LANDMARK—Anaheim’s first house reflects the taste of the early German settlers in its trim compact lines, precise geometric patterns and rococco trim. It was built nearly 100 years ago, a tribute to good construction and the enduring quality of redwood.

For Katella Bond Election Available
Residents of the Katella school district who wish to vote in the school bond election but will be vacationing or out of the vicinity on the Aug. 12 election date may secure absentee ballots at the school anytime before Aug. * District Supt. Martin Morocco has revealed.
Balloting, to be done between 12 and 7 p.m., will concern approval or disapproval of a $50,000 bond election to finance the construction of two new classrooms.
A similar bond election was defeated in May, Morocco points out but adds that voters at that time believed the district would be able to make use of an extra building belonging to Anaheim elementary system. Since the structure has been removed and Katella school faces a double-session for children of the first four grades, interested residents have revived the issue by a petition.
Minimum Wage Law for Women, Kids, Due Aug. 1
SACRAMENTO (CNS)—California's new minimum wage of 75 cents an hour for women and minors will go into effect Aug. 1, 1952, Paul Scharrenberg, director of industrials relations, announced today.
The revised rate is contained in new minimum wage orders for women and minors in all California industries except agriculture and domestic service. The orders were recently enacted by the industrial welfare commission, Scharrenberg said.
Scharrenberg noted that regulations apply to both manufacturing and mercantile employers have been combined, and listed the most important changes.

AROUND THE HORN
Inside, it is a different story. A story of the rosewood piano that was brought around the Horn for Anaheim's first white child born in the Mother Colony, the horsehair sofa and marble topped tables treasured by Anaheim pioneers, and the parasoled baby buggy so fashionable in the gay nineties.
The house was built on two levels with parlor and dining room across the front and kitchen and bedroom three steps down in the rear. The original redwood plank floors have stood the test of time well, having known the tread of such illustrious owners as Madam Helena Modjeska (for whom Helena Street was named), and Henryk Sienkiewicz, author of "Quo Vadis."
Papered walls make a pleasing background for the authentic antique furnishings, the heavily framed photographs of the first settlers, and the display of old-

Since it was to be a farm community, some method had to be used to protect the land frothers of cattle that roamed wath at that time. Hansen hit upon the idea of setting out willow trees at two foot intervals around the entire colony. Additional protection was given by a wide irrigation ditch. Soon 40,000 willows were sprouting to form solid living wall at what is now North, South, East and West streets.
So thick did the willow tree grow that a gate had to be established on each of the four sides and it is from one of these that the present Northgate business district takes its name.

Scharrenberg noted that regulations apply to both manufacturing and mercantile employers have been combined, and listed the most important changes.
They are:

2. Exemption of women executives from jurisdiction of the regulations if they receive $350 or more per month.
3. Minimum of 11 hours between employees' working days, and a maximum of 8 hours work per day, to be performed within a period of 13 hours.
4. Payment for half the usual day's work to women and minors required to report for less than half the usual day's work, in no case to be less than two hours' regular pay.
5. Recording of beginning and end of employee's meal period, as well as the day's in and out time.
6. Limitation of women and minors to 48-hour work week.

To encourage such qualities, as well as to trade tuning experiences and techniques, 249 men and one woman, all members of the National Association of Plano Tuners, are hobnobbing in Philadelphia this week.
"We're not so young, most of us, but young men don't seem to go in for piano tuning any more," mused Laban A. Nichols, one of the association officers.
"Too bad, too because ours is a good profession; pleasant surroundings, steady work, and, for the most part, an appreciative audience."
Here is the consensus on children:
"We like them and, despite what most mothers think, don't mind having them around when we're tuning an instrument. We forgive them for the chewing gum, gum drops, crayons, toys and assorted keepsakes they hide in the family piano."
Minors to 48-hour work week.

Hansen bought the original tract at two dollars per-acre. Each colonist put up a sum of money for its improvements and received his allotted portion by democratic fishbowl drawing. Those pieces farthest out were valued at $400 while those nearest the city center were valued at $1600 for the 20-acre strips.
Although only one of the original settlers was a farmer, the Mother Colony became the most important grape-growing area in California and the ploneers prospered. When a blight struck the vineyard in 1885, the Valenciennes orange replaced the grape as the principal cash crop.
PRESERVED BY D.A.R.
The Pioneer Home of the Mother Colony was George Hansen's own home, and has been preserved by the Daughters of the American Revolution. Originally it stood on North Los Angeles street between Chartres and Cypress. The building was given by E. E. Beazley, and its present site donated by Marie Horstman Dwyer in memory of her pioneering parents who purchased the land in 1860.
Mrs. John F. Kemper, present Curator of the Pioneer House, has delved extensively into Anselm's early history and so is well qualified to tell the intriguing story of this house and its times to the public.
Visiting hours are from two until four o'clock on Thursday and Sunday.

Now who ever heard of PLASTIC gas pipe?
1 YOUR GAS COMPANY IS USING IT...
Next time you see a crew installing a gas service connection, stop and look. Where an old gas line running from the house to the main needs replacement, you may see a crew inserting a new plastic pipe through the old gas pipe. Use of this flexible plastic tubing saves lawn, flowers and paving because digging is limited to two spots...one by the meter, one in the street.

2 ...IT IS PROVING ITSELF
DURABLE AND DEPENDABLE...
Plastic pipe was first used as a substitute for metal pipe back in 1945. Samplings of the plastic pipe in service over the years showed it in good operating condition and revealed no defects or mechanical weaknesses. There is good reason to believe that plastic pipe will last as long as metal pipe—or perhaps even longer, because plastic pipe is not affected by the corrosive action of soil. These are the reasons why we are making wider use of new materials each year.
3 ...IT PROVIDES FASTER,
MORE ECONOMICAL
Plastic pipe is light...easier to handle and install than metal pipe. It enables your Gas Company to provide new or replacement service to customers faster and at lower cost. It is one of the numerous ways in which we have offset some uptrends in costs. Improvements like this are extremely important to us because nearly all our costs—like yours—have risen steadily. Our taxes, our payrolls, the materials we need, Southern California far more than that’s why we approve of him with any increase gas will still be almost any budget. Gas is hold bargain.
