IN THE DAYS OF LONG AGO From the Files of Anaheim Gazette By MRS. HENRY KUCHEL.
75 Years Ago August 1877
From parties engaged in threshing we learn that the barley crop of this section will be much better than was expected.
Hon. Zach Chandler, late secretary of the Interior and Geo. C. Gorham arrived in Los Angeles yesterday.
The case of the inhabitants of the town of Anaheim vs F. Mendoza and Juan Miranda, for violation of Ordinance 13, section 12, of the Town of Anaheim, came up before Justice Bailey yesterday, and the jury returned a verdict of not guilty.
A Chinaman has been employed for the last two days wetting down Los Angeles street in front of the Star Restaurant. The street is considerably improved thereby.
Five hundred dollars have been set aside by the managers of the Southern District Agricultural Society for premiums on stock and produce.
A vacquero undertook to break a bronco on Centre street, ignorant of the fact that such a proceeding is contrary to an ordinance of the town of Anaheim. He was, therefore, arrested, but not before the unruly horse which he was riding had done considerable damage to a wagon owned by Tim Boege. The vacquero will be sent to pay for breaking the wagon.
A locket with a masonic emblem and the letters FWA engraved thereon was lost yesterday. The finder will receive a suitable reward by leaving it at this office.
Eight new directors were added to the board of directors of the Anaheim National bank at a recent meeting of the stockholders, and the capital and surplus was practically doubled. The new directors are: Dr. J. W. Truxtaw, Anaheim physician; James Tuffree, Placentia rancher; Edward Kelly, Ben Baxter, J. H. Brunsworth, all Anaheim ranchers; Ernest Ganahl of the Ganahl-Grim Lumber company, Henry P. Campbell of the Backs, Terry & Campbell undertaking parlors, and Frank Baum, local real estate dealer.
Judge J. S. Howard and his daughter, Miss Adele, have returned from Flagstaff, Arizona, after an absence of six weeks. Miss Adele attended a summer session at the Flagstaff normal school when she graduated with honors two years ago. She has a diploma to teach in both Arizona and California. She will teach in the local schools when studies are resumed here next month. The judge put in his time making new friends in the northern part of Arizona where the weather was very pleasant. The return trip began at 7 o'clock in the morning and

He was, therefore, arrested, but not before the unruly horse which he was riding had done considerable damage to a wagon owned by Tim Boege. The vacquero will be sentenced by Justice Bailey this morning for breaking the ordinance, and Mr. Squires, the owner of the horse, will be compelled.

The hoary head is a crown of glory if it be found in the way of righteousness—Prov. 16:31.
BRIEFLY—Was asked if adobe ever was a building material used extensively in early-day Anaheim? Of course, most of the pioneers used to build earthen homes because the goods of the woods was scarce. In fact historical records show that quite a few homes and public buildings were erected from adobe found at the south end of town... A customer wants to know whom we consider Anaheim's greatest baseballer. Well, we'll say Bobby Adams is Anaheim's greatest now. He's playing great ball for Cincinnati. Hal Gregg was great. His record proves it. But don't forget such Anaheimers as Long Joe Mene and Joe Huarte, they were plenty good, too.
ANECDOTE — You don't hear about Anaheim sportsmen who go fishing or hunting and return with nothing to show for their trips, do you? A lot of them we know actually are having poor luck this year. One fellow we know has been going "hiking" in the tall brush every weekend since the deer season opened. So far he hasn't seen anything that he could even take a shot at... "Going hunting this weekend, Charlie?" one of his compadres asked this morning... "Naw, but I'll take my rifle along when we go hiking," he retorted. Just in case.

ANECDOTE — You don't hear about anaimal television chains are seriously considering TVviewing the 1952 (or 1953) version of the Hallowe'en parade on a nationwide basis It seems that the Hagerstown Md., parade has top priority in that it is oldest such fenow that would be something to tival in the United States Really have a nation-wide TV event emanate from the old home town Fullerton Buena Park and Orange Found TVviewing girls softball from their respective ball parks good business ... Incidentally, Anahelm's radio-TV engineer George Toker is really doing an outstanding job as a TV specialist You've undoubtedly seen some of the program he's helped to air; but the men who do work are always behind the scenes and so you've never seen him on TV.

"Going hunting this weekend, Charlie?" one of his compadres asked this morning... "Naw, but I'll take my rifle along when we go hiking." he retorted. Just in case?... A lot of hunters used to get their deer right in their own back yard. "I've left Anaheim and was back with a deer in 45 minutes," one hunter boasted... "How come you're having such a tough time getting your deer this year?" his amigo asked... "I'm older now..."... "What difference does that make?"... "Pull-en-teel!" was the reply. "I can't run as fast as I used-ta."
It seems that once upon a time local nimrods would take off, poach on the Irvine ranch. The mounted guards couldn't follow the hunters through the tall brush. They tell us that there is still plenty of game inside the big ranch fences.
QUERY—Registered yet? Now is the time to register for the big November election. The deadline is Sept. 11. If you've moved, or failed to vote in previous elections drop by the town hall and see Charlie Griffith.
REMEMBER—How Hank Chapman, the present U of Texas acquaint mentor, used to hitch hike to Fulterton every morning so he could swim with Albert W. Dow-seen some of the program he's helped to air, but the men who do the work are always behind the scenes and so you've never seen him on TV.
