DANSON HOLLYWOOD — Barbara Logan's love for strange animals has launched the radiant, sparkling 19-year-old singing star of N.B.C.'s "Johnny Dugan TV Show" on one of her two favorite vocations: Taming and training lions (not to mention the taming of wolves which has become necessary because of the gal's beauty), and her singing and acting. This lion taming business with Barbara started one day five years ago, when she was only 14, during a visit to the World Jungle Compound with her mother. Their long-time friend, Mel Koontz, head trainer at the Compound, showed Barbara a 6-week-old cub whose mother refused to feed it. Barbara offered to take the cub home and care for it, but nine months later, she was forced to return the now large and powerful animal to the Compound. At this time a picture was being filmed at the Compound, and Koontz was in the process of training two girls as doubles for the feminine leads in the film, "Caged Fury," Barbara's interest found her work with these trainees. For pictures, lions work on whip cues," she said. "When the whip is down, they charge at you... when the whip is up, they back away." She studied 18 months under Koontz, practicing with everything before a presidency, will be heard over KECA at 7:30. Reporter Null Adams Koontz was in the process of training two girls as doubles for the feminine leads in the film "Caged Fury," Barbara's interest found her work with these trainees. "For pictures, lions work on whip cues," she said. "When the whip is down, they charge at you ... when the whip is up, they back away." She studied 18 months under Koontz, practicing with everything from a black panther to a tiger and a group of lions. Barbara's singing and acting career came first, however, and she dropped the risky business. She is now content to keep busy with her featured spot on Johnny Dugan's TV show, work in movies, radio, musical comedies on stage, and pursue her hobbies of painting (water colors and pastel chalks), riding and ice skating. Unlike most career girls, she admits that one day she hopes to raise a family. "But I do like television," she's quick to add. "It's a combination of stage and screen... however, I'd like to continue doing TV shows even after I'm married." Some day, too, she hopes to learn to fence. "It gives a girl poise and grace." Actually, the pert green-eyed brunette is the picture of poise and charm. "I can handle lions," Barbara admits modestly. "But during my last year in high school (that was two years ago) I had reason to begin worrying about handling wolves... so I studied judo. (The 5 foot, 3 inch, 108-pound Barbara has thrown a 180-pound man.) Judo's good to know," she concluded, "as it comes in handy" TODAY'S CROSS-WORD PUZZLE HORIZONTAL 1 Scorch 5 Gold coin of ancient Persia Part 14 Robust 15 Refrain 16 River in England 17 Indigo 18 Sedate 19 Copper 20 Expressed contempt 22 Become manifest 24 Podder trough 25 Dilatory 28 In any case 29 Masculine name 32 Gown of the Muses 35 The oat grasses 36 Trap 37 Mislay 38 Publish books 39 Marksman 40 Bowline genus 41 Ground malt 42 Fragrant gum used in incense 43 Fruit drink 44 Girl's name 45 Part of a train 46 Harvested 48 Chaplet VERTICAL 1 Yawning abyss 2 Gulana pheasant 3 Stranger 4 Consign 5 Abandon 6 Destitute of pelvic fine 7 Fruit sirup 8 Flash 9 Shroud 10 Athletic contests 11 Negligence Yesterday's Puzzle Solved: ATONE PIANO AGOONIC ARROBA OK ATTAR ROMAXINE AREB SURD PALETTE REION AM RXATA DOLE SOB AOORA MOA MEAF MOIL OR ABBEES STEAMS AERIX ESSAY Crave Grafted Divorce center Star in Cetus Corrected Circumstance Uproar In opposition Island of exile Cross Positive Spring up Offer of marriage Coast town Florida Sleepfried's sword Hindustani (Persianized form) Important branch of the Tal race Role of the fox River in Can, Asia Realm of Pluto
