NEUBAUER If God is for us, who can be against us?—Rom. 8:31. EARTHQUAKE — "If Anaheim gets the shakes again, I'm headin' out?" one of the newcomers remarked following the recent temblor . . . "Where y'goin'?" . . . "Back home!" he replied emphatically . . . "Back with cyclones and tornados?" he was then asked . . . "Well," he reconsidered, "Earthquakes ain't so bad, even if they scare ya half to death!" BACKGROUND—Anaheim and all the rest of Southern California is situated in the so-called earthquake belt. There's nothing new about a quake. Why, the first record of an earthquake in what is now Anaheim was made by Father Juan Crespi with the Don Gaspar de Portola expedition in July 1769 while camping at Olive, just east of the present Anaheim townsite. The year 1812 was known as "El Ano de los Temblores"—or "the Year of Earthquakes"—by Spanish-Californians. It was in the first quake of that year that shocked Anaheim most, though there wasn't anyone here to experience it. That's the quake that felled The first record of having touched California May 9, 1540 when Alcaron with two Acapulco, Mexico, sward to cooperate with expedition of Francisco Coronado seeking Cities of Cibola. Portola expedition in July 1769 while camping at Olive, just east of the present Anaheim townsite. The year 1812 was known as "El Ano de los Temblores"—or "the Year of Earthquakes"—by Spanish-Californians. It was in the first quake of that year that shocked Anaheim most, though there wasn't anyone here to experience it. That's the quake that felled the Mission San Juan Capistrano tower, killing 40 neophytes. That apparently was the most destructive quake Orange county has experienced in recorded time—and that dates back only to about 1769 when the first permanent city — San Diego — was established. SOUTHLANDIA: June 21, 1920, that was rocked by a $100 The remarkable thing all was that only one killed. And on June 29, 1921 quake demolished the district of Santa Barbara am. On Sept. 28, 1542, Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo landed at San Diego. RECORD—One of California's most destructive quakes centered in Owens Valley, March 26, 1972, killing or injuring 60 persons at Lone Pine, Independence, Bishop, Fish Springs and Little Lake. THE BIG ONE—An earthquake that shook California from north to south on April 18, 1906 centered in San Francisco where the subsequent fire burned over an area of eight square miles, killed 250, injured thousands and caused property damage of more than $300,000,000. This quake was before our time, but most of us can recall the tales "old timers" and grandad used to spin about the famous "San Francisco fire." Actually, that was a blessing in disguise. San Francisco—a hurriedly erected boom town—would never have become the city it is without that "leveling" process. SOUTHLANDIA — It was on June 21, 1920, that Inglewood was rocked by a $100,000 quake. The remarkable thing about it all was that only one person was killed. And on June 29, 1925 a severe turbances of nature. No matter where one might go—no finer or safer place could be found than Anaheim. Actually, the only deaths directly caused by the elements—the flood—might have been avoided. MEMO—Let the other morning's temblor serve as a reminder. Mother nature is gentle and yet harsh. If something isn't done to check the Carbon Canyon runoff, Anaheim could have another flood. Let's do something about it! RADIO and TELEVISION TELEVISION Wednesday, July 23 5:00 P.M.
