FCC Radio Detective Quits; No Enough Money to Operate With SAN FRANCISCO (A) — The single official responsible for detecting spy and other illegal radio transmitters throughout northern California and Nevada quit last night. Insufficient manpower and inadequate equipment was the reason given by Frank Roach, supervisor of investigation for the Federal Communications commission (FCC). He said engineers in similar posts across the country also are snowed under. He blamed it all on "inadequate appropriations for the FCC." The result, he said, is that: 1. Lives of airline passengers are endangered. "There is always the possibility in unexplained (airplane) crashes that the cause was directly attributable to radio interference." 2. Armed Forces operations are threatened. 3. The way is open to transmit race result makers. "I know there of gamblers in the East radio transmitters in But . . . how can one them actually transmit." 4. It is difficult to cases of subversive triviality. "I just don't know said, 'whether there are using radio transmitter don't have enough men er equipment to find out An object out in inter space, away from the of the earth or anyth would have no weight still have mass. "I know there is a ring of gamblers in the East bay with radio transmitters in their cars. But . . . how can one man catch them actually transmitting?" 4. It is difficult to detect any cases of subversive transmitters. "I just don't know," Roach said, "whether there are any spies using radio transmitters . . . we don't have enough men and proper equipment to find out." An object out in interplanetary space, away from the attraction of the earth or another planet, would have no weight but would still have mass. Sandbag Disposal Stumps Army After Floods The battle to save Council Bluffs and threatened sections of Omaha across the river had involved upwards of six million sandbags. Better than half were filled. When the flood threat passed, Army engineers found themselves in a quandary; what is the most economical way to dispose of a used sandbag? While the Army was discovering that it costs more to reclaim a used sandbag than to buy a new one, some residents were solving the problem in their own way. Stockpiled bags melted away as passers-by stowed them in the trunks of their cars. Meanwhile farmers whose lands had been flooded gauged their losses in terms of the coming sea- Police Seek Modern Lady Godiva SOUTH PASADENA (P) — Police searched enthusiastically early today for a modern-day Lady Godiva, reportedly attired in nothing but a poodle haircut and astride a motorcycle. She was first reported speeding in the nude across San Pasqual bridge. Motorcycle officers from this city, Pasadena and Los Angeles joined the hunt. One officer reported sighting a motorcycle without lights in the area. But it got away. The Lady Godiva never was found. son's crops. At hard-hit Onawa, Ia., A. E.
