The first was the acceptance by government defense agencies of Kwikset's powdered metal products for production of component parts needed in the defense program. The second was recognition of Kwikset's team-work efficiency, which resulted in the award of defense contracts for rush delivery of production parts vitally needed in the manufacture of war materiel for the Korean front. Despite the technical difficulties encountered in the overnight change from long-established procedures in lock manufacture, and the necessity of training people to do work to extremely close tolerances, the Kwikset team pitched in and within a matter of a few short weeks hundreds of thousands of hand grenade fuses and brass rotors were being shipped from the plant. TO ACCOMPLISH this manufacturing feat, Kwikset's Engineering and Tooling departments worked around the clock preparing the tooling for the new projects. To meet the needs of the defense projects Kwikset hired experienced executive and supervisory personnel; established production and quality control departments, and hired many new employees for the production line. To meet the needs of the defense projects Kwikset hired experienced executive and supervisory personnel; established production and quality control departments, and hired many new employees for the production line. Preparations are now under way for two new Army contracts, Mr. Schoepe said, and production is expected to start in the near future. Many of Kwikset's regular employees, veterans of the lock manufacturing operation, were transferred to the defense projects and acquired new skills. Temporary employees were added to complete the defense work, and many of these people proved their worth as members of the Kwikset team and were kept on as permanent employees after completion of the defense contracts. OTHERS, FOR whom there was no room after the defense jobs were finished, were terminated with the promise that they would be called back as soon as new work could be provided for them. Meantime, Kwikset continued its program of lock production, turning out thousands of Kwikset locksets daily. Still held back by material shortages and government quota restrictions, Kwikset nevertheless ships hundreds of cases of locksets every day to all parts of the United States and several foreign countries. "We cannot comprehend or anticipate what lies ahead," Mr. Schoepe said. "We know only that we cannot sit back and wait for new developments; we must KNOBHEAD, an editorial character developed for Kwikset Ink, made his formal debut in the November 16, 1951, edition of the magazine. Second Year For Company's 'Kwikset Ink' The progress of Kwikset Locks, Inc., has been recorded during the past year in the pages of Kwikset Ink, employee magazine published bi-weekly and distributed free to all members of the Kwikset team. In format, Kwikset Ink is a magazine averaging usually, 16 pages. MANY FACTORS were attributed to the company's acceptance by the trade. One of the main factors was the fact that the Kwikset Lock filled a need in the building industry for a precision engineered low cost lock that could be easily installed and give years of lasting and dependable service. In addition, a new sales policy was established. A policy that permitted Kwikset products to be sold only through recognized hardware jobbers and contract dealers according to legitimate trade practices at competitive prices. Kwikset does not sell direct to contractors or to retail hardware outlets. Customers of Kwikset appreciate the outstanding services offered by the company. They can be assured that the allocation and scheduling of lock shipments will be fair and equal to all customers, large or small. Shipments are often made in two days after receipt of an order. Training programs using the Kwikset movies are arranged in order to familiarize the jobber salesman with all manufacturing and installation operations. These and many other factors make it possible for Kwikset to be the outstanding residential lock value on the market today. Shop Friday Night 'Til 9 Firm Develops Employee Plans When Kwikset moved from Los Angeles to Anaheim in October, 1948, most of the employees came along. Many bought new homes in Anaheim and among the orange groves. Because there was no restaurant nearby, employees for the most part brought their own lunches. This distressed Adolf Schoepe and his staff. As workmen, they knew that hot, nourishing lunches were needed. So they bought an adjacent two-story farmhouse, moved walls, redecorated, and all-in-all spent $29,500 to transform it into a gleaming, modern cafeteria. Now the employees have the right kind of food, and at cost. No profit is expected or wanted. A profit and loss statement is published monthly. All employees receive vacations with pay plus holiday pay. Bonuses are paid under Kwikset's unique cost savings sharing plan and the profit sharing plan. Kwikset also provides medical, hospital and surgical insurance for employees and contributes to a group life insurance program. In addition, a recreation and athletic program is in effect. One employee sums up his attitude by saying: "I like to work for a fast-moving, fast-growing company. The front office knows NG—Kwikset plans soon to addition to its present 70,-ing plant. Movies at Kwikset Plant A part of Kwikset’s vast adver- tising program is the production of motion pictures on the Kwikset plant. High schools and universities have especially requested the films for its business and is always on the lookout for new ideas. Three movies have been made to date at Kwikset with plans for a fourth in the near future. One of the first films made was "Locking Up" which was the first film of its kind to show how a modern cylindrical lock is manu- factured. "Securely Yours." was the second movie which explained the many different operations in the keying and masterkeying of pin tumbler locks. And the latest addition to the Kwikset film library was "Metallurgical Magic" which shows the fascinating procedures in the production of parts of Kwikset's new Powder Metal- lurgy Division. These motion pictures make Kwikset the only lock manufacturer in the world with such an intensive program in industrial and educational films.
