CATHOLIC CONGRESS Opens Spain's Second City
BARCELONA, Spain (P) — The purple-robed cardinals, archbishops in violet and pilgrims from all over the world gathered in this ancient city to pray for peace at the opening today of the 35th International Catholic Eucharistic Congress.
The Congress—first in 14 years—was to open officially with the arrival this afternoon of Pope Plus' representative, Federico Cardinal Tedeschini. Already a half million visiting faithful jammed Barcelona.
Tedeschini was to inaugurate the congress — first held in Lille in 1881 — with the singing tonight of the Veni Creator in Barcelona's cathedral. The official program concludes Monday.
Foreign Minister Albert Martin Artajo and all of Spain's top government leaders except Generalissimo Francisco Franco were to greet Tedeschini on his arrival. Franco plans to make a triumphal entry into Barcelona harbor Thursday aboard the cruiser Miguel de Cervantes.
Francis Cardinal Spellman, Archbishop of New York, received an ovation last night when he flew into Barcelona airport. He appeared tired from a quick flight back home — after already reaching Europe — because of an aunt's death.
Highway Patrol Asks Careful Holiday Driving
Motorists were asked today by the California Highway Patrol to place double emphasis on the coming Memorial Day weekend by staying alive while they honor those who died in battle.
Roads will be jammed with a record number of cars for the traditional start of the summer vacation period and the Patrol officials warned that danger from accidents would rise sharply.
Last Memorial Day, which fell in midweek, 14 persons died and 187 were injured in California in rural accidents alone. Because the three-day span this year will permit longer trips, the dead and injured toll could jump three times that high.
An attitude of "I want to stay alive" was described as the best way to ward off accidents. "We rarely have to deal with a thoroughly safety-minded driver," Patrol officials said.
Sacramento headquarters of the Patrol reported many local squads were planning traffic checks over the weekend.
"We don't want to spoil your holiday," said Patrol Commissioner Clifford E. Peterson, "but we'd rather take a few minutes of your time and weed out dangerous drivers who could spoil your life."
COINCIDENT WITHANCE of the company's ther statement, General E. nounced that, Northrop cupied virtually all of its built manufacturing facade Hawthorne, and that the ly-completed final assembly, containing 153,000 feet, is fully geared and gun to turn out Scorpion weather interceptors for Air Force. McGranery Takes Attorney General Position Today
WASHINGTON, (AP) — James Patrick McGranery moves into the hot seat of attorney general today.
Ceremonies making him the nation's 61st attorney general were scheduled for 10 a.m. (EST), with Chief Justice Vinson giving the oath of office.
McGranery takes over at a time when the Justice department is being investigated by a House committee headed by Rep. Chef (D-Ky.) and is under frequent attacks both in and out of Congress.
McGranery, 56, gave up a federal judgeship in Philadelphia to take the job. His new post pays better — $22,500 compared with $15,000 — but its future is less certain. Federal judges are appointed for life. The attorney general serves at the pleasure of the president and President Truman is not running for re-election.
