(AP)—A House appropriations subcommittee has approved less than half the funds requested for a vast atomic expansion program designed to produce a "complete family" of nuclear weapons. But Rep. Gore (D-Tenn.), a committee member, told a reporter the $1,450,000,000 granted would permit the atomic energy commission (AEC) to go ahead with its full program. Commenting on the $3,191,000,000 requested for the fiscal year starting July 1, Gore said the AEC frequently has overestimated its costs as much as 100 per cent. He said the committee felt the lesser amount would permit the program to be started and the AEC could come back next January and ask for more money if needed. Gore said the subcommittee—in actions yesterday—also approved all of a $150-million-dollar request for the Tennessee Valley authority (TVA) to construct steam-electric power plants to support the atomic program. LA Chamber Sees 5,600,000 as 1960 Population LOS ANGELES. (AP)—The Los Angeles chamber of commerce sees a 5,600,000 population for Los Angeles county by 1960. The chamber figures that 8,000 new persons will come into the county each month and 4,000 more births than deaths will swell the figures to that total. The 1950 census count was 4,151,687. The committee said today that the net immigration figure is 540 a month less than the 1940-50 MODEST MAIDENS Trademark Registered U.S. Patent Office Angeles chamber of commerce sees a 5,600,000 population for Los Angeles county by 1960. The chamber figures that 8,000 new persons will come into the county each month and 4,000 more births than deaths will swell the figures to that total. The 1950 census count was 4,151,687. The committee said today that the net immigration figure is 540 a month less than the 1940-50 figure, and the birth excess of death totals reflect an increase over the 2,840 monthly averages during the same decade. It forecast a 32.4 per cent increase in California's population during the 1950-60 period, to a total of 14 million. Delano Man Says He Killed 4 Men—'Just for Fun' RENO, Nev. —A one-armed Delano, Calif., man who police said "killed for the fun of killing" was being held here today on a murder charge. Police Lieut. Vernon Temple identified him as George Gonzalas, 27, of Delano. Temple said Gonzalas in a statement admitted four killings in the past 12 years. He was bopked for bludgeoning to death Russell Monroe Utterfield, 54, in a Truckee river "jungle" near downtown Reno yesterday. Gonzalas was quoted as saying he beat to death three others with rocks or his fist. Twenty tons of soap may lubricate the ways when a battleship is launched.
