Frankie Laine Technique Explained
Trout Lakes Filmed for Television
By TOM E. DANSON
HOLLYWOOD—I sat for a good half-hour after the final number by Frankie Laine last week at his opening in the Coconut Grove, trying to figure out just what the guy had that seems to send so many people off, the beam. His technique, which is very rhythmic and bouncy, does not boast of a well trained voice, but more of a shouting quality, coming from a pair of case hardened tonsils—yet, a packed house applauded for more and more... that is, everyone but his lovely wife, Nan Grey, who evidently hears him day and night—for she failed to register applause at any one time.
Frankie, at one time tried the smooth-ballad type of singing, but just couldn't put this style over. He floated from one job to another, working for room rent or a handout of food, which ever he needed most at the time, still without any degree of success at all. During this time, he was evicted from 11 New York hotels for not paying his bills, and once, during this period, he dined on penny chocolate bars, with a park pench for a table, for three days.
Laine's shouting certainly has paid off, for when he changed his style, he was offered the chance to record one record for which he was paid $40. This platter seemed to show promise, and he next recorded "That's My Desire." Now here's the pay-off for Frank

Laine's shouting certainly has paid off, for when he changed his style, he was offered the chance to record one record for which he was paid $40. This platter seemed to show promise, and he next recorded "That's My Desire."
Now here's the pay-off for Frank Paul LoVecchio, who changed his name to Laine for obvious reasons—six months and 1,000,000 pressings of "Desires" later, Frankie's nightclub salary jumped from $75 to $750 a week and he banked a royalty check for $36,000. He now takes in about $300,000 a year...and that's will worth shouting about!
The filming of Shelly Flier's Hollywood Trout Lakes, located at the Sportsmans Lodge on Ventura Boulevard, it is hoped, will soon be seen n television as a series designed to instruct the young angler in the art of hooking Mr. Trout.
After dropping in for a visit recently, I was amazed to discover a beautiful series of lakes, complete with shore line, waterfalls, bridges and ducks.
Even more amazing was the large group of small kids with their parents, fishing for trout—and catching them.
Next Saturday and Sunday, Shelly is featuring a special Father's Day wishing derby where fathers and sons will angle for some swell prizes, and the young'uns will get special instruction in this great sport.

OLD-CAR HOBBY THRIVING
PASADENA, Calif., (P) — San Gabriel Valley's Horseless Carriage Club has revived the old game of scavenger hunting.
Members think nothing of traveling hundreds of miles in hopes of getting a pair of nickel door handles for a 1926 Packard or a rumble seat lid for a 1906 Buick.
Those in possession of old car parts can swap them for something that goes on an early model they're reconstructing.
Wives of the horseless carriage men conduct their own scavenger game. They comb attics and auction sales for celluloid collars, old style shoes and picture hats to complete old-time wardrobes. Then, when they go out for an outing in their horseless carriages they can dress the part.
Corn culture in pre-Columbian times spread over most of the western hemisphere where the corn plant would grow.
