Real Gold and P & L Teams Put Away Big Softball Upsets
Two surprising results were recorded in last night's Industrial League softball play, when Real Gold upset the favored Kwikset nine, 6-5, in a wire to wire thriller. The big surprise of the evening was when P & L Transmission, a team badly beaten last week by Kwikset, sprang their invisible weapon and took Chicksan in the second game at La Palma park, 5 to 0.
In the first game, it was Ralph Anderson, Real Gold catcher, who stole the lime light as he collected three for three to score twice and drive in two runs. Ralph Kisner, third sacker, also collected two singles. Ray Mallonee, first baseman, hit a homer in the second inning.
Kwikset picked its runs on Boozel's single, followed by Garcia's triple in the fifth. In the sixth, Metchum walked, Noggles singled and both scored on an error. Five straight walks produced two more runs, as Sims, right fielder, popped up to pitcher to end the inning with bases loaded.
Chiksan put men on base in all but one inning, but could not drive across a run. Left fielder Roche collected two of the three hits given up by Salazar, the P & L hurler. Chuck Sharp, Chiksan hurler, allowed only six hits but P & L bunched them for five runs.
Tonight the City League goes into action again. Los Alamitos Merchants will meet Stanton Merchants in the 7 o'clock event and Davies Bakery will defend their honor against Koopman's Furniture at the 8:30 game in the City Park.

Oh Yes—The Stars Also Will Play Ball Tonight; Los Angeles Wins, Padres Lose
The Hollywood Stars, who've been singing those box office blues since the start of the Pacific Coast league season, borrow a page tonight from the book of Bill Veeck, bossman of the St. Louis Browns.
Brother Veeek has achieved more than modest success by pulling just about every circus stunt that might possibly lure a human being to a turnstile—including midget players, fireworks, orchids and beer and breakfast in the bleachers.
Everyone who comes to the Stars' ball park gets a gift tonight. There'll be an orchid for each of the first 1000 women. The first Diego's Jack Graham slammed his fifth home run in the fifth.
Portland trounced Seattle 8-2 with a mighty six-run splurge in the eighth inning. Don Egger, whose sizzling line drive had earlier sent Seattle Manager Bill Sweeney to the hospital with an injured arm, sparked the uprising with a grand slam homer.

Everyone who comes to the Stars' ball park gets a gift tonight. There'll be an orchid for each of the first 1000 women. The first 500 men get straw hats, MacArthur corn cob pipes, cigarettes and a package of cereal. Even the kiddies get treated—to whistles balloons, and candy.
Special gifts include a TV set, gas range, washing machine, diamond ring, round trip for two to Las Vegas, Nev., a Pullman bag, an electric broiler, two 20-pound hams and 500 25-pound bags of groceries.
In addition, the Stars will play the San Francisco Seals in a baseball game.
LAST NIGHT Hollywood moved into second place, 2½ games behind San Diego, by downing the Seals 9-3. Bonus baby Patlitt ran into only occasional trouble in pitching his second win. It was the first time he's gone the route. Hollywood bombarded three Seal hurlers for 14 safeties.
Three runs in the first two innings, including a homer by Lavigne, gave Los Angeles a 3-2 win over Oakland. The Oaks made their points in the ninth on a walk, a triple by Lloyd Christopher, an error and flyout.
At San Diego the Sacramento Solons pounded two pitchers for 12 hits and a 7-2 victory. Glenn Elliott held the Padres to six hits in posting his third win. San
Angels Expecting Chuck Connors to Return to Action
As Skipper Stan Hack leads his club into Oakland for seven games this week, Angel hopes are high for a much stronger lineup than Hack has been able to field in the last three weeks.
First, it is hoped that big Chuck Connors, the slugging first baseman, who has been on the hospital roster since April 13, will be able to resume action. Connors made one pinch hitting appearance last week and aggravated the left shoulder injury but it is thought that additional treatment he received since then has been sufficient.
Left handed hitting outfielder Ron Northey, recently purchased outright from the Chicago Cubs, will join the team in Oakland.
In event Connors is playing, Max West can return to the outfield and with West, Connors and Northey, Hack can field three portside siege guns to aim for the short rightfield fence in the Oakland park.
PALO ALTO UP — Stanford University's athletic program will lose money in the 1952-1953 year, Athletic Director Al Masters figures.

Colonists Drop Heartbreaker To Fullerton Baseballers, 2-0
It was a short and bitter story for the Anaheim Colonist baseball team as they dropped their third league game of the season to the Fullerton Indians in a game at La Palma park, 2-0.
Off to a shaky start, the Colonists played good ball in every inning but the top of the first when two fielding bobbles yielded up the two runs for the invaders, enough to win the encounter. With the ball game only seconds old and two men on base Lupe Gonzales scooped up a bounding grounder and chucked to where first sacker Carl Hatfield had just been to permit the first Fullerton run-to-score. A moment later, on what should have been the out that retired the side, short stop Gayle Herbel bobbled a grounder hit at him, and the second run scored. The Fullerton runs were scored by two boys familiar to football sports fans of the area—Pennington and Hudson.
THE REMAINDER of the game went scoreless for both sides as Colonist pitcher Val Weithorn allowed only a four hit total for the game. Anaheim batters, although unable to adequately group their hitting, clouted out six hits with Gayle Herbel, regular big stickman of the club, leading with two for three trips to bat. Gonzales, Steinborn, Herrera and Ramella also each collected a hit.
Coach Clare Van Horebeke's JV squad, meanwhile, knocked off the Fullerton JV squad by a 3-0 count.
Cookmen Beat Fullerton, Set For CIF Play
Bill Cook's Anaheim high tennis squad won the right to represent the Sunset League in CIF playoff matches yesterday afternoon as they pounded Fullerton racketsmen 8-1 on the local courts.
Their first round opposition who they'll meet this coming Saturday, will not be announced until later today. The Anaheim netmen were awarded the right to represent the league in playoffs on the basis of their three wins, no loss record this season. They have yet to meet teams from Orange and Newport to clinch another league championship, however.
CIF tennis playoffs, done in similar fashion last year, are treated in this manner to enable completion of playoffs before school lets out. Last year's Cook's team won both the loop title and league representative in CIF playoffs, but bowed out in the first early CIF match with La Jolla.
YESTERDAY, perhaps fired up by the prospect of being CIF representative for the league should they win, the Colonist netmen decisively beat the Indians; the varsity dropping only the fifth singles match and the JV squad taking a clean sweep of all nine of their matches.

Al Clayes to Swim in CIF Finals Friday
By again smashing his own school record for the 50 yard free style, Al Clayes was the only member of the three-man Anaheim high swimming team to qualify in the CIF southern section swimming semi-finals held yesterday afternoon in the Long Beach Jordan pool. Finals will be held this Friday in the same pool.
Clayes, swimming against the 12 top swimmers in his event in prep Southland circles placed fifth in 25 flat, two-tenths over the old school mark. Class Cee swimmer Tony Zava, swimming in the 50 yard free style, trailed home unplaced after completely missing his turn. He was caught in 29.3 by Coach Bill Hunstock, a respectable mark in normal league competition, nevertheless.
Bobby Kinoshita, junior swimmer, moved up from Bee ranks only several weeks ago and who three times shattered his own record marks, also went unplaced in the 100 yard breast stroke. The event was won in a surprising 1.9. Kinoshita's best effort to season has been 1.15.

Announcement was made by Chairman William C. Ackerman, who said that Don Laz and the Rev. Bob Richards, both formerly of the University of Illinois; Don Cooper, formerly of Nebraska, are the sky-reaching bamboo artists who will be swinging over that 15-foot ceiling.
Richards has the best mark of the trio, 15-feet 7-inches, but Don Las is consistent over 15 feet, and Cooper, after winning the event at San Diego a week ago, then unofficially cleared 15-feet 1½ inches.
The pole vault field also includes such 14-feet-plus vaulters as Jack Rowan, formerly of U.S.C. now wearing the Los Angeles Athletic club colors, and Bobby Smith, the Marine who attended San Diego State.
Highlighting the U.S. Olympic committee's campaign to raise its 1952 budget of $850,000 will be the nation-wide observance of "Olympic Week," May 18 to 25.
