Anaheim Musicians Entertain at 'Community Night' Stanton Meet Three young Anaheim musicians provided the entertainment for the first "Community Night" meeting, staged jointly by Stanton Lions club and Chamber of Commerce in the Lions clubhouse last night. Delores Giardino, senior at AUHS, and a soprano winner of the Atwater Kent auditions here two years ago, sang three numbers. Nolan Blackman, a junior and employed as soloist with the Frank Lucetti orchestra, sang two baritone solos. Both vocalists were accompanied at the piano by Miss Frances Cowee, an AUHS graduate of 1950. Miss Cowee, now in her first year at Fullerton Junior college, will attend USC on a music scholarship won at AUHS. Speaker of the evening was Willis Warner, chairman of the board of county supervisors, who discussed the barriers to a solution of the county's flood control problems. Primary obstacle, according to Warner, is the fact that the county flood control tax rate is still 10 cents per $100 of assessed valuation as it was in 1920 when flood control was first organized. Another factor, he pointed out, is the doubled cost of constructing flood control installations. A proposed Stanton-Barber City drainage project was estimated to cost $125,000 before the Korean war. Now it would cost double that figure, he said. Warner acknowledged that not much progress has been made in his 14 years on the board, and was dubious of much accomplishment until the state legislature permits a boost in the tax rate. Sunkist Field Manager Dies Stricken suddenly with a heart attack on Aug. 31, Arthur E. Nelson, manager of the field department of Sunkist Growers, passed away that afternoon. He was 59 years of age and had been continuously employed by the citrus marketing cooperative since 1920. A native of Minnesota, Mr. Nelson graduated from the University of California's College of Agriculture in 1917. During the next three years he was connected with the U. S. Department of Agriculture. From 1920 until 1935, he carried on investigational work on packing house problems in the field department laboratory of Sunkist Growers. In 1935, Mr. Nelson was appointed assistant manager of the Sunkist field department, a position he held until he was named manager this past January. Mr. Nelson is survived by his wife, Ellen, and a son and daughter. THE WANT AD NUMBER 2206 Van Deerlin Files Suit Against Paper Lionel Van Deerlin, 28th District candidate for Congrses, filed a $400,000 court action this week against a publisher who assertedly refused to accept his political advertising. Named in the San Diego Federal court complaint was Phillip Rush, publisher of the Southern California Rancher, a monthly farm news journal with 13,000 claimed circulation in Orange, San Diego and Riverside counties. It is alleged that Rush rejected paid advertising from Van Deerlin's campaign committee for the sole reason that he disagrees with the candidate's political views. Van Deerlin is the Democratic party nominee. The suit, was prepared by Attorney Walter Wencke, under anti-monopoly sections of the Sherman and Clayton anti-trust acts. In addition to damages, it asks a mandatory injunction forcing the publisher to accept Van Deerlin's advertising in an amount commensurate with space already allocated to the Republican candidate. It was asserted that Van Deerlin "has a specific farm program regarding possible extension of government price supports perishable commodities." The magazine's refusal to open its advertising columns to him, it was charged, means that (his) political views are excluded from the perusal of the voting public." In explaining the action, Wencke said he feels a publisher has the right to refuse a general class of advertising, such as liquor, drugs or political, but not the right to pick and choose among competitive advertisers in a publication of general circulation. The 28th District covers Orange county, plus suburban and rural San Diego county. Kwikset Employs Defense Exec L. Merle Vernon has been employed by Kwikset Locks to coordinate Kwikset's defense activities with the military establishments and other government agencies, it was announced today by Charles Schubert, director of Kwikset's Defense division. Paul Edmiston In Philippines CLARK AFB—Airman second class Paul D. Edmiston, formerly of 7731 Ball rd., Anaheim, has arrived in the Philippines to serve a tour of duty with the U.S. air force. He is now assigned to the 581st air resupply and communications group, 13th air force at Clark air force base, located 60 miles north of Manila. Before coming to the Philippines, A-2c Edmiston was stationed at Mountain Home, AFB, Idaho. He enlisted in the U.S. air force in August 1951 and took his basic training at Lackland AFB, Texas. Vernon, who has had seven years active military duty with the U.S. Army Ordnance corps, will have the title of defense coordinator for the Anaheim lockset manufacturing company. He served in the Ordnance corps for five years during the war. He was recalled to active duty in 1950 and was discharged last July. Vernon also has served as production foreman for the Fairfax Engineering Co., plant superintendent of Glass Fiber Moulding Co., and vice-president of Alladin Glass Products Co.—all Kansas City, Mo., companies. In the past 1½ years, while on active military duty, Mr. Vernon set up defense work for some 5000 firms throughout the nation who were awarded 1½ billion dollars in defense contracts for artillery ammunition.
