Flip of the Coin Changes
Actor's Name to Conway
By TOM E. DANSON
HOLLYWOOD — Tom Conway,
well known in motion pictures
for his "Falcon" series, and in radio
and television for "The Saint"
and "Mystery Theater," the latter
on ABC network, changed his
name by a flip of a coin with his
brother George Sanders. In order
to eliminate the confusion caused
by the similarity of names, voices
and appearances. Tom, the elder
of the brothers lost, and so he
dropped "Sanders" and assumed
the family surname of "Conway."
Tom, who was educated in private schools and Brighton college
in England, worked with a safety glass concern there, enjoying a bonanza of sales after an English law was passed that all automobiles must be equipped with this glass in the front and rear windows. It was while working at this job, that Tom was approached by a friend, requesting him to fill a part in a private club play which he accepted.
"Right then and there, the theater 'bug' got into me," he told me,
"and from then on, I just wasn't interested in anything else."
During his appearance in the private club play, Tom was given an offer to become associated with one of England's leading repertory theaters for pay of two pounds, 10 shillings a week, which, after several weeks of considering, he accepted.
When asked where he went from there, Conway replied: "From her from linking a TV with Frank Sinatra for tissue sponsor.

During his appearance in the private club play, Tom was given an offer to become associated with one of England's leading repertory theaters for pay of two pounds, 10 shillings a week, which, after several weeks of considering, he accepted.
When asked where he went from there, Conway replied: "From there, I started getting jobs."
Tom was asked to give his thoughts on television from three angles—the viewer, the performer and the critical angle, and after a very short pause started with the viewer. "I like it because it actually brings motion pictures into the home—but it cannot take the place of the movies for these big musicals and extravaganzas. As to the performer angle, we're still making motion pictures, slightly adjusted for a smaller screen, and regardless of what people say...it's still just motion pictures adjusted. Now, as to the critic," he concluded, "it is difficult to criticize at the moment. I like TV immensely, but it has a long way to go yet."

The dramatic story of the search scientists will be in the exciting escapist "Escape With Me" from at 8:30.
