The Family. Cold War Ties Up Berlin Cemeteries BERLIN (UP) — The East-West cold war has invaded Berlin's cemeteries. Most of Berlin's newer burying grounds were laid out on the city's outskirts so they are now in the Russian zone. This means that if a West Berliner owns a burial plot there and wants to bury a relative he can't do it because of communist-imposed travel restrictions. Nor can West Berliners go to decorate the graves of their dead. Some tearful women have appealed to the city authorities to have their dead exhumed and brought to western soil.
