Mrs. Ellen Kanelle, 59, Los Angeles, was taken to Orange county hospital last evening with minor injuries received when a car driven by her husband, George M. Lewis tucked a hard coal royalty boost into his trophy belt today and began trying to win over soft coal owners one by one to his contract terms. Lewis, head of the United Mine Workers, was reported dangling an exemption from next Monday’s expected northern soft coal strike in front of some big Illinois operators. Most of the soft coal industry, however, seemed to be steadfastly set against bowing to the union chief’s money demands. Lewis has charmed a selective strike, ordering his men to (1) quit mines belonging to the Bituminous Operators association—representing most northern mines—next Monday, and (2) halt work in the Southern Coal Producers association's mines on Oct. 1. The diggings represented by the two associations produce about 70 per cent of the nation's soft coal. Most of the mines west of the Mississippi river are to keep working. And a number of important mines belonging to neither of the big employer associations including the Big Ben Coal Co. of Illinois, are also strike-exempt. TV-Wattched The whole process was witnessed from beginning to end on a television screen on the ship. A camera was installed in the cockpit of the robot plane and it recorded for posterity the historic flight. Lt. Comdr. Lawrence A. Kurtz directed the world's first robot plane attack, told reporters at a Tokyo news conference today that this nation has enough guided missiles in hand to sustain a large-scale robot campaign in Korea. He painted this frightening picture of warfare of the future: Aircraft carriers speeding around the globe and unloosing robot planes carrying atomic bombs. Pilotless planes unerringly seeking out their targets and exploding their deadly charges with maximum force. Robot Warfare Large-scale robot attacks against which there are no defenses. Kurtz said the equipment used, meaning an out-of-flat World War II plane, the Grumman, was "rather obsolete." "We have better things than this," he said, adding that the navy has "immediately available enough missiles to mount a sustained large scale robot campaign in Korea." GM Requested To Abandon Wage Escalator DETROIT (UP)—Bound by contract until 1955, the CIO United Auto Workers are asking General Motors to go beyond their historic cost of living pact and grant immediate wage and pension benefits. If G. M., the industry's pattern setter for years, agrees, the union presumably will ask Ford, Chrysler and other auto companies with similar contracts to do likewise. The UAW disclosed yesterday that informal discussions on the subject, as secret as the contract negotiations themselves, have been held recently. But the talks reportedly have been brief so far. General Motors declined comment on their nature. The union's National General Motors council, representing some 350,000 G. M. workers throughout the country, touched off the drive for contract improvements. Fire Fighters Battle Carbon Canyon Blaze Firefighters and equipment from three counties were flushed into action today to attack a brush fire that flared up fiercely in the dense brush of the Chino hills near Carbon canyon highway. It was believed that the blaze would be under control by tonight. Origin of the fire, which was discovered just after 9 a.m., has not been determined. It was located in extremely rugged ground near the junction of Orange, San Bernardino and Los Angeles counties, a short distance up the canyon from La Vida Hot springs. There was no wind in the area and firefighters said that no inhabitants were immediately threatened. State Forest Ranger Joe Scherman, Orange, directing the fire fighting, summoned help from neighboring counties. Three rigs from Los Angeles county, four from San Bernardino county and ten from Orange county were on the scene quickly and began taking measures to control the fire, which by noon had covered approximately 30 acres and was spreading slowly. Supplementing the fire fighting crews were two crews of 25 men each sent from Chino state prison, located about ten miles away. SPRINGFIELD, O.—TAFT BOOSTS IKE—Speaking from under a huge photo of Republican presidential candidate Dwight D. Eisenhower, Sen. Robert A. Taft last night delivered his first speech urging election of the general. He addressed a crowd of 2100 persons at a party rally. Senator Taft also urged the election of his younger brother, Charles P. Taft, a portion of whose photo is at upper left, as governor of Ohio. Izaak Waltons Oppose Federal Power Project Taking the position that control of a state's natural resources belong to the state, rather than Federal government, Santa Ana chapter of the Izaak Walton League, last night passed a resolution calling upon the Federal Power commission to deny permit for a proposed dam on the Namekagon river in northwestern Wisconsin. Wisconsin conservationists have enlisted support of the Izaak Walton League nationally, and all chapters have been invited to attend. Taft Looses First Blast For Eisenhower SPRINGFIELD, O. (AP) — Sen. Robert A. Taft said last night that only the election of Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower as president can change the philosophy of government spending and power. "Gen. Eisenhower has stated without qualification his belief in the philosophy of liberty," Taft told a Republican rally opening his 19-state tour in behalf of the man who beat him for the presidential nomination. "He stated it long before I met 'Vote Yes on Anaheim’s $1,000,000 Utility Bond Issue,' Local Junior Chamber of Commerce Urged Anaheim Junior Chamber of Commerce members last night were informed of the reasons behind the proposed $1,000,000 city utilities bond issue, which will appear on the ballot at a special election set for Sept. 29. City Administrator Keith Murdoch told the Jaycees the bond issue is necessary to finance improvement and expansion of city service installations to keep up with the burgeoning growth of the city. Revenues have not been enough to permit improvement of electrical and water systems during the past four or five years, he revealed. In addition, new installations are required to keep up with constantly increasing new industries and extensive new residential developments. Therefore, he said, the city, like any corporation, finds it necessary either to borrow money with which to make the needed additions and unkeep or find revenues to finance it from other sources. Avoid Rate Hike "Other sources' mean increased taxes or higher rates for service, either alternative taking more money from the Anaheim resident's pocket," Murdoch explained. "On the other hand," he continued, "the proposed bond issue, if approved, will be repaid out of current revenues of the City Service department. In this way, neither taxes nor utility rates will have to be increased, new utility consumers will pay their share of the cost of new installations and the city will be able to meet its commitments efficiently and painlessly." Not only will current revenues from the expanded light power and water systems repay the bond issue." Murdoch added, "they will also be sufficient to cover current costs at the same time." Two Bonds Asked Separate bond issues of $500,000 each, one for light and power, the other for water, will be proposed on the ballot. Murdoch strongly urged a "Yes" vote on each of them. Jaycee President Bob Heinz recently returned from a tour of duty with the Air Force Reserve in the East, presided over the meeting and announced a District 8 meeting in Laguna Beach Oct. 5. September 27 is the date set for a Jaycee family beach party at Laguna if the weather is favorable. If it is cool, the club will picnic at Anaheim City park instead. Dan Trabant was a guest of the club.
