'Fearless Fagan'–MGM's Answer To 'Francis the Talking Mule'
By JAMES BACON
HOLLYWOOD, UP—Comes now MGM's answer to Francis the Talking Mule—Fearless Fagan, the Wandering Lion.
Unless Hollywood tradition reverses itself, that means you'll be seeing pictures with such titles as these:
"Fearless Fagan in Africa," "Fearless Fagan Takes a Mate" and, of course, "Son of Fearless Fagan."
There is no better, or more consistent, moneymaker in the business than a series picture with an animal star. Lassie, Rin Tin Tin and now Francis are top examples. Universal - International, the trade reports say, uses Francis to pay off the studio overhead.
MGM press-previewed "Fearless Fagan" the other day and introduced Pfc. Floyd Humeston, the real life owner of Fagan. Although Carleton Carpenter and Janet Leigh were co-starred, it was Fagan's picture. One critic quipped that he would give it a "four roar" rating. Another called Fagan the movie's best grunter since the late Wallace Beery.
The surest sign that the studio is going to give Fagan the build-up is the news that Sidney Franklin Jr., has been upped to producer status.
Young Franklin, until Fagan came along, had only been an assistant to producer Gottfried Reinhardt.
But about a year ago, Franklin read the headlines about Humeston and his wandering lion. The army had drafted Hume-that, although Fagan pounds of bonafide lion, how acts like an overgrown ten around Humeston. That raised the beast from the was four days old. He spery furlough away from with Fagan.
MGM paid Franklin a fifth $10,000 for the Fearless gan story. They split it ways with Humeston and considered the money of importance. The fact that has good home at MGM really important.
"The very least I could that lion is give it a good says Franklin. "Look wh done for me. He only n pounds of horsemeat a da other MGM star work cheap?"

The army had drafted Humeston and he insisted upon carting Fagan off to Fort Ord with him in direct violation of Army regulations.
The story grew as Fagan was shipped (via Flying Tiger airline) to Columbus, Ohio, and back to Venice, Calif.
That's where Franklin found Humeston. He says the young soldier admitted he was toying with the idea of going over the hill with Fagan unless he could find a good home for the beast.
Franklin piled Humeston and Fagan into his car and took off. With the help of writer Eldon W. Griffiths, the fearless Fagan story was practically written on the spot.
"I'll never forget that ride," Humeston recalls. "People would do the silliest double takes when we'd stop at a signal light and they'd spot old Fagan sitting there in the back seat."
"We even had more fun than that," Franklin added. "We showed up at a cocktail party that night with Fagan on a leash. Quite a sensation, even for Hollywood."
It had better be explained here
