Cypress Nine Beats Anaheim Team, 3 to 1
In a practice tilt played at La Palma park last night, the Cypress Morelients added the Anaheim Merchants, 2-1. Both teams played ball all through they were in the middle of the season. It was a beautiful pitchers battle up until the seventh inning. In the top of the seventh, the Cypress batters got to Johnny Vuksanovich for three runs, and this was just too many to overcome, although Anaheim scored one run in the bottom of the seventh.
Cypress scored its runs on a triple in John Sousa, a single by Dick Arbias, a hit batsman, and a home run by Red Hamilton. This booming home run kept the 3:30 life time batting average of Red's.
Anaheim's lone run came in the bottom of the seventh inning, on a lead off single by Bob Mucken-thauler, a stolen base, a single by Roger Pannier, which sent Muckenthauler to third, from where he scored on a passed ball.

Pacific Coast League leaders the glove with the climbing Hollywood Stars who are riding a five-game win streak. (The game is vised in the Anaheim area.) Meanwhile the Los Angeles Angels—only half a game off pace—seek to extend their winning ways at Portland.
In other games, Sacramene plays at San Francisco and Seattle hosts Oakland. All were last night.
Both O'Doul and Manager Fred Haney of Hollywood have named undefeated flingers to work night. Red Embree starts for visiting Padres and Harry Falk for Hollywood. Each has won two and Fisher sports the kicker earned run average of 1.38.
Fans who wonder what has kept the unhailed Padres atop the heap may get their answer the week, or they may see a new leader. Hollywood, with help from Pittsburgh Pirates, climbed from sixth place to third with straight wins over Joe Gordon. Sacramento club. That put three and one-half back of San Diego and three behind Los Angeles. Oakland rounds out for first division, five games off the early pace.
SEVERAL NEWCOMERS are aiding the San Diego cause, but some of the well known Pacific Coast League performers are starting out stronger than usual. Top new talent on the club appears to be John Davis, a big outfielder who leads the league in RBIs with 19, Lonnie Sommers catcher, batting .375; and Allen Richter, a sharp-fielding shortstop.
Los Angeles finished with three straight wins last week after dropping five of six to lose first place. The usually heavy hitting Angels seem to have regained their batting eye and Max West shares the home run lead—at four—with Lou Stringer of Hollywood.
Joe Gordon hopes to shake mis-Sacramento team back to the form...

ON THE LAM... with Jim Lamhofer
THOUGHTS FROM OVER the week-end... We wonder if the Cleveland Browns' acquisition of George Rattorman from Dallas indicates any weakening in Paul Brown's expressed conviction that Loyola's Don Klosterman will some day step into the shoes of Otto the Great Graham... Klosterman is already inked to a Brown contract for next fall... It seems UCLA's baseballers must have established some sort of record when they left 20 base runners stranded in a nine-inning game against SC last Saturday... Surprisingly, the Bruins won, too, 4-3, pushing over the winning tally in the ninth... Sunset League track fans are holding their collective breaths in eager anticipation of the long-awaited "race of the year" between Larry Kirchman of Anaheim and Orange's Landon Carter in the 440 at the league finals this coming Friday... The result may forecast the winner at the quarter-mile distance in the CIF and state meets later on, for Kirchman and Carter are rated the top 440 prop duo in the state... The possibility of Hollywood getting Gus Bell from Pittsburgh certainly comes as a surprise... Bell hit a respectable .278 last year and the youthful outfielder was rated as one of the top prospects for stardom in the big time

Fishing News
John O'Kane, of the local Dikes brings to our attention a bulletin of the State Department of Fish and Game which points out how sportsmen can get the latest fishing information for week-end outings.
Because they can handle requests quickly by telephone, the agency asks that fishermen not write but phone for information. (In this area phone the State Division of Forestry, P. O. Box 86, 1212-E Chapman Ave., Orange.)
The telephone number to call is Orange 515.
The division can give current information on waters recently planted with trout and recommended for fishing pleasure in the southern nine counties of the state.
On hand at the division will be a list of streams and lakes suggested for trout fishing pleasure in Southern California, including those tough to find.
Although it has a list of all these waters in the Southland, here is the list for Orange county:
Holy Jim creek—tributary to Trabago creek. Reached via Trabago Canyon road.
San Juan creek—from San Juan Guard station unrestricted in lower San Juan public campground.
San Diego creek (limited) reached via Modjeska and hiking in on trail from Trabuen Oaks or Santiago Forest road.
Silverado creek—southwest of Santa Ana, beyond Santiago Reservoir.
Trabajo creek—east of Orange.
So all you fishermen take care!
cast the winner at the quarter-mile distance in the CIF and state meets later on, for Kirchman and Carter are rated the top 440 prep duo in the state... The possibility of Hollywood getting Gus Bell from Pittsburgh certainly comes as a surprise... Bell hit a respectable 278 last year and the youthful outfielder was rated as one of the top prospects for stardom in the big time... But he has looked very bad in spring games and in the first league tilts this year... It will probably take Boston fans a long while this season to get accustomed to all the new and unfamiliar names on the Brave and Red Sox rosters... No longer do such recognized tags as Sain, Elliott, Doerr, or Stobbs grace the Bean-town manifests, and the name of Mrs. Archio once caught a 34-pound trout in Pyramid Lake near Reno before its waters were exhausted of the big fish several years ago. — (Associated Press photo).
Williams will soon be gone... In their places are such unknowns as Lepcio, Matthews, Conley, Beed, Piersall, Thorenberry, Wood, Hatfield, Cusick, Klaus, Whisenant, and Thiel... It's a year of vast rebuilding for both clubs, and the respective results should be very interesting... Look for the Yankees to pick up a head of steam soon... Their slow start doesn't surprise us, since they are notoriously laggard getting underway every spring... Look for them to hit their winning stride within two or three weeks... Bob Stevens of the San Francisco Chronicle, whom we respect as the most astute baseball man among the Pacific Coast scribes, has picked the Yankees and Giants to repeat, so we figure we are in pretty good company.

The Mercury Monterey took the sweepstakes prize with a figure of 25.40 miles per gallon. Running under identical competitive conditions, the 26 strictly stock American cars averaged 22.0 miles per gallon.
WINNERS...were picked in 11 classes, each car being judged on its performance, pound for pound, compared to others within that price class. Winners were selected on a handicap basis so that every competitor had equal chance. Handicapping was on a "ton-mile" basis; car weight is multiplied by the number of miles, and then divided by the gallons of Mobilgas used, to get the "ton-miles per gallon" figure. The sweepstakes winner is that car which delivered the highest "ton-miles per gallon" of all participants in all classes.
IT WAS OFFICIAL—was sanctioned and supervised by the Contest Board, American Automobile Association.
GASOLINES WERE STRICTLY STOCK—Drivers used Mobilgas or Mobilgas Special (premium), whichever they preferred. Regular Mobiloll protected the engine, and all running gear was lubricated with Mobilgreases.
TO GET ALL THE MILEAGE YOUR CAR CAN DELIVER—Economy Run drivers urge those three rules: drive safely, keep your car in good mechanical condition, and use Mobilgas.
