LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT IT— THERE WAG NO WALL PAPERING DONE FOR THE NEXT 30 MINUTES! PETERS GOT A COMPLETE REPORT ON THE HISTORY, GEOGRAPHY, GENERAL TOPOGRAPHY AND GEOLOGICAL MAKE-UP OF THE ENTIRE AREA TV-RADIOLOGIC Battle of Two Wits; Allen Versus Hawthorne By TOM E. DANSON HOLLYWOOD — Owlish-eyed comedian Hawthorne, who has been a West Coast radio and TV fixture for the past five years with a brand of humor that has catapulted him to a position among the top 10 personalities of the air waves, originating here, matches wits nightly this summer with the fellow he replaced at CBS Steve Allen. It's a battle of two wits that is shaping up on KNX, the West Coast's major CBS owned station, but probably only the Western half of the United States, will hear it. Here's what's gonna happen: Steve Allen is doing a show from New York each night at 9:30 p.m. EDT. That means it will be heard here at 6:30 p.m. The show is patterned after the show Steve once did at midnight on KNX, in the days before he got real good and moved to Gotham. Hawthorne, who was hired by CBS here to replace Allen on the midnight show, developed his own following with his version of the program. It so happens that Steve and Hawthorne are very much alike in style. Now, Hawthorne has his new show, heard each night at 9:30 p.m., patterned after the midnight show, and just three hours following Steve, which means that listeners will have an opportunity every night to here the two bespectacled co-members at each other. POLI-TIPS ... But the Republican Nation is going strong are well acquainted channels carrying the making event. How as a reminder, television in the mornings at KNXT, KNBH, KEC LA, and the same the evening. CL has been signed to play Jefferson in a Ford TV series . . . HERE'S MY EAR! BARRACUDA, CUT THE PHONE LINES! ALL RIGHT, BOY, GET LUMPIN! GOODBYE, EVERYONE! WHOS FLATTERED IN THE GUMS BE NOTICE!! HI, EDDIE! LUCY! MEET DIANA! GEE, HENRY—I NAS GORRY TO HEAR ABOUT YOU AND HELEN—BUT I'M SURE GLAD YOU WERE ABLE TO DIG UP ANOTHER DATE ON SUCH SHORT NOTICE! Now, Hawthorne has his new show, heard each night at 9:30 p.m., patterned after the midnight show, and just three hours following Steve, which means that listeners will have an opportunity every night to here the two bespectacled comics have at each other—and they promised this would happen—in, of course, the most friendly manner. The feud will gain a lot of interest, but will be fun for these two, who are very close friends. The East versus West battle of the two comedians who look alike, sound alike and act alike, is made especially unique in that both will be doing the same type of show, giving fans an opportunity for close comparison. Hawthorne thinks that Steve Allen has done very well in New York, but he prefers to stay here in Hollywood. "After all," he says with tongue in cheek, "Hollywood may not be much of a place to visit, but it's a wonderful place to live." DOWN TV-RADIO ROW . . . Have had many letters and phone calls after the story on Liberace, one in particular, I would like to bring to your attention.
