Shop Friday Night "Til 9 Kandy Bar Kid Set to Write New Chapfers in Marine Corps Annals By JAMES A. MICHENER WITH U.S. FIRST MARINE DIVISION IN KOREA. (AP)—Every once in a while you meet a man whose extraordinary bravery stuns you. But high on anybody's list would have to be an amazing marine called the Kandy Bar Kid. Twenty three-year-old Lyle Lewis of Tacoma, Wash., is phenomenal, even for the marines. He apparently has no nerves, no fear, and no need of sleep. More than 40 times in the last two months he has penetrated Communist lines to a depth of more than two miles, has scouted their positions for periods of up to 40 consecutive hours, and has wandered back to his own lines to report on what the enemy was up to. He has been ambushed by the Chinese five times, has engaged them in pointblank night battles eight or nine times, has lived through several artillery barrages of enormous concentration, has been wounded once and went back behind enemy lines three days after the shrapnel was removed from his leg. Cowboy Style GI Lewis looks the part. Six feet two, slouch hipped, blue eyed, he is quite thin and looks like a fast-shooting cowboy in a B-movie. He has a shaggy crop of red hair that looks as if mice nested in it and an incredible moustache that wanders all over his face like a lost forest. AP PHOTO 'KANDY KID' — Lyle Lewis (above), 23, described as the U.S. Marines "Kandy Bar Kid" who stalks communists behind the lines in Korea, sometimes to a depth of two miles, takes along three candy bars as his rations while on missions lasting as long as 40 hours. His father, L. D. Lewis of Tacoma, Wash., said as a youth he stalked deer in the woods and always carried a ration of candy bars. Lyle's wife and three children reside with his father. Scantily-Clad Advertising Layout Of Arlene Dahl Changed Movie Roles By BOB THOMAS HOLLYWOOD. (P)—Amazing, isn't it, how a single incident can change the course of a movie star's life? Walter Knott Relates History Of Berry Farm The Anaheim council of the lines in Korea, sometimes to a depth of two miles, takes along three candy bars as his rations while on missions lasting as long as 40 hours. His father, L. D. Lewis of Tacoma, Wash., said as a youth he stalked deer in the woods and always carried a ration of candy bars. Lyle's wife and three children reside with his father. He has developed such great skill in pentrating enemy mine fields, cutting barbed wire, probing entrenched positions and lying low among enemy elements that he has revolutionized marine procedure in his sector. I saw him the other night as he started a probe which would take him more than two miles into the heart of what his commanding officer termed "unusually heavily fortified positions." Lewis was dressed in dirty fatigues, helmet and armor proof vest. His face was smeared with black paint and he carried hand grenades and a sub-machine gun. He was a lethal character, headed for one of the toughest jobs a man could get. He would penetrate enemy mine fields, climb to the top of a Communist held hill well inside enemy lines and personally blow up a troublesome machine gun bunker. He grinned through his camouflage and said, "I feel better about this job since the rain started. You can move quieter." He set out through an Asiatic ballburst. One-Man Army His buddies call him the one-man army. Therefore his nickname, the Kandy Bar Kid, comes as a surprise. This deadly fighter has a special trick he uses when it is absolutely vital that he get up to date information. He leaves his own lines at dusk, goes deep inside the enemy positions, finds some natural camouflage and hugs the earth as day breaks. There he lies, in the blazing sun, all though the daylight hours watching enemy dispositions. As the second night begins he usually moves forward in an attempt to take a prisoner or wreck some installation. Thirty six hours later he straggles back to his own line. On such trips he takes with him one cup of water and three candy bars. One of the men who goes out with him says, "You've heard of Gung Ho, Marine for real tough guy. Well, Lewis is both Colonel Gung and Major Ho." Walter Knott Relates History Of Berry Farm The Anaheim council of the Knights of Columbus met Monday night at their hall with Grand Knight Don May presiding at the closed business session to which 150 members had been invited. Dr. Joseph Ersek, lecturer and program chairman, presented Walter Knott who made his first appearance as a speaker before an organization. He told the story of his family, starting 100 years ago, when his mother came by wagon train from Texas. He related how his family settled in Pomona and later in Mohave where they practically starved to death. They moved on to San Luis Obispo where they lived on black-eyed peas and beans. Finally Mr. and Mrs. Knott managed to finance ten acres in Buena Park and started raising boysenberries, which they sold at a small roadside stand. They took a $15,000 option on additional property but were afraid they couldn't make the grade, so Mrs. Knott suggested they raise and sell chickens. This venture was more successful, so they started serving chicken dinners and today own their own small empire, the famed Knott's Berry farm. California Knights are celebrating their 50th year. Aug. 18-20, at their convention in Los Angeles. Members were urged to attend the ball at the Hollywood Palladium on the 20th when Ann Blythe will reign as queen. Arlene Dahl, for example, the turning point in her career may well be when she posed in next-to-nothing for a magazine layout. The pictures appeared in print only a fortnight or so ago, but already her film career has undergone a change. The redhaired beauty explained how it all happened. She had been posing for a "high fashion" layout in one of the sheer night-gowns she has designed and marketed. When producers saw the picture the actress reported, they viewed her in an entirely different light. "They used to think of me to play cool, unattainable heroines," she remarked. "But now I'm getting scripts that would have me as fiery, sexy women. Until now, I have generally drifted over movie set is an ethereal manner. But now I have the chance to play vibrant characters." She was vibrant, all right, when I saw her in costume for "Desert Legion." She reported a dazzling outfit with sheer pantaloons that gave a good view of her shapely gams. Miss Dahl is a busy little bee these days, what with writing a beauty column, incorporating right and left to sell her own fashions and trying to make a go of her marriage to Lex Tarzan Barker. Everything seems to be hunky-dory in the latter department, at least it was as this went to press. Tarzan and his Dahl have split and reconciled in their brief months of marriage. I asked her if their troubles were due to life in Hollywood. "No, our problems have nothing to do with the fact that we are both in pictures," she replied. "They are the same adjustment difficulties that every newly married couple goes through." She declined to elaborate.
