CENTER ST., ANAHEIM-PHONE 7283 Poultry and Egg Production Hits New State High SACRAMENTO. (CNS)—Farm production of poultry and eggs in California during 1951 reached a new high, according to a survey issued today by the California Crop and Livestock Reporting Service. Cash farm receipts from all poultry and eggs climbed to $265 million, almost 31 per cent higher than receipts in 1950. About half the increase in cash receipts, the report said, is attributable to higher levels of egg prices. The production of turkeys and fryers also set new records, with the turkey crop numbering 9,507,000 birds, nearly a third larger than in 1950, while the output of broiler and fryer birds totaled 39,452,000, an increase of 21 per cent. EGG PRODUCTION, the report said, declined two per cent in 1951, from a 1950 record, but still remained large in comparison with other years. The hatchery industry turned out 98 million chicks and 11 million turkey poults, both substantially, in excess of the previous year. The report said economic conditions during the year generally were favorable to the poultry producer, with the egg-feed price ration remaining higher. Prospects for 1952, the report indicated, were dimmed by falling prices for chickens and eggs and Safeway Stores Charge Collusive Price Fixing by Big Milk Firms SACRAMENTO. (CNS)—Once again, the big milk prices in California appear to be reaching high proportions, and once again, a large grocery store made charges before the bureau of milk control that formia distributors are depriving the public of low prices through adherence to the “no competition” of milk pricing now in vogue in the state. At bureau hearings in Oakland and San Francisco, where distributors are seeking an increase in prices, Safeway Stores, Inc., presented testimony charging that the present wholesale profit on a quart of milk is excessive. The chain claims the present price can be reduced to bring milk distributed through stores down to 20 cents a quart in both the bay cities. The Algmeda-Contra Costa area now pays 22 cents and San Francisco 22½ cents. THE SAFEWAY people contend that even under the present laws governing milk pricing, the bureau could permit lower prices in stores, and they charge that the director of agriculture has failed to utilize this method or type of distribution alone. In other words, people who buy at a store are under the present set-up being penalized by those who have milk delivered to the home. “The pricing system by which the director of agriculture lumps the costs of all methods of types of milk distribution in determining the prices consumers must pay for milk, denies the people price ratios were less favorable during the early months of 1952, although demands for chicks were the savings from low distribution and forces the high costs which sub-Hicent milk distribution to the testimony. At the hearing, the store representatives also charged that the bureau of milk control proposes to add 2½ cents per quart fictional costs to the expense of distributing concentrated milk. "We can only assume," the testimony said, "that the Bureau of Milk Control, in seeking to add this arbitrary figure, is proceeding on the theory that some other plant with higher costs than Safeway may sometime, and in some place, want to produce concentrated milk." THE BATTLE between Safeway and the large milk distributors of California, who spend thousands of dollars during legislative sessions on lobbying activities, has been going on for several years, with the result that the public has paid an enormous sum in additional milk costs through the failure of the state to permit competition in the milk industry. The store consistently has offered "when legally permitted to do so," to sell milk for a couple of cents lower price than the price fixed by the state. Neither prices to producers, nor profit to the groceryman would be affected if a lower price was authorized: "Safeway has long criticized the high wholesale profits which the bureau allows for processing and handling milk delivered to grocery stores," the testimony said. "The director of agriculture, by refusing to allow his bureau to pass on to consumers savings which results from the low costs of reasonably efficient processing and wholesaling, has failed to administer the law in the interest of producers and consumers."
