IT APPEARS THAT THE WEDDING WILL BE SLIGHTLY DELAYED Bette Davis Latest Film Stars To Appear on TV with Durante BY BOB THOMAS HOLLYWOOD MD—Bette Davis is the latest great lady to fall for the television charms of the noted lover, James Durante. The Schroer has entertained such potent figures as Ethyl Barrymore, Margaret Truman, Diane Tucker, Gloria Swanson and Helen Traubel on this TV show, most of them making their TV debuts with him. This called for some investigation. "What is this strange power you have over these women?" I asked him. "It is my own natural ability, coupled with a rare adrenaline and known' what to do at the right time," answered Durante, blushing modestly. Miss Davis more or less confirmed this statement when I asked her why she was making the plunge into TV. Tomorrow night's show will be her first appearance on the new medium. "They asked me to do the show and I wanted to do it," she replied in her famed brittle manner. "It's as simple as that. Besides, I love working with Jimmy He's marvelous." When I visited the rehearsal, everyone was amazed at how Miss Davis showed up early and co-operated with any directions. I guess they were expecting her to toss a tizzy on the hour every hour. She even had all her lines memorized. "It's not easy for me," she confessed. "It has been 20 years since I learned a part for the stage. In pictures, we only have to learn a few pages every day television is going to picture actors." Does she have any for TV? "No, I think most on film eventually only way you can see but I don't think she's should be anyt They lose their sp film." MISS DAVIS said seen much TV. U she and husband lived at Mallibq, where tion was almost nil into town, she has set and reported that shows are good and bad." Durante himself has praise for the actress called "Bett." "Bett and I did a gether once—'The Ma to Dinner,'" he comm great. We wanted to chance to do a little d show, but she didn't want to play it stricth She's doin' a song me, too." He added that all ladies have been cooperated the reason is his irresistable charm joye telling aboutences with the co-sta SQUAD COMING OUT TO INVESTIGATE! I'll speak YOUR CAPTAIN FOR THE RADIO ONE THANK YOU, SIR DARE'S ONY? THANK GOD, CAPTAIN RICKEY... WHAT... WE WANTS TO STAY WITH YOU? I'm AFRAID I COULDN'T PERMIT THAT HEY FELLOWS! LET'S MAKE ANTHONY THE CAPTAIN OF OUR TEAM! DIANA'S BEEN READY FOR MORE THAN AN HOUR! When I visited the rehearsal, everyone was amazed at how Miss Davis showed up early and co-operated with any directions. I guess they were expecting her to toss a tizzy on the hour every hour. She even had all her lines memorized. "It's not easy for me," she confessed. "It has been 20 years since I learned a part for the stage. That's why television is going to be tough to picture actors." Dogs she have any future plans for TV? "Mine whatsoever. I'll just wait and see what happens. I'm in no hurry." Would she do a live show? "No, I think most of TV will be on film eventually. That's the only way you can insure quality. But I can't think shows like Jimmy's should be anything but live. They lose their spontaneity on film." MISS DAVIS said she has not seen much TV. Until recently, she and husband Gary Merrill lived at Malibu, where TV reception was almost nil. Since moving into town, she has acquired a set and reported that "some of the shows are good and some are very bad." Durante himself had nothing but praise for the actress, whom he called "Bett." "Bett and I did a pitchuh together once—'The Man Who Came to Dinner,'" he commented. "She's great. We wanted to give her a chance to do a little drama on this show, but she didn't want to. She wants to play it strictly for laughs. She's doin' a song numbuh with me, too." He added that all his leading ladies have been cooperative and hinted the reason is because of his irresistable charm. He enjoys telling about his experiences with the co-stars.
