State Park and Beach Adequacy Studied as Restrictions Applied
By HENRY C. MacArthur
SACRAMENTO (CNS)—Once again as the summer vacation son rolls around, the question of the adequacy of California parks and beaches arises. Adequacy primarily is not the area of state parks, but their facilities to take care of a vacation seek public which has paid taxes for a beaches and parks system, therefore is entitled to a little space for camping.
In six of the most popular state parks in the system, the park commission has established a ten-day camping limit, and thus for the first time is restricting the camper to less than two weeks of pleasure in the mountain and beach area.
In making the announcement for the new limitation, Newton B. Drury, chief of the state division of beaches and parks, brings up the old quarrel between at least a portion of the public and the state park commission.
"We have to be careful," says Drury, "not to crowd our developments to such an extent that the natural attractiveness of the parks is lost. This would destroy the original purpose.
THE STATE PARK commission has interpreted the legislative action providing for the beaches and parks system as meaning that the "natural" condition of the state park should remain about as it was when taken over by the state. This results in many acres of space which could be devoted to camping by the vacation seeking public, being left strictly to nature.
Particularly is this true in the D. L. Bliss State park in El Dorado county. Bliss is one of the few public spots on Lake Tahoe where the public can camp for a small fee, and not be forced to pay tribute to the Tahoe residents, very few of which provide camping grounds.
Yet at the last report, the acre state park was equipped with only 118 camp sites. It was placed on the list of the parks with a day limit, and this means only 118 families can cafp at time on the 957 acres of land.
IT MUST BE admitted, ever, that the division of beaches and parks, while restricting length of time to camp, is better than it did in providing space. It has 35 more camp sites this summer than it had a year ago. In addition, the legislation approved $5100 for new campsites, which may provide sufficient funds for about 20 more.
On the other hand, the division secured $11,850 from the legislation for the erection of a "combination building." While houses rest rooms, laundry showers, a necessity in any city where large nufbers of people congregated. Why such a building however, should cost $11,850 not been explained, but the division apparently thinks in pli terms.

Necciai Continues Strikeout Parade
GRAHAM, N.C. (P)—Ron Necciai tried to control an embarrassed grin and allowed, "the batters in this league are going to make it awful tough on me."
The Pittsburgh Pirates' 19-year-old strikeout sensation had just finished fanning 14 batters in his first starting assignment here last night for Burlington-Graham of the Class B Carolina league. Burlington-Graham beat Winston-Salem, 5-1, on Necciai's six-hit performance.
A 6:5 righthander, Necciai won national fame earlier this season when he struck out 27 in a non-hitter for the Bristol Twins of the Class D Appalachian league. After that, the Pirates looked him over during a brief stay at Pittsburgh and then jumped him to Class B.
"The Class B boys have much better batting eyes," Necciai said after last night's game. "I was just out there trying to throw

Judicial contests throughout the county resulted in a November runoff for Santa Ana-Orange Municipal Court judge by City Judge Ronald M. Crookshank and Justice Howard Cameron, both of Santa Ana; a run-off between Justice Donald J. Dodge of Costa Mesa and Lawyer A. K. Phelps of Corona Del Mar, who ran a tight race in Newport Beach justice court district; a run-off between City Judge Celia W. Young of Huntington Beach, who held a comfortable lead over Justice Elmer H. Hughes of Seal Beach, while Justice C. P. Pann of Huntington Beach was eliminated; and election of Justice C. C. Cravath of Laguna Beach over two opponents in the Laguna Beach-San Clemente justice court district.
