For Results and Quick Anaheim Gazette by JOHN S. NEUBAUER ... Whose digget a pit shall fall therein.—Prov. 26:27. PASTIMES—A year ago General Douglas MaeArthur was speaking his piece. He said the first blow in the next war might be a decisive one. He urged the release of U.S. military might ... Trouble broke out in the Near East where the Syrians launched a new attack on the Israeli ... Andreja Artukovich who is being sought by Yugoslavia in connection with the Hitler blood bath in which a million Jews, and Serbs were murdered lives in Surfside and is a $100-a-week bookkeeper in Ellay ... Earl Howard Roberts, 31, was sentenced to San Quentin upon conviction of a felony hit-and-run man-slaughter charge in the death of Mrs. Opal Simon of Anaheim ... Jimmy Smith's Fullerton college swimmers were far in front in the Southern California championship meet ... Bill Cook's Anahi netters defeated Santa Ana, Sunset League CIF representatives Local Clergyman On Methodist Press Staff SAN FRANCISCO — The Rev. William McKinley Walker, minister of the Wesley Methodist church, Anaheim, has been conscripted to the staff of the press relations department of the Methodist General conference here for a few days full-time service. This quadrennial body, meeting here April 23-May 7, is the supreme law and policy-making authority of the Methodist church. It has not met in the West for nearly 50 years. Official delegates from every state and 30 overseas countries are here. Mr. Walker, being a classmate at Ohio Wesleyan university of the director of public information of the Methodist church, was impressed into service when the press chief from New York found his staff inadequate to serve the 75 newsmen who have been accredited to the press room in the civic auditorium here where the sessions are being held. The Anaheim minister, who came here early in the session of the conference in charge of a group of young people from Wesley church, has served as the liaison person between the press and photographic department and the de- Classified Kates for Anaheim Gazette Anaheim Gazette Shopper and (minimum 12 words) 1 time 86c 2 times 54c 3 times 72c 4 times 90c 5 times $1.08 Card of Thanks $1.00 In Memorium $1.00 Re word 1st day — 1½ thereafter Address, phone number, etc., constitute a word. Of the 130 Anaheimers born this year, how many were born in Anaheim? You guessed it! LINE-O-TYPES — “Henhouse Jim” Patton whose claim to fame is that he was born in Anaheim, claims that Jo Ann Burdick should-a been queen of Fullerton’s Community Fair. Jo Ann, incidentally, is performing a real public service by appearing in numerous USO camp shows. That gal can twirl a baton. Hugh W. Warden, Fullerton’s mayor, has an office on Anaheim’s mainstem. Jack Dutton and Cecil Crew are also Fullerton councilmen who have vital interests in Anaheim. Johnny Vuksanovich the personable telephoneman, is a part-time farmer. He’ll tell you that it’s a gamble whether you make it or lose it. Tom Hoag is going to try to get the community unemotionally interested in subversive influences. That boy is a go-getter and deserves a pat on the back. He was way ahead of everyone else with a disaster relief plan. TODAY IN HISTORY—On May 6, 1626 Manhattan was purchased from the Indians. Property values have risen considerably in 226 years. NEWSMAKERS—Bill Montague is mighty proud of his son’s debut as an actor. Norman Montague, y’know, was co-starred in the Lincoln school’s presentation of staff inadequate to serve the 75 newsmen who have been accredited to the press room in the civic auditorium here where the sessions are being held. The Anaheim minister, who came here early in the session of the conference in charge of a group of young people from Wesley church, has served as the liaison person between the press and photographic department and the denomination’s 70 bishops. He has also been librarian handling the classification and display of the thousands of newspaper clippings pouring into the press room. Mr. Walker attended the reunion of Ohio Wesleyan alumni attended by 200 graduates of his alma mater. One of them was Associate Justice John Wesley Shenk of the Supreme Court of California who stated that he had been a page-boy at the Methodist General conference held in Omaha 60 years ago. California Rule Hinders Voting Of Employees SACRAMENTO (CNS)—While election day is always a whole holiday for state workers, employees of some private firms are hard put to get a legal two hours off to vote, in view of a ruling from the attorney general’s office that workers are entitled to take time off only if they could show they would be unable to vote unless such time were given. Lloyd A. Mashburn, state labor commissioner, brought out this point Friday in calling attention to a recent ruling of the United States Supreme court. The ruling, he said, upholds a Missouri statute somewhat similar to California’s law on the subject, granting employees two hours off in which to cast a ballot. “The California election law,” he said, “provides that every voter eligible to vote at a general direct primary or presidential primary election is entitled to two consecutive hours off from work.” TODAY IN HISTORY—On May 6, 1626 Manhattan was purchased from the Indians. Property values have risen considerably in 226 years. NEWSMAKERS—Bill Montague is mighty proud of his son's debut as an actor. Norman Montague, y'know, was co-starred in the Lincoln school's presentation of Engelbert Humperdink's production "Hansel and Gretel." Penny Dinkler turned in an excellent performance as Gretel in the folk opera directed by Wilfred Edelbrock and Cecilia Barges. Don Johnson will take an active part in Laguna Beach's little league baseball program. More than 200 boys, nine to 12, were on hand to appear before newsreel cameras. Don's illustrious father, Ernie Johnson, died last week. He was a familiar figure at La Palma park. He was always accompanied on his scouting missions by a pet cocker spaniel. Anu Story is becoming an accomplished pianist. Paul Greening commutes between his Rolling Ridge Ranch in Chino and his industrial interests in Anaheim and Norwalk. VIGNETTE—An Anaheim automobile dealer recently lost a bout with Uncle Sam. We'll tell you about it. An hombre of Latin extraction bought a used car that had been taken in on trade. The Anaheim auto dealer investigated the Latin lad's ability to pay and not his character. It seemed that federal agents intercepted the hombre as he transported weed from south of the border. They clamped onto the car. Named as parties, were the car's original owner, the Anaheim auto dealer and the hombre who was out to make a quick buck or two. The original owner was absolved because he had turned the pink slip over to the dealer, who held it until the Latin lad had paid for the car. "The dealer was left holding the sack. He didn't finance the car because he decided to handle it himself and take the interest on the balance. As it was he lost out all the way around," the original owner of the confiscated car said.
