Divorcee Convicted of $1,500,000 Reno 'Theft' in 'Bedroom Bargain'
CARSON CITY, NEV. OP—The French divorcee who pleaded that she made a bedroom bargain with millionaire La Vere Redfield to steal his $1,500,000 safe today faced five to 10 years in prison for directing that fantastic burglary.
A federal court jury yesterday found Mrs. Jeanne D'Are Michaud, 38, guilty of carrying more than $147,000 of the loot across state lines.
The jury rejected the petite, dark-haired woman's contention that she gained Redfield's consent to the theft* in a bedroom tryst at the millionaire's gloomy Reno mansion Dec. 28.
A special suicide watch was put over the Canadian divorcee. She previously attempted suicide and said on the witness stand:
"It is preferable to this shame of bringing out my private life as La Vere Redfield's sweetheart."
Redfield denied in court he consented to the theft, but was so hesitant and evasive that Federal Judge Foley's temper flared at the blue-jeaned financier.
An amazing new touch to the case that will go down in FBI files as one of the strangest in history came yesterday with this revelation: Redfield still has 270,-000 silver dollars cached in a secret basement room of his field stone residence.
The 270,000 cartwheels, which weigh almost 10 tons, were discovered by FBI agents, acting upon coded instructions found in a note taken from Mrs. Michaud upon her arrest.
The note, with a will and other personal papers, was among the currency, jewels and securities choked into the millionaire's small bedroom safe when it was carted away Feb. 29.
FBI men chiseled through 39 inches of plaster, stone and concrete to find the secret room, which also contained a vast quantity of postage stamps.
Many of the silver dollars and stamps are believed to be collectors items worth considerably more than face value.
Mrs. Michaud, who will be sentenced June 30, freely admitted masterminding the rich burglary, saying she offered a 50 per cent split to Anthony Gazzigli, 41, former Reno gambling casino employee, to arrange the job.

Mother Who Killed 4-Year-Old Ruled As Sane by Court
SANTA MONICA (UP)—"I think it's the saddest case this court has ever had to decide," said Veran Superior Judge Harry Borde in ruling that a young mother was sane when she killed her 4-month-old son.
Mrs. Carmel Ann Baer, 28, was said after she shot her child in guess I won't sleep again until I dead," had pleaded guilty to manslaughter charge.
Testimony at her sanity hearing yesterday indicated that although she was under great stress—because her husband told her he planned to take their oldest son and file for divorce—the knew that what she was doing was wrong.
Dr. Marcus Graham, one of six psychiatrists who testified, said Mrs. Baer was motivated in part by a conviction that her Indian ancestry would handicap her son.
A mandatory prison sentence will be imposed July 21.

Water Shortages Hold No Fear for Orange Countians
SACRAMENTO (CNS)—Orange countians, even if confronted by a shortage of water, aren't likely to go thirsty, for there are 43,994 places in the state where alcoholic beverages can be purchased.
This announcement was made today by the state board of equalization, which completed a count of premises as of April 1, 1952, showing that Orange county has 667 within its confines.
The premises, the board said, do not reflect the total licenses issued, as one premise might have several different types of licenses. Consequently, premises includes both on sale bars, and retail package stores, as well as the corner grocery, hotels, clubs and other establishments where liquor can be purchased.

RESPIRATION REVIVES PUPPY
SAN GABRIEL (P)—Artificial respiration brought life to Chihuahua puppy which apparently had been born dead.
Mrs. Albert Webb began working on the 2¼-ounce pup immediately after it was born to her pet, Onyx. After a half-hour the tiny female puppy began to breath. Today she is getting alone fine, together with two active brothers.
Some primitive peoples kill all twins as soon as they are born because they represent bad luck while others honor them as representing good luck.
