Davies Bakery Beats Cypress Bv 2-0 Score Last night in a single game at La Palma park, Davies Bakery edged Cypress Merchants 2-0. Art Altheide the bakery pitcher threw a brilliant two hitter, and in doing so struck out 14 Cypress batsmen. Del Martens, Davies third baseman, led his team at the plate with two hits in three trips to the plate. Del also drove in one run and scored the other on Dale Woleim's first inning single. In the first inning hits by Marvin Fluegge, Martens and Wolein accounted for all of the Davies runs. Tom Ritchie the Merchant pitcher pitched four hit ball in losing. Ritchie let up only one hit after the first inning. Johnny Borgus and Dick Gulman got the only hits for the Cypressmen. The only time the Merchants seemed to threaten was in the sixth inning when with one out Borgus walked, Gulman followed with a double, putting men on second and third, but Altheide then proceeded to get the next batters on strike outs. For Health, Lat California Fruit It’s the Field Against Stars, Take on Oakland By The Associated Press Hollywood looked like a safe bet today to hold onto first place in the Pacific Coast League as it heads north to tackle third place Oakland. The Stars are three games ahead of second place San Diego, but they don’t expect an easy time with the Oaks. The Oaks have been coming fast and looked strong last week in swamping seventh place San Francisco five games to one. The best Hollywood could do was to take a 4-3 edge over fourth place Los Angeles. But the Stars’ three game margin gives them plenty of room to move around in. San Diego hopes to pick up some ground on the Stars at Portland. The Beavers are sixth. With some luck, the Padres might gain on the league leaders. Portland was only able to take a 4-3 edge over Sacramento last week. Los Angeles, which looked good at times against the Stars, takes on weak San Francisco. STANDINGS By The Associated Press Pacific Coast League W. La.
