Everybody Likes Virginia’s Looks Except, Perhaps, Virginia Mayo
By JAMES BACON
(For Vacationing Bob Thomas)
HOLLYWOOD. (UP)—True, everybody in Hollywood wants to be someone else—actors wish they were directors; directors wish they were producers and so on.
But when Virginia Mayo says she wants to look like someone else, let’s face it. That’s carrying dissatisfaction too far!
I learned this bit of intelligence after seeing Virginia in “She’s Working Her Way Through College” in which she plays Hot Garters Gerie, a burlesque stripper. This picture accents a well-known Hollywood fact, to wit:
Virginia Mayo is the possessor of the movies’ most beautiful body. And she’s got the face to go with it.
For one thing the makeup departments at Warners and other studios reveal that she needs only powder and rouge to look her best before the cameras. That’s something that can’t be said of all glamour girls in this town.
Armed with all these facts and figures, I asked Virginia what she thought of cheesecake.
“I like it very much,” she replied unsmilingly. “It tastes real good.”
“I don’t mean that kind of cheesecake.”
“Oh,” she smiled. “You mean the other kind—leg art. Frankly, I don’t mind posing for it, but I don’t enjoy seeing cheesecake or any other kind of pictures where I look like me. I like pictures of myself where I look like someone else, preferably, Vivien Leigh.”
great actress. And the studio gives me enough versatility in my roles so I can try; but basically, I’m a song and dance girl. That’s all Betty Grable does and look where she rates in this business.”
The mention of Betty Grable momentarily stunned me. I started thinking how Betty would like reading that Virginia Mayo has the best figure in Hollywood. But then it’s a well known fact around town that Betty reads only the racing form.
But Marilyn Monroe? There’s a girl who reads everything. And Joe Di Maggio is her boy friend.
This job of writing about Hollywood glamour can be hazardous.
JOW Head Addresses Stanton C of C Meeting
In response to a letter sent out by President Carbon C. Dubbs, a large group of members and Stanton residents attended the meeting Tuesday night at the Dubbs plant on Katella and Western ave.
Nelson Launer of Anaheim, superintendent of the Joint Outfall Sewer, opened the session by telling how the proposed sewer system would affect the Stanton area and what their sanitation condition would be.
A motion to incorporate the chamber to protect the members and to take advantage of using the band privileges was carried circulated to call for property owners within the properties boundaries calling for a special election on the proposed sewer and water system under County Water Act, as drawn by the office of J.R. Lester Bee engineer from Santa Ana. Sanitation directors will also voted on at the same election.
A discussion of the constitution of 250 homes on Chester Ave., and Hwy. 39, by the L.L. Mansion Homes of Los Angeles followed. The chamber had

NOW MISS LEIGH is a beauty and undoubtedly one of the world's greatest actresses but one will get you 10 that she would gladly trade the Oscar she won last March if she could look like Virginia in a bathing suit. Or play Hot Garters Gertle.
I asked Virginia if this business of wanting to look like Miss Leigh harbored a secret yearning to be a great dramatic actress.
"Naturally, I'd like to be a Successor to Sam Collins Under Way
SACRAMENTO. (CNS). — A quiet campaign to install Assemblyman Robert Kirkwood of Santa Clara county, as speaker of the assembly at the 1953 session, to succeed the retired Speaker Sam Collins of Orange county, who ran for the state senate and was defeated on two tickets, is under way at the present time.
Whether Kirkwood, a Saratoga farmer, will be chosen or not, still remains a question, as the speakability race is one which is enlivened by a great many "would-be" as the Collins regime draws to a close.
Nelson Launer of Anaheim, superintendent of the Joint Outfall Sewer, opened the session by telling how the proposed sewer system would affect the Stanton area and what their sanitation condition would be.
A motion to incorporate the chamber to protect the members and to take advantage of using the band privileges was carried unanimously. William C. Poe, Jr., attorney from Los Alamitos, has been instructed to draw up the articles of incorporation which will be approved by the State in about three weeks.
The by-laws of the Stanton chamber are being studied and will be changed to follow an outline similar to those set by the Los Alamitos chamber.
Herman Thompson was named as drainage chairman, assisted by Moreland William Schuman, to work with the county on flood conditions that should be improved within the chamber's zone of influence.
A letter is being sent the Junior High school committee asking what progress is being made to locate the proposed Junior High on the Havenor property, Orange and S. Western ave. To date, it was stated that an option had been taken but no money had been deposited.
G. W. Irwin reported the temporary fire station is nearing completion and a group of volunteers signed up to put on the interior wall board Wednesday night, headed by Carl M. Jameson. The siren is already on hand.
Four petitions are now being election on the proposed sewer and water system under County Water Act, as drawn by the office of J.R. Lester Benson engineer from Santa Ana. Sanitation directors will also voted on at the same election.
A discussion of the constitution of 250 homes on Chester Ave., and Hwy. 39, by the L.Mansion Homes of Los Angeles followed. The chamber had ready gone on record as favouring this subdivision along with their endorsement of light dustry and modest housing. Jameson spoke for the group poultrymen located near Western and Katella ave., said that although he could why the businessmen want more homes he thought divisions should be located in towns where facilities were available and leave the outlying areas for the poultrymen who at present were the second largest moneymakers in the county.
Opposition that has been voted In Hynes Estates, saying Little Mansions would lower valuation of their homes, fails to appear so no definite action was taken to change the chamber's original endorsement.
Dubbs stated speakers from the County Sanitation District would be slated for the next meeting, from the office of engineer and general manager.*

Senate Sub Committee to Probe Treasury Dept. for Communism
WASHINGTON. (P) — Chairman McCarran (D-Nev.) said today the senate internal security subcommittee may investigate possible Communist infiltration of the treasury department and other government fiscal agencies.
The group's 18-month probe of the Institute of Pacific Relations (IRP). McCarran said, brought out evidence of communist penetration of the treasury department during the war.
McCarran said he did not know how far it had gone but declared his subcommittee "may go into the situation" unless some other group undertakes an investigation.
The internal security unit turned in a report to the senate yesterday charging that Communists and pro-Communists took control of the IPR and influenced U. S. policies in the far east.
The report accused Owen Latimore of intentionally serving Communist causes, and of lying to the committee on at least five points.
It recommended perjury action against Lattimore, a far eastern affairs specialist and Johns Hopkins university professor, and John P. Davies, Jr., a state department official.
Lattimore promptly said the accusations were untrue and the call for perjury action "fantastic." Davies, now deputy director of political affairs for the U.S. at Bonn, said in Germany that he "certainly" denied the perjury allegations.
McCarran said the recommendations to investigate the treasury and other money handling White, former undersecretary of the treasury, and Solomon Adler, another former treasury department official, with a wartime Soviet espionage ring here.
