Stevenson warns Against Promises Of Tax Slashing
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (UPI)—Gov. Adlai Stevenson, the Democratic party's presidential candidate, believes that "foolish promises" of substantial federal tax cuts can be "very misleading."
Stevenson told a news conference yesterday that everybody wants a reduction in taxes but it must be obtained at the earliest opportunity "consistent with our needs."
Tax Cuts
He was asked by the newsmen concerning Dwight D. Eisenhower's remarks recently about reducing federal taxes, and replied:
Anaheim Teacher Attends Northrop Education Confab
HAWTHORNE. — William V. Rickel, teacher and counselor at the Anaheim schools, was one of a group of California educators in attendance at the two day aviation industry education conference just concluded at the Northrop Aeronautical Institute at Hawthorne, Calif.
The conference was designed to acquaint California educators with present requirements of the aviation and aircraft industries. James L. McKinley, institute director, said.
The NAI conference was keyed closely to an announcement from the Aircraft Industries association which pointed out that although the average U.S. airline cost is $100 per passenger, it still costs more than $200 per passenger.
"I would hope that neither candidate or party would offer hopes that are forlorn and at the same time be demanding a defense establishment to accomplish our common objective."
Eisenhower, the Republican presidential nominee, had envisioned a 40 billion dollar yearly federal spending cut, but he did not specify any date for the goal.
Stevenson said he regarded foreign policy as the "most important consideration" of the coming political campaign. He added that he supposes his views and those of Eisenhower on this subject will turn out to be similar.
He said he no longer is a reluctant candidate for president and is "quite content with the Chicago Democratic convention."
After Five Years Muslim Indians
Before partition in 1947, India was the largest Muslim country in the world. More than 100 million Muslims lived side by side peacefully with other communities in this multi-religious multi-lingual country. After partition, India still has 43 million Muslims living within its territory and has the third largest Muslim population in the world after Indonesia with 70 million and Pakistan with 66 million. The day one out of every eight Indianans is a Muslim.
Pakistan was created as a sult of the demand of a politic party which claimed that Muslim
The conference was designed to acquaint California educators with present requirements of the aviation and aircraft industries, James L. McKinley, institute director, said.
The NAI conference was keyed closely to an announcement from the Aircraft Industries association which pointed out that although the average U.S. aircraft manufacturer needs 150 times as many engineers today as in 1927, there is a constantly decreasing number of engineering graduates in this country. Featured speaker at the conference was Capt. Leland D. Webb, vice president and regional manager of the Aircraft Industries association, who spoke on "The Aircraft Industry and the Engineer Shortage."
In addition to being acquainted by the Northrop institute with training needs, methods, equipment and curricula requirements for aviation careers today, Rickel was a member of a group of educators that toured the Scorpion F-89 production lines at Northrop Aircraft, Inc. The Northrop institute is a division of Northrop Aircraft, Inc.

He said he no longer is a reluctant candidate for president and is "quite content with the Chicago Democratic convention and its results."
Fighting Campaign
Asked if he could make a "give-em-hell campaign," the governor replied "I don't believe I'm gifted with talents of that kind. But I'll give it everything I can."
He parried a question whether he'd keep Secretary of State Acheson if he was elected president by saying "I haven't the faintest idea about the Cabinet and I won't say anything until after the election."

The doll show sponsored by the City Recreation department was held yesterday in the newly completed Optimist clubhouse.
Three hundred dolls were on display. The judges were from the Anaheim Doll club, co-sponsors of the event. The club also donated the sweepstake prize.
Sweepstake winner for the annual event was Joelly Wise, who designed and made a tartan costume for her doll. The outfit was complete with monogrammed undergarments. Also winning ribbons in the best home-made garment division were: Carol Van Verst, Claudia Shiller, Donna Shelly, Maryanne Felbourne, and honorable mention went to Dinia Snell.
The best collection first prize ribbon went to Carol Van Verst

clearly demonstrate the fact that India is a secular state and not a religious state. Muslims have played an important part not merely in the cultural development of India, but also in India's struggle for freedom. Muslims took a leading role in India's first war of independence in 1857, which some history books call the "Sepoy Mutiny." Thousands of Muslims joined the non-cooperation and civil disobedience movements led by Mahatma Gandhi. The Indian national congress many times elected Muslim leaders its presidents. The Muslim contribution to Indian architecture, literature, and culture was extensive in that sented foreign and resources. Joan Mullen, Mr dict, Dona Jean Davis, Alson were runners in division.

The Muslim contribution to Indian architecture, literature, and music is well known. Indian culture, in fact, is not exclusively Hindu, Muslim or Christian. It is a synthesis of all these and more. Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, in one of his recent election speeches, said "All of us, to whatever religion we may belong, are equally the children of India. We cannot encourage communalism or narrow-mindedness, for no nation can be great whose people are narrow-minded in thought or action."
Freedom Guaranteed
The constitution of the Indian republic, which came into force on Jan. 26, 1950, guarantees complete political freedom to Muslims and other religious communities. It further guarantees equality before the law, prohibits discrimination on grounds of religion, and secures equality of opportunity in the matter of public employment. Articles 15, 16 and 25 of the constitution declare:
"The state shall not discriminate against any citizen on grounds of religion." (Article 15.)
"There shall be equality of opportunity for all citizens in matter relating to employment or appointment to any office under the state." (Article 16.)
"All persons are equally entitled to freedom of conscience and the right freely to profess, practice and propagate religion." (Article 25.)

FRIDAY AND AUGUARY
Special YEAR Bargain
Muslims in India are equally abundantly sharing responsibility in administration, education and economic reconstruction of the country. There are Muslims in the federal parliament and state legislatures, who have been elected to represent not merely Muslims but other communities as well. Two important portfolios in the federal cabinet are held by Muslims: Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, minister for education and scientific research, and Mr. Rafi Ahmed Kidwai, minister for food. Muslims have gone out as ambassdors of India to various countries of the world. Free India's first ambassador to the United States was a Muslim, Mr. Asaf All. In like manner, there are governors of states and high-ranking army officers who are Muslims.
Indians First
Nationalism, the dominant political urge in India for decades and shared by all communities alike, has made the Muslims feel that they are Indians first and Muslims second, in exactly the same way as religious groups in America feel that they are Americans first and Catholics and Protestants second. This is the true basis of a secular state and of sound democracy. Jawaharlal Nehru has often declared that he would be the prime minister of India only if all Indians enjoyed equal civic rights. Mahatma Gandhi, India's great leader, laid down his life in defense of these rights. The fair treatment accorded to Muslims during the past five years has produced so much con-
