FROM AN EGG-SHAPED HEAD

WELL, TWO GREAT national political conventions are now relegated to the musty pages of history, and 25 years hence no one will know the difference. And thru the glassy stare of TV we all got to watch both of them. This was a fine thing, and Television (one of our giant industries) must be accorded a great accolade for allowing the Common Man to see the great show for only a cent or two a day.
And even the Common Man must thank a mighty corporation (Philco) for sponsoring the Democratic fandangle.
In our household a situation arose during these telecasts which surely must have been duplicated in many other homes. The small fry felt that he was the victim of undemocratic discrimination when the parents ruled that the Wild West movies must take a back seat to the Wild East conventions.
and perhaps induce an anti-social attitude in the boy. He may even turn into a burglar, or a politician.
Anyway, the national conventions produced two strong nominees, and from now to November we shall see spirited battles, open and above-board, all fair and square, with huge, black, slimy, squishy blobs of mud flattening out over more than one hitherto innocent face.
WITH THE FINAL selection of both Republican and Democratic nominees, the squabbling and differences, the bitter cleavage of opinion in the respective parties were forgotten, and raw wounds were bound up and salved with the soothing balm of party harmony. (Laughter).
Ah, but it will be an interesting campaign! On the one side we have an eminent military hero who has even more mass appeal than Clark Gable. On the other, we have a brilliant leader.

"Checking out of the cabin we'd rented, I was quite dimly aware of something bothering me — something I'd forgotten. Suddenly realizing what it was I turned to the clerk and said, 'I'm sorry, but I must return to the cabin. I forgot the key.'"
"The clerk was silent for a moment then she replied, 'I'm afraid going back won't help you. You see, we have no locks for our doors here.' No locks! I thought about this as we drove down the mountainside, back to anxiety and bustle of life in Los Angeles. Then it struck me—this was the symbol of America, my country! No locks, no keys! A very tangible evidence of faith in mankind.
"I had noticed this no locking of doors because it was something different, something one doesn't often find in the scuffle of living. But was it so different after all? Are there not many other signs of our faith in our fellowmen here in America? I can think of many, as I'm sure you can.
"As I waved goodbye to the welcoming committee — the two giant Sequoia trees which had greeted us as we entered the park — I also waved my thanks. For here, in their forest, I had discovered further evidence of America's greatness—and became more deeply aware of its sights and of its spirit."
Concluding the luncheon talk,

Hunts, Boosters Split Two G Series, 1-0 Each, Over Week
In as even-steven a pair of games as ever concocted, Anaheim's City league champions, the Hunt Foods nine, split Friday and Saturday games with the Coolidge, Ariz., Boosters, 1-0 and 1-0 apiece.
Saturday's game, played on the city park diamond, saw the biggest crowd of the year on hand. The Boosters posted their win behind the one-hit pitching of Kenny Law. The winning run was scored in the top half of the eighth when Clint Skla, Coolidge catcher, walked, advanced to second on a sacrifice out, then scored on a single, to center field.
Hunt's Charlie King who garnered the only blow off Law's twirling, threatened to score in the first inning when he walked, stole second and took third on an error.
LAW GAVE one hit, whiffed 13, allowed only one walk. Hunt pitcher Ralph Stulliff gave up one run, 3 base hits, walked three and struck out 17.
Hunts was the victor Friday in a similar tight affair played Friday at Amerige park in Fullerton. The game went 13 innings before Hunts broke through to score the winning run. "Wimple" Jones of Coolidge and Ed Farr of Hunts went all the way in a pitching duel that equalled or even excelled the fine ball chucked the following night.

Concluding the luncheon talk, Larry turned to me and said with wringing sincerity: "I'm proud to be an American and grateful, too, for the opportunity to raise my three boys in a land where law and spirit of its people, they'll be given every chance to develop into men my forebears would be mighty proud of."
Funny, how little, we who have the right to call this country ours, by right of birth here, think about the greatness and privileges afforded us in these well united 48 states, and yet, how much it really means to those who have to work for the right of citizenship.
POST-CONVENTION COMMENTS continue to be heard, especially those of Bob Hope. Here are a few more of his sage remarks, made during the "heal" of the Democratic session; "I loved Gov. Dever's talk." It started out like Frankie Laine and finished like Mel Torme. At the end he sounded like Jack Benny calling for the check... But there's real harmony in the Democratic party. Last night Sen. Kefauver called the Red Cross and pledged eight pints of Harriman's blood... There's so much emphasis on TV here that Sen. Kerr put his eyebrows up in curlers and Harriman got up an hour early to take smiling lessons... Ah, yes, they loved me here. Yesterday the stockyards gave me a 21-Airwick salute."

"Wimpie" Jones of Coolidge and Ed Farr of Hunts went all the way in a pitching duel that equalled or even excelled the fine ball chucked the following night. The winning run came in the last of the 13th when, with one away, Johin Boden, Hunt shortstop, singled for his third hit of the evening. He went to second on an overthrow at first and scored when Chuck King slashed a single to center.
