Anaheim high school's baseball team took off in a flying start in Sunset League competition last night by beating the defending league champions from Santa Ana 2-0 in a tight ball game at La Palma park. The two hit pitching of Colonist hurler Val Wiethorn and a flurry of hits in the first inning told the story for the Mayflowermen. Anaheim's scoring came as Lupe Gonzales walked, Pat Roberts singled, Steinborn singled to score Gonzales, Wiethorn hit into a double play that put out Roberts, and Herbel singled to score Steinborn. The Saints made their hits in the third and sixth and momentarily threatened to get back in the game in the final inning as Wiethorn let down to walk two successive men with no outs. Gayle Herbel, Anaheim short stop, retained his reputation as the big stick man of the Colonist club by batting out two for three trips to bat to share batting honors with Pat Roberts who whammed out a perfect two for two. Herbel is the club's only batter hitting in the .300s. Gonzales, Steinborn and Bishop made the other Colonist hits. Anaheim's JV squad, meanwhile, played Santa Ana JV's on Clayes field and dropped their game by the same 2-0 score. COACH JOHN Wallin's varsity-men tackle their second varsity opponent tomorrow on the La Palma field at 3 p.m., as they meet Huntington Beach, yesterday's 1-6 victory over Fullerton. Next Tuesday they finish the last of their current four homg game series with Fullerton. Tennis Team Takes Saints, Score: 6-3 Bill Cook's Anaheim high tennis team copped its first league victory last night on their own courts by dumping Santa Ana, 6-3. The combine moved front and center for Saturday's $100,000 added 1¼ mile run at Church Downs when Hill Gail smashed the track record in the Derby trial yesterday. Big Yacht Race From Newport On Tomorrow Yachting enthusiasts kept their fingers crossed at Newport Beach today, hoping the fifth annual international race to Emenada will get off tomorrow without the handicap of a possible storm. The Weather Bureau indicated the storm now out in the Pacific might stall, or miss Southern California, but held up more definite information pending developments. A fleet of about 140 yachts is scheduled to begin the 140-mile race at noon tomorrow. Included are Don Ayres' yawl Skylark, which won the major laurels last year in a trip negotiated in 22 hours, 37 minutes and 30 seconds. Regardless of the weather, the event will feature pleasant conditions at each end of the line. Tonight yachtsmen gather for the takeoff banquet at Newport, Mexican officials will stage a two-day holiday celebration. Grumpy Guy Still Fools 'em In Coast Loop Grumpy Guy Fletcher, the 42-year-old righthander who has been cut adrift by three Pacific Coast league clubs in recent years, still is one of the canniest chuckers in the loop. He whiffed 10 batters last night in hurling the league leading San Diego Padres to a 4-0 win over San Francisco. The victory made him the only twirler besides Seattle's Charley Schanz to win four games this season and hoisted his strikeout mark to 34, second only to the 36 posted by Elmer Singleton, his victim last night. A veteran of 17 years in baseball, Fletcher still has plenty of speed and can toss a wicked curve. But he uses his head as much as his right arm nowadays. Having served in the circuit since 1944—playing in previous years for Sacramento, Seattle and San Francisco—he knows batters' weaknesses about as well as anyone, as his strikeout record shows. The fidgety flinger limited the Seals to four hits and was in trouble only in the fourth. Then San Francisco with one away, loaded the bases on singles by Joe Graec and Ray Orteig and a walk. But Fletcher fanned Jim Moran and Singleton grounded out to retire the side. Murray Franklin. Clifford Mooers’ Last Greetings is expected to run in the $20,000 added Sea Breeze stakes May 17. So Regards, owned by Archie Sneed, probably will go to the post in a juvenile feature on May 31. Both are trained by Ralph West. Johnny Berardino, former infielder for the Browns, Indians and Pirates is giving up the game for a career in acting. He has enrolled in a drama school. SACRAMENTO has Hollywood catcher Mike Sandlock to thank for its 8-5 win. One of the circuit’s finest backstops, he tossed a wild one while trying for a double play at first base, allowing the Solons to score three runs in the eighth inning. With the bases loaded, John Ostrowski rapped to Lou Stringer at third, forcing a runner at the plate. But Sandlock’s throw hit Ostrowski in the back and he was safe. Al White and Eddie Bockman followed with singles for a three-run inning. At Oakland, righthander Al Gettel survived a wild, bases loaded none-out ninth inning to beat the Portland Beavers 5-2. The Beavers scored twice on a balk and a ground-out before Gettel worked himself out of the jam. Seattle spoiled Los Angeles’ homecoming when Clarence Maddern’s long fly in the tenth scored Pete Pavlick, ending the overtimer 2-1. Walt Judnich tallied from third for Seattle’s first run on a long fly by Bob Wilson. The Angels only run was unearned. The win came from the wildness of Rudy Lopez, the second of three pitchers used by Franklin. Clinton Stark started the game, and when he left, his team was out in front, 5-3. But Washington capitalized on the wildness of Lopez to score one run in the third inning, and then sew up the game in the fourth inning by scoring seven big tallies. In that big fourth inning Penido got life on an error by the catcher, Hurtado walked, Fisher walked, Tremble walked, and then with the bases loaded, Fred Arciniaga, the Washington catcher, drilled a single through the infield to score two tallies. Jack Farless was then safe on a fielder's choice, and Tony Mouguillo walked. It was then that the Franklin coach brought in John Baker, the first sacker, and he put out the fire for the Franklin team. But the damage had already been done. Baker struck out Bob Hatfield, got Danny Leos on a pop fly to infield, and then struck out Jose Penido for the third out of the inning. KENTUCKY FIXERS' FREE ON PROBATION NEW YORK (P)—Three former University of Kentucky basketball stars accused of fixing games were free on probation today, but Coach Adolph Rupp—the famed star of the bluegrass—was hit with the full impact of the college court scandal. General Sessions Judge Saul S. Streit castigated Rupp and university of Kentucky officials as having to share the "responsibility for corrupting and demoralizing" the three ex-players. On the recommendation of the district attorney, Streit suspended sentences for Alex Groza, Ralph Beard and Dale Barnstabie but placed them on indefinite probation. WASHINGTON (P)—The Federal Communication commission (FCC) may spell out before year's end just how far it believes radio and television stations can go in giving out race track information. Until recently the FCC, mindful of the Constitutional ban on censorship as such, has left it to the discretion of individual stations. Now it has scheduled hearing which all involved hope will produce a general policy.
