Fulkerson, test flight engineer, sits behind him.

Ruth Elder, first woman to attempt a trans-Atlantic flight, will be Grand Marshal for the 48th Annual Orange County 4th of July Parade to be held in Huntington Beach, in keeping with the parade theme, "Pageant of American Heroines."
Miss Elder attempted her famous flight on Oct. 11, 1927, taking off in her plane, the "American Girl." She and her copilot navigator, George W. Haldeman, narrowly escaped death when her plane crashed at sea, due to a broken oil line, exploded and burned. Even though they were three and one-half hours from their destination, Paris, they had set the longest distance over water record. Following their crash they were rescued by the Dutch oil tanker, SS Barendrecht and landed at the Azores. They broke all existing speed records when they flew into Paris from Bayonne in the French "Potez" sent from Paris for their use.

State to Operate On $1,200,000,000 Budget This Year
SACRAMENTO. (CNS) — The state of California today starts to spend $1,200,000,000—the amount of the 1952-53 fiscal year budget adopted by the 1952 legislature.
Largest budget in the history of the state, the billion, two hundred million represents the price of the operating cost of government, capital outlay, and subventions to local governments including schools.
An additional $23,000,000 will be added to the multi-million dollar annual contribution the state makes to the school, which this year amounted to $270 million before the legislature at the request of the California Teachers association, voted the additional $23 million. The association had requested $60 million.
The additional money will assure each school district, with only rare exceptions, an additional $5 for each pupil in average daily attendance in kindergarten through junior college, according to officials of the state department of education. Many districts will use the additional money to raise teachers salaries, and such raises already are included in school district budgets.

Premier Forms New Egyptian Cabinet
ALEXANDER, EGYPT. — Fornier Premier Hussein Sirry Pasha formed a new non-party cabinet today. It will be sworn in at the palace this afternoon.
Sources close to the veteran independent politician said King FYarouk will issue royal decrees appointing Sirry Pasha and a 13-man cabinet to succeed the government of Ahmed Naguib Hilaly Pasha.
Hilaly Pasha resigned Saturday after four months in office.
Informants said the new cabinet did not include dynamic young Ahmed Mortada el Maraghy Pasha, who had been interior and army-navy minister in the two previous independent cabinets which have governed Egypt since the king ousted the Wafdist party government last January.
Earlier reports said Sirry Pasha had been unable to form a government because El Maraghy Pasha insisted on retaining the interior ministry, which controls the police.
In the cabinet lineup reported today, Sirry Pasha named his son-in-law, Mohamed Mashem Pasha, as interior minister and kept for himself three jobs—premier, foreign minister and army and navy minister.
Highway Patrolmen Anticipate Record Traffic on Fourth
Strike of Radio Writers Expected To Disrupt Convention Coverage
NEW YORK, U.S. — The Independent Radio Writers guild called a strike today against three major networks. The guild said the walkout would disrupt broadcast coverage of the Republican and Democratic conventions in Chicago.
However, all three networks—National Broadcasting Co., Columbia Broadcasting system, and American Broadcasting Co. — said their news programs would not be interrupted.
The union said television news also would be affected with TV writers refusing to cross their radio colleagues' picket lines. The contract dispute does not involve directly TV news.
Soon after the midnight strike call, pickets appeared outside NBC studios in Rockefeller Center. Some writers were reported out at CBS, and the guild said writers for the other networks would join the networks today.
All three networks said supervisory personnel would bolster the staffs and that all scheduled programs, both network and local, would be aired.
Graham Grove, head of the guild's negotiators, said initial picketing would be in New York and Chicago. He said the west coast would not be affected immediately.
Grove said the strike was "go-ering opens next week."
One hundred guild members prepared to go to Growe picket duty, Grove said 40 pickets there.
The dispute here is directly 67 staff newswriters' guild, which belongs to Authors' League of Artists. The walkout would be all its 1200 members try. They include dramatic and free-lance well as the staff newsmen.

Highway Patrolmen Anticipate Record Traffic on Fourth
SACRAMENT. (INS)—The California highway patrol would rather not have anything to do with you over the Fourth of July weekend, Clifford E. Peterson, patrol commissioner, declared today.
Anticipating record traffic volume during the holiday weekend, the patrol will stage traffic checks at strategic points in an effort to weed out drunk drivers and unsafe vehicles, Peterson said. Every available patrolman will be on duty.
Officers don't enjoy writing tickets, but pulling broken bodies from shattered wrecks is even less enjoyable, Peterson added.
"If you're not interested in either of our services — over the Fourth or any other time—then drive carefully," he advised.
quency rate is increasing proportionately to the increased traffic flow.
That means something to every motorist and every car owner.
It is reflected by the ever increasing cost of his insurance. Consequently every accident in Orange county and those in the metropolitan area cost you money if you own a car.
Traffic safety is something that cannot be taken lightly, friend. Won't you do your part?

BELL GARDENS. (AP)—An heroic but mistaken effort to save his two younger sisters from their burning house resulted in critical burns today for a 15-year-old boy.
The boy, Bradley Owen, was taken to Maywood hospital with third degree burns over his body.
Unknown to Bradly, his sisters had made their way to safety. The boy was found unconscious in the living room. "Apparently he had saved himself, but then couldn't find his two sisters and believed they were trapped inside," said the father, Milton Owen, 42.
