Mrs. Mary Beck McClelland. 24, of San Pablo, Calif., arrived here last night to meet with Mr. and Mrs. Michael Moroney, parents of Mary Agnes Moroney, who was 2 years old when she was kidnapped in Chicago in 1930. Police still list the case as unsolved, the oldest unsolved case in the files of the Chicago missing persons' bureau. Mrs. Moroney, 40, said last night she hoped her mother's instinct will tell her whether Mrs. McClelland really is her daughter. The Moroneys have seven other daughters and sons, four of whom live at home. The Oakland, Calif., Tribune said yesterday that new scientific techniques have identified Mrs. McClelland as the missing Moroney child. The Tribune and the Chicago Daily News last February first raised the possibility that she might be the kidnap victim. Last winter, Dr. E. W. Merrithrew, a physician at Martinez Calif., said he had arranged for the adoption of Mrs. McClelland in 1927 and that she was definitely not the kidnapped Moroney child. Dr. Merrithew declined, on ethical grounds, to name the child's parents. The Moroney child was kidnapped on May 15, 1930, by a well-dressed young woman posing as a social worker, who took the child to buy her some clothes. Mrs. Moroney was told the next day by a woman telephone caller her daughter was being taken to California and would be returned in two months. But it was nearly 22 years later that the search reached California, after Mrs. McClelland's husband Everett noted marked resemblance between his wife and pictures of the Moroney family published in the Oakland Tribune with a story of the case. grandma's book and pickle a few crab apples, peaches, apricots or small pears by the following recipe: Sweet Pickled Crab Apples 3 lbs. crab apples (or other fruit as noted above) 6 cups of granulated or brown sugar 3 cups cider vinegar 1 cup water 6 in. stick cinnamon (at least) 2 teaspoons whole cloves 2 teaspoons whole allspice Wash crab apples. Add crab apples and boil until tender, which will take about 10 minutes. Let stand in the kettle overnight. Next morning pack fruit loosely in hot sterilized jars. Heat syrup to boiling, remove the spice bag and pour the syrup over the fruit. Seal. Makes about six pints. Sweet Spreads With Anaheim food markets early bursting with a bountiful harvest of luscious looking fruits at the peak of perfection, home cookers with an eye toward win-win meals are turning to the pre-picking kettle. Thanks to powdred pectins (manufactured right here in Anaheim) really good jams and jellies are a cinch to make and a small amount of fruit jams out a whale of a lot of bread made by the modern quick cooking methods. Sunny Peach Jam 5 cups granulated sugar 4 cups diced peeled freestone cherries Grated peel of 2 oranges Grated peel of one lemon 4 cup lemon juice 2½-oz. package powdered pecans 3 cup sliced maraschino cherries (optional). Measure sugar and set aside. Rush diced peaches in large ketle. Stir in grated peels, lemon juice and pectin. Heat quickly boiling, stirring all the while. Add sugar, bring to full rolling boil for 4 minutes. Stir constant-temperature. Add cherries. Remove from heat and stir and skim for five minutes. This will plump the pieces of fruit so they will not float. Ladle into hot, sterilized jars and seal at once. Yields about four pints. Grandmother's meals were memorable first because she was such fine cook, and second because generally sprung an unexpected surprise.
