County Area Asks Inclusion in Sanitary District
Application of an area in western Orange county for annexation to county sanitation district No. 3 raised the question at last night's meeting of the sanitation district boards whether such territory should be required to pay back taxes of the district and other items connected with capacity rights in sewer lines.
The question was raised when Attorney Jack J. Rimel of Santa Ana filed petition for annexation on behalf of approximately acres west of Harbor City, be led by Garden Grove blvd., Spindale ave., Folsa Chica rd. Westminster blvd.
Don Haiber, Placentia city who is a member of district board, raised the point of mention of back taxes, pointing that the territory now in the trict has paid two years of levies. Director Nelson La Habra, who is general manager of the present joint our system, added that there are problems involving cap rights in trunk lines to be con-

Danson Derides Wise Guys Who Predicted Death of Radio in '51
By TOM DANSON
HOLLYWOOD—Last year the "wise guys" said radio's dead. This year they're not talking. Because while they were handing out the black crepe, the top stars—Jack Benny, Bob Hope, Amos 'n' Andy, Bing Crosby, Fibber McGee and Molly, Edgar Bergen, Eve Arden, Marie Wilson, Gene Autry and the rest—went right on doing their shows just as they had for years and as they are doing again this new fall season.
In spite of the gloomiest predictions, radio just won't roll over and die. To the prophets of broadcasting's doomsday, this seems almost indecent, but there it is.
“If radio’s dead, we’re making more money out of a corpse than Forest Lawn ever did,” Jack Benney says of his network CBS radio show.
“Radio dead?” Bing Crosby asks. “Why, there are 105 million radio sets in use in the United States right now—76 million in homes, another 27 million in automobiles.
“Radio goes on vacations with people. It goes with them to the beaches, the parks, the picnics.”
Dealers report that 10 million more radios were sold last year alone—more than twice as many radios sold as television sets.
“People aren't buying these sets so they can be used as book-ends,” Edgar Bergen points out.
Actually, big-time network radio is facing its biggest season since the advent of television, according to sales reports from all four networks. CBS, NBC, ABC and MBS.
Sentimental considerations aside, the stars wouldn't be there if the audience wasn't.
Sponsors are funny that way!
By latest surveys, more than 14 million people listen in the middle of the morning, 14 million in the afternoon, 25 million at night.
with Douglas Fairbanks and Bebe Daniels, and a newcomer named Bing Crosby who does a production number... Ed Gardner has decided to make "Duffy's Tavern" movies on his own now that he and NBC have tiffed... This fall, Mrs. Donald O'Connor will play Mrs. Donald O'Connor on his TV show... After filling in for Arthur Godfrey, Celeste Holm has been offered a similar program of her own by the nework... First anniversary bells are dinging for Eve Arden and her husband Brooks West... The much publicized Marilyn Monroe says that sex appeal is just a frame—of mind!

County VFW to Hear Famous Racing Driver
Ralph de Palma, dean of automobile racing and winner of more races than any other man in history, will recount his many experiences on Wednesday night. Sept. 17 at 8 p.m. when he addresses the Orange county VFW at Ziegler park, Westminster.
Winner of the 1915 Indianapolis 500-mile race, De Palma recalls how history nearly repeated itself in this year's classic. Billy Vukovich, who was leading the pack and with but eight laps to go for first place, sheared the steering arm pin, hit the crash wall and was out of the running. Da Palma remembers well the 1912 race with only two laps to go and the nearest car nine laps in the rear, his powerful Mercedes broke a connecting rod. He and his mechanic pushed the machine across the finish line to finish lap 198, still three laps ahead of the second place car. The main difference between these two tragic occurrences is that Yukovich collected a sizable sum of money as lap prizes—De Palma didn't collect a cent.
Now a member of General Petroleum Corp.'s public relations department, De Palma has addressed thousands of high school youngsters in recent months on behalf of traffic safety.
In all the 40 years of the Indianapolis race, De Palma has either competed in or viewed all but three. And, although he hasn't raced on the famed track since 1927, he still holds the record for number of laps in the lead with 613.
To illustrate his talk on Sept. 17, De Palma will show a thrilling motion picture in color of the 500-mile race.
