The committee spokesmen today reiterated assurances given a delegation visiting last night's session, that at present the committee has decided upon no program, and is seeking a starting point. The delegation of 17 persons at the meeting were under the misapprehension, from reading a newspaper report, that the committee planned to place meters upon the wells of all farmers in the basin. They were assured that there was no such intention, and that whatever method is recommended for financing the water replenishment program, will apply to all water users, including citits. The committee passed a resolution which said in substance "The main premise upon which we intend to work is to save the basin from further encroachment from salt water, and that the integrity of fresh water in the basin shall be maintained." Since legislation will be necessary to place in force any program adopted, Chairman Walter Schmid, of Garden Grove, was authorized to name a committee to confer with city attorneys and legal counsel of the water district, to discuss a starting point for the committee's study. Chairman Schmid last night read a letter from Warren Butler, managing editor of the Herald-American, newspaper serving Compton, Lynwood and Bellflower, disclosing that the central basin of Los Angeles county seeks cooperative effort between the two areas, which have similar problems. Chairman Schmid last night read a letter from Warren Butler, managing editor of the Herald-American, newspaper serving Compton, Lynwood and Bellflower, disclosing that the central basin of Los Angeles county seeks cooperative effort between the two areas, which have similar problems. "We in the central basin of Los Angeles county," Butler wrote, "are faced with a closely parallel problem and geologists tell us that there is no clear separation between our basin and that of the Santa Ana river." He suggested that the committees from both basins meet to discuss their common problems, in view of the fact that an interim committee of the state legislature will be conducting hearings in this section in the latter part of October, and will be interested in hearing the local problems. The legislature's committee is now holding hearings in Santa Clara county and the San Joaquin valley. Attending last night's session were: Chairman Schmid, Secretary W. D. Miller, Glenn P. Allen of Orange, Mayor Courtney Chandler of Santa Ana, John W. Crill of Garden Grove, W. B. Hellis of Irvine, John A. Murdy, Jr., of Wintersburg, state senator elect; Walter Knott of Buena Park, Mayor Charles Pearson of Anaheim, Ross Shafer of Tustin, E. T. Watson of Olive and Vernon Langenbeck of Huntington Beach. Alternate members present were Adolph Bosch of Orange and George Vandenberg of Anaheim. The steering committee, which selected the permanent committee, is said to be considering recommendation of an additional member from the Placentia district. The growing number of available scholarships at Santa Barbara college is made possible by gifts and bequests. The awards are made available to entering students as well as those already in attendance. The rating of the candidates for scholarships is based on excellence in high school or college academic record, financial need, promise of future success, and character. Bullet Narrowly Misses Young Boy Accidentally discharged from a 38 caliber revolver in a Santa Ana residence late yesterday, a bullet bounced cross the street and narrowly missed a young boy in a house on the other side. Mrs. Iris Minor, 7066 W. Fairview st., was unloading her husband's revolver when the shot was fired. She said she looked for the bullet but could not find where it had gone. Her neighbors soon told her. The slug had crossed the street, bounced on a sidewalk and entered the living room of Mrs. Dee McKee's home at 715 West Fairview. Passing through the screen door, it shattered a plate hanging on the living room wall. Fragments were spattered against Merlin McKee, 12, who walked into the room at that moment, almost in the path of the bullet.
