Anaheim Union High school students Thursday held a nominating convention in miniature when, at a regular assembly, they selected the students from whom 1952-53 student and class officers will be elected. Primary elections will be held all day next Tuesday with general elections scheduled for May 20. According to Paul Demaree, principal, the students turn out in far greater proportion than do adult voters in national elections.
The nominees follow:
For Student Body president: Ronald Legg, John Simpson and Phil Wright; for vice-president, Dean Stokes and Delos Summers; for secretary of records, Drusetta Martin, Ramona Schley and Marlene Stewart; for secretary of treasury, Floyd Baker and Earl Peterson; for secretary of student affairs, Kevin Stanton and Eddie Starnes; for secretary of safety and welfare, Mary Dougherty,
Decrease Shown In Unemployment
SACRAMENTO (CNS)—Report of the state department of employment for the week ending April 24 showed a decrease in the total number of unemployment insurance claims filed over the previous year.
In the Santa Ana office, 1619 claims were filed, and 1328 paid, according to the report.

Yell leader teams nominated for election included: Team 1, Gerie Glover, Earl Petersen and Eddie Starnes; Team 2, Norma Caffee Rella Cherry and Dan Salaets.
One of three song leader team will be chosen; Team 1, Hele South, Kay Forbes and Patts Hacker; Team 2, Betty Murphy, Lolly Slabaugh and Dolores Coelho; Team 3, Dolores Wallenman, Marian Caracausa, Frances Hurdado and June McClain.
CLASSECK was kicked in the mouth by a horse, forcing his teeth down his throat. The youth managed to remove them before the rancher was suffocated... The appointment of Irvin Chapman to the Bullerton City council flared into a major political uproar. Ken Harris, an opposition leader, said he has "no intention to let the issue drop." Harris intimated that he would institute a recall action against Mayor Hugh Warden, Coell Crew and Jack Dutton who approved the appointment.
DEATH—James Eugene Trainer, 18, a Laguna Beach parking lot attendant, died from injuries sustained when the car in which he was riding crashed into a tree along the Laguna Canyon rd.
COURTOPIX—Gerald Harvey Honebrake began a six-month jail term after his claim that he "blacked out" during the time he allegedly shot his friend, Richard Shaw, was supported by medical opinion... Alfred Williams and John Franklin Parker were sentenced to Chino prison terms while Leon Parks and George Mastis were turned over to the Youth Authority... Frank W. Bushard of Laguna is suing his wife, Dorothy M. Bushard, for divorce demanding a reasonable support. He claims his wife is worth $2,000,000.
SPORTOPIX — The World Champion Orange Lionnettes beat Buena Park, 1-0, before 1200 spectators Sunday... Chris DeSoto again homered as Santana beat Ralph Sulliff and Bellflower, 3-1... Four teams—Bren-Olinda, Tustin, Garden Grove and Capistrano are currently tied for the Orange county league baseball loop lead with two and one... Santana college won the Eastern conference baseball crown by beating Chaffey, 13-4... Fullerhi and Orange are currently leading the Sunset League. Joe Wallin's Anahi Colonists dumped Newport, 5-3... Ten county hi athletes qualified for the CIF. Orange's Landon Carter and Larry Kirchman, Anahi speedster, won their respective 440 heats in 49.7

James Sutherland Advanced in Rate
Fifty-one men serving aboard the submarine tender USS Sperry have been advanced in rate.
Advanced to fire control technician, second class, was James P. Sutherland, USN, of Anaheim.
Southland was graduated from the University of California, and was employed by the Fred H. Bixby Co., before entering the Navy April 23, 1951. He took his recruit training at the U.S. Naval Training Center, San Diego.

Salvation Army Pleads For Throw-Aways
The future of hundreds of needy and handicapped men may be salvaged by throw-away articles donated by Anahelm residents during the annual Salvation Army Salvage Week campaign here June 1 to 7.
During the week-long drive special fleet of Red Shield truck will be available to answer calls from local residents. Discard which they collect from homes and offices will be renewed in work shops of the Salvation Army Social Center which serves this area.
Brigadier Ranson D. Glifford manager of the center, said cast off articles donated last year provided 235,000 hours of occupation al therapy, 55,380 meals, 20,145 beds and substantial financial assistance.
He said the Salvation Army needs used clothing, shoes, furniture, bedding, dishes, electrical appliances, radios, stoves, rugs rags and miscellaneous items to continue the social rehabilitation program.
O. H. Renner, chairman of the Anaheim Salvage Week committee, urged local residents to telephone 4631 for a truck during the salvage campaign.
Bentana college won the Eastern conference baseball crown by beating Chaffey, 13-4. Fullerhi and Orange are currently leading the Sunset League. Joe Wallin's Anahi Colonists dumped Newport, 5-3. Ten county hi athletes qualified for the CIF. Orange's Landon Carter and Larry Kirchman, Anahi speedster, won their respective 440 heats in 49.7 and 50.8 seconds respectively; Fullerhi's Prosty Younger ran 14.7 in the hi sticks; Orange's Ed Denbow stepped a 4:37.7 mile; Bob Suess Huntington Beach ran second in the half mile; Steve Orton, Fullerton, qualified in the pole vault, and Santa Ana's half-mile relay team (Bob Burns, Charles Neal, Jack McCosh and Bill Swisshelm) also qualified. Fullerton college scored 120 points to win sixth straight Southern California swimming title. Gerry McNamee and Don Harper were the starts. Dick Spoulding and his assistant, Hubert Dawson, took over the Fullerton college football coaching posts, vacated by Tex Oliver.

Highway Tax Funds Disbursed To Counties
SACRAMENTO (Special)—Distribution of $56,415,883 from the Highway Users Tax Fund to cities and counties of California for the quarter ending March 31 was announced today by State Controller Thomas H. Kuchel.
Counties received $12,695,646; cities, $4,885,306, and the State Highway Fund, $38,831,951. Kuchel said.
The revenue was derived as follows for the three-month period: Net gas tax $35,174,207; diesel fuel tax, $1,968,934; transfer from motor vehicle fund, $17,095,326; transfer from motor vehicle tax fund, $2,055,579 and miscellaneous $121,837.
Of the total amount apportioned to counties, Orange county receives $234,419.43, Kuchel said, the sum to be used for construction and improvement of county roads.
Kuchel said that the $4,885,306 for cities was transferred to the State Highway Fund for future allotment as projects are approved.

School Districts Begin Repayment Of State Funds
SACRAMENTO — Repayments by school districts which borrowed funds from the $250,000,000 school bond issue will start this year, when the state withholds $1,733,188.65 from its apportionments, according to announcement made today by State Controller Thomas H. Kuchel.
Funds will be deducted from apportionments to 184 school districts, which are financially able to start making repayments, Kuchel said.
Repayment for districts in Orange county are as follows: Buena Park district, $11,591.92; Laurel district, $3650.46; and Savanna district, $1540.63.

Victim Catches Hit-Run Driver
Prompt action by L. B. "Sully" Roquet, 558 S. Ohio st., brought a hit-run driver into the Anaheim police station Saturday evening.
A car driven by Robert Gene Daugherty, 14332 Placentia-Yorba dr., Placentia, crashed into Roquet's car where it was parked in the 400 block of N. East st., at 8 p.m. Saturday, then sped off without stopping, according to police reports. Roquet gave chase and caught the other at Orange-thorpe and Placentia. He brought Daugherty into the station where he decided not to press charges. A settlement was negotiated by the two later.

Goodell Leaves FUHS for Valencia
Bud Goodell, physical education instructor at Fullerton Union High school for the past year, resigned from the staff last week, effective in September, to accept a position with the athletic department at Valencia high school. It was announced by Superintendent Stanley Wärburton recently.
Goodell, a FUHS graduate, has been Bee football and basketball coach and assistant track coach.
Two members of the local physical education staff were offered new contracts for the coming year—Bob Rohrer, assistant football coach at Fullerton junior college, and Ernie Polte, high school swimming coach.
A member of the Sanchez family had dropped a dime beneath the cushion. Searching for it with a lighted match, Sanchez ignited a blanket covering the cushion.
