For Results and Quick Anaheim Gazetteer by JOHN S. NEUBAUER Whosoever shall smile thee on thy right check, turn to him the other also.—Matt. 5:30. NOSTALGIC—A year ago Dean Acheson said something about the third World War being at hand. That was when Harry $ Truman asked Congress for $40 billion to fight communism... that was the day that Jupiter Pluvious dumped another 50 inches of moisture on Anaheim and its environs. Wade Showalter, 35-year-old bargemaster, was drowned when the 150-foot craft he was tending capsized. Sen. Clyde Watson reported that he is against the one cent sales tax hike proposal. Lewis Compton, a 26-year-old Anaheimmer, was arrested by the Hiway Patrol for erratic driving. Patrick Ryan, Roy Moss and Paul Jurado celebrated new arrivals in their house holds. Death claimed Willis Whisler, 52, and Mrs. Estelle Robinson, 72, long time Anaheimers. That's what happened a year ago. Remember? County Employees Disclose Cost of County Govt. Pertinent facts about county government include the size and sources of its income; the Orange County Employees association emphasized today, while preparing for the "Know Your County Government" demonstration scheduled May 17. That will be demonstration day, when the employees association presents exhibits and demonstrations of government functions and activities at the courthouse. The employees will donate their Saturday holiday to the event, intended for public education. The fact that nearly $45,000,000 came out of the public's pocket during the last fiscal year, to oil the machinery of county government and its various special districts, including schools, lends interest to the D-Day project, the employees stressed. Including some $5,710,294.30 raised for schools, in addition to school taxes, the people during the fiscal year paid into the public treasury $44,917,492.83, according to the county's statistict report. Direct tax levies produced nearly half of it, or $20,770,409.63. Of that sum, the tax collector garnered $18,845,770.96 in taxes and $16,-038 in tax auction sales. The coun- NO CHANGE—The Gazetteer's post card political poll of Anaheimers is unchanged. Anaheimers like like. Anaheim Democrats like Estes bestest. TRIBUTE—Almost a year after death stilled the voice of Lotus Loudon. Anaheim publisher and GOP leader, Walter Kee Maxwell died in the 74th year of his life. At the time of his death Maxwell shared the same office with Floyd McCracken, former Anaheim editor. Both wrote editorials for James Copley's San Diego papers. Although Maxwell published the Fullerton News-Tribune for a 10 year period—from 1929 to 1939—he was an influence in Orange county newspaper publishing circles. W. Kee brought a national reputation with him when he came to Fullerton. He was a nationally recognized editorial writer, a short story writer and a humorist. He fought for the right. Maxwell was a newspaperman of the old school. He made his typewriter hum as he hammered away at the keyboard with two fingers. Usually he chewed on a cigar as he wrote. His passing is a blow to Orange county and to the readers of the San Diego Union who'll miss his editorials and his deeply religious columns. BIG THREE—Only one of the county's "big three" of the fourth estate remain. R. C. Holles, the Santa Ana publisher, whose caustic editorials have won for him and his Freedom Newspapers a national "reputation." EDUCATION—Working for Oremployees stressed. Including some $5,710,294.30 raised for schools, in addition to school taxes, the people during the fiscal year paid into the public treasury $44,917,492.83, according to the county's statisticti report. Direct tax levies produced nearly half of it, or $20,770,409.63. Of that sum, the tax collector gathered $18,845,770.96 in taxes and $16,-038 in tax auction sales. The county assessor collected $1,541,198.85 in taxes on unsecured personal property. The county auditor's delinquent tax redemption collections totaled $367,401.82. Subventions and grants of state and federal aid to the county in various fields: welfare, health, law enforcement, schools, highways, veterans services, and apportionment of taxes collected by the state for the counties, amounted to another $12,079,032.30. LICENSES AND PERMITS issued by various departments for all sorts of activities yielded a total of $44,809.87. Fees and commissions amounted to $349,834.24. Largest item there was the recorder's fees, $152,-878.29. Building inspector's fees, $85,338.24, represented the next largest item. The county collected $78,838.85 from franchise taxes and earnings. Fines collected by courts and penalties collected by libraries added $89,440.27. Leases and rentals of county property brought in $8034; rpyalties netted $3127.84. The county furnished a wide variety of services through a number of agencies, for which it received compensation and reimbursement totaling nearly a million dollars, the exact figure being $984,266.48. The schools again figured heavily in this department, to the tune of $711,117.39, including $646,634.14 for tuition. Sale of property produced $10,.353.62. This includes a $7424.25 orange crop from the county farm. Interest collected by the county treasurer on public funds deposited in banks, and on county-owned bonds, amounte to $59,744.96. Miscellaneous receipts an refund aggregated $817,301.05. for all occasions Carmen's FLOWER SHOP 111 East Center Ph. 4997 Funeral Directors HILGENFELD MORTUARY Faithful Contents Service 20 E Broadway Anaheim PHONE 4105 BACKS CAMPBELL KAULBARS Mortuary Phone 3209 251 N. R. C. Holles, the Santa Ana publisher, whose caustic editorials have won for him and his Freedom Newspapers a national "reputation." EDUCATION—Working for Orange county's "big three" was an education. W. Kee Maxwell used to take us aside and explain the finer points of newspapering. And from R. C. Hoiles we learned the meaning of tenacity. Knowledge is priceless. The newspaper game has many facets. It is a complex, competitive undertaking. You may not have known these men personally, but chances are if you've lived in Orange county for any length of time, you've come under their influence. NITECAPSULE—Newspapers are the mirrors of time. Dr. Dorothy Jordt To Attend Conclave Dr. Dorothy K.
